BE Meyers KIJI vs Surefire Vampire vs Full Power Illuminator Performance Comparison

Спорт

A performance comparison with the new BE Meyers KIJI K1-3, an IR illuminator that uses the same VCSEL technology as the MAWL. The more focused 3 degree version of the KIJI is shown, but you can also get a 10 degree version. The KIJI is way more powerful than a typical civilian laser based IR illuminator, but still doesn't quite replace a full power laser module.
Also tested are the Surefire KM2-C vampire light head, the Steiner DBAL I2 9007 (civilian power), and the AN/PEQ-15 (full power).

@@Hoplopfheil It was a real PEQ, obtained through an official channel, and brand new from like 2019 I think. The petri dish isn't what I was referring to though (that doesn't really bother me). It's the amount of contrast with the illuminator on high. You don't see that much contrast in real life through a tube. That's where the Kiji, MAWL, NGAL, etc. really are a major game changing improvement is they don't overwhelm the image to the point where there's not enough contrast to see what's going on. If the PEQ and MAWL illuminators were that close in real life I think virtually everyone would just pay the 1100 for a PEQ instead of 4k for the MAWL. I also know the NGAL has the same gen illuminator as the MAWL. If they weren't infinitely better than PEQs then there's no way people would pay 7k for an NGAL vs. 2k for a full power PEQ.

@@N-A762 I've had a MAWL for about a year now. It's not the newest version that just came out, but is the version just before that. I've not had battery drain issues at all, and it has been 100% reliable, even in cold weather. I find the illuminator much more usable than my FP PEQ due to how clean the illuminator is. The PEQ, though powerful, is less useful to my eyes. Pretty much all PEQ15's (full power or civi) will have artifacts and/or shadowing in the illuminator. Some are better than others of course, but in my experience it's rare to find a PEQ with a clean illuminator. These imperfections definitely have an effect on positive identification, especially at longer distances. This won't be much of an issue on a square range with pre staged targets, but when you are looking for people or animals against a tree line, in heavy brush, or inside a structure from the outside looking in through a window/doorway, the PEQ artifacts and shadowing can certainly play tricks with your eyes. With the MAWL it's a smooth, even spill. I still like my PEQ for the weight savings and simplicity, but the both have their place. The MAWL is heavy and you definitely won't forget it's on the gun.

The DBAL uses edge emitting laser diodes, while the Kiji and Mawl use VCSEL based laser diodes. My understanding of it is that the edge emitting diodes only uses one laser diode that is limited to civ levels, while VCSEL use many small diodes that are each civilian power, and combined they create a much more powerful beam while still technically remaining civilian legal. Not sure how correct that is though, so take that for what it is
