This tragic flight was shot down by the US Navy.

For context, Iran Air Flight 655 was a regularly scheduled flight from Iran to the UAE. The USS Vincennes was trying to fend off some gunboats which were trying to harass a fisherman. Flight 655 came in to their radar and the captain of the Vincennes, William Rogers didn't trust it. They later stated that they misidentified the A300 for an enemy F-14 Tomcat and later paid 61 million dollars in compensation. Iran states that the plane was giving off IFF Squawks in Mode 3, which would identify it as a civilian aircraft, not military. Due to this negligence, 290 people lost their lives. (That also includes 16 crew, 66 children). (Edit: I didn't copy paste from Wikipedia)
