IRELAND: NEW LAW PROPOSED TO ROUND UP HORSES THAT ROAM FREELY

Horses and ponies allowed to roam freely around urban housing projects in Ireland could be rounded up and culled under a proposed new law.
Most are the pets of local children, but government ministers and animal rights activists say the horses are being mistreated and are a danger to their young owners.

The decaying tower blocks and tattered landscape is the last place one would expect to find horses roaming free.
But in Dublin things are a little different.
Keeping horses is a growing craze among children living in some of the toughest neighbourhoods of the city.
But the Agricultural Department says the animals have become a threat to children's safety and it wants to clamp down on urban horse owners.
The proposed legislation, which has all-party support, will allow local authorities to seize any horse that it considers out of control.
There are around 3-thousand horses on housing projects all over Ireland and a third of these are in Dublin.
On the Ballymun Estate children keep their horses in makeshift stables on the edge of the estate.
The horses are left to roam green spaces and waste ground around the estate.
The young riders say horses keep them out of trouble.

Most people around here haven't got horses. And you can flash it off to them when you want to and gallop them. They know that you're taking care of them. You can wash them down in front of all the people down the stables. And you can go on telly and all, go to meetings and all about the horse. It's good.

But animal welfare campaigners claim many horses are neglected on the estates.

Well, our objection to the horses in Dublin is the fact that the sufferings they endure, you know, to be children's playthings, or as they seem to be treated as playthings to a large extent. Up to today, 80 horses have died since the beginning of the year, most of them put down by our own society or by veterinary surgeons on behalf of the society. And though everyone in Dublin claims to love horses there was no sign of these 80 owners when their horses where at the point of death or had starved dreadfully or had suffered terrible injury

Community leaders argue horses give children a healthy interest.

There's a sense of ownership and power, respectability attached to all of this. And this is something, I think, as I was saying at the beginning, that we all need in our lives. Kids find it by having horses. Adults find it by getting into positions. But kids find it, get it by having horses and I think that's really important.

The children of Ballymun have vowed to fight the bill every step of the way.
But they will have to wait until the autumn when the bill reaches a further reading to know whether their trusty steads will remain a part of the Dublin landscape.

People talk a lot of shit about ballymun without realising the people who lived and grew up there are fully fledged human beings capable of having hearts and creating memories.
I think the Irish government should work to help these kids keep their horses in better condition...they build the flats they live in so build a few stables and a fence around the green field sites and maybe have a class or two. In the end it benefits the horses AND the kids and in turn the city as a whole.

I'm Irish and I hope to god someone gives all these horses a good home. there riding yearlings and underfed foals. its obnoxious and cruel.

What about race horses there galloped at full speed around a race track an whipped to try make them go faster an made jump fences too ,when these horse's fall an break legs there not nursed back to health no ,there shop in the head because they can't make the owners money no more an they wouldn't spend money on food for a horse that's not making them money , about 10years ago I bought 2 X race horses for 20euro each they were in a field with other horses it was winter with no grass or water ,an mounds of stuff dumped wood with nails sticking out all sorts of dangers to the horses ,these people that reared them for raceing didn't want them anymore nothing to be made from them wouldn't find good homes for them so just gave them away to get rid of them ,these horse's were chiped so the vet scanned them and we found there history ,thay weren't winners so dispose of them the cheepist way ,no I know a whole lot more of these horses were sold cheep for slaughter , now tell the country about these owners an there crulty ,but you won't,all your good for is picking on those less well off ,an take the little enjoyment and there pet away ,now piss off and expose your own, or maybe we will do for you.

The horses should be in a sanctuary or a wildlife reserve where people either take care of them or leave them alone. Kids should be supervised by adults.
I looked up into the west movie clip this came up the movie about 2 Irish kids find a house that comes out the sea they run way with it after the police try to take it . Crazy to see it’s based of truth
Ballymun is been knocked down now anyway so I guess there ain’t no more horses for the kids anymore.

Disgusting and so very sad to watch this; to let children race these poor pony's -horses and with there Poor Foals at foot when they should be resting not galloping up and down, time these Horses and Pony's were taken from them, and taken to a rescue where these children can be supervised and shown how to look after them properly; brushing feeding mucking out ect not just galloping about pulling on there mouths , children that age have not got a clue what pain they are causing to these animals.

these horses are taken care of and as she said most horses put down by the society so basically most horse deaths are because of them so they arent giving thereselfves a good reputation
