The dbal-d2 has an illuminator that is competing with the full power units. Then you don't have to rely on a separate light for ir. As for long range to short range for the illuminator, there is a replacement diffuser cover for the d2 illuminator so you can go from 800+yard illumination to short range wide spill with a quick flip. This is just another option among many.

Just sold me on the arisaka. I was looking at a Modlite IR 850 to replace my Surefire M952V but I really only need 300 yards max and don’t want to autogate my tube too much. Going to pair it with my Perst 4

Great video, used the SF Vampire in Afghanistan, it worked okay, but had some problems. It broke after about 3 months and 4 or 5 hard drops. Thinking about trying out the modlight with a Steiner OTAL.

Check out the Holosun 117IR too, half the price for the same 0.7mw laser, just no offset but that might be better depending on setup

Outstanding video - I bought the 850 unfortunately :/ hopefully when I get it I wont have to many problems with flooding.

Really good video, I want a maul but I also want a second pair of nvgs. The arisaka seems like a good idea thanks.

I know this video is older, but curious if you have any experience with the Kiji? I'm going back and forth between the Arisaka IR250 vs shelling out for the Kiji 3⁰. Im wondering if the juice is worth the extra squeeze for the Kiji. I'm thinking the Arisaka will serve my needs fine, but still curious

Great video, thanks for that. Arisakas website makes it sound like there’s also a 700mW EX IR head, any chance we’ll get to see a comparison of the 250mW head to 700mW? I feel like that would get you performance more akin to the long range MAWL setting

How much does the DBAL I2 + SureFire + IR illumination weigh in comparison to the MAWL + Vis Light?

I know this is an old video but how was the weight on that setup with the Steiner I2, IR flashlight, and white light, when compared against a Mawl+white light setup?

Do you know how the weltool lh2 IR head compares to the arisaka or modlite heads?

First thanks so much for making this much needed info. 1. What mounts are you using for the lights on the M-LOK rail I can see ones a Ariska in-line what’s the other one? 2. Have any experience with the Ariska 940nm head? wondering how it compares to the Ariska head 3. Hoping unity comes out with the dual Lead hot button soon as it would be a cheaper and smaller footprint way to do this plus constant on option. 4. Why not use an otal instead of the 9007?

Going down the line: 1. It’s an inline Arisaka MLOK mount and an offset MLOK Arisaka mount. Another inline mount would work at the 3 o’clock position, but I had a few extra offset mounts so that’s what I used. 2. No experience with the 940nm Modlite (assuming that’s what you meant), but from all the reports I’ve seen, it’s performance is similar to the SF Vampire with less naked eye signature. 3. Agreed, although you lose the option for activation of only the LAM without using the onboard fire button. 4. Even though the DBALs illuminator is very anemic, it still works well at close range (especially with a diffuser filter). Think of it as akin to the MAWL close range mode.

@@7gerez Yes, all of them have a red glow visible to the naked eye. From that aspect, they obviously are not comparable to the MAWL.

Somewhat unrelated question, but hopefully you can give some information: It looks like you're running a Geissele 1.93 height LPVO mount with a Reptilia ROF-90 RMR mount, correct? If so, do you find hold overs to be too much with the RMR on top of the 1.93 mount? I've been thinking of going this route on a 12.5" "do-all" build for both day and night usage, and I've been planning on running that exact setup with a Razor HD 1-6, but not many out there are running 12 o'clock piggyback RDS on 1.93 tall mounts. How has it worked for you, and would you consider a short video over that setup? I appreciate it!

Yes, that setup was a 1.93” with an ROF-90 RMR mount. Overall it’s just not that big of a difference. Standard AR mounts are typically 1.5x” so you’re talking roughly .4” taller for the RMR on a 1.93” mount. You’re going to have an offset/holdover at close range no matter what, so there isn’t much to adjust to (and you’re not using the RMR for distance shots, so it doesn’t matter much there either). I no longer have the 1.93” mount as it didn’t work well behind my PVS-30, though, so can’t really do a video.

To some extent, yes. The EX IR heads are clearly designed for ranged illumination. I know some have made diffuser caps with a properly fitting scope cap, which should help quite a bit at close range.

With the correct SF tailcap, yes. I am utilize a TAPS Sync in the video.

The MAWL is the King for sure but a OD Green MAWL is the Unicorn!! Is that OD or is it FDE and lighting is shinning OD ?
