iPhone Gaming is Getting A Lot Better

Let's review a new iPhone controller called the SCUF Nomad, and take a look at iPhone gaming at large. In summary: things have never been better than they are right now, but the experience is not quite perfect.

Hey, good news: SCUF confirmed with me today that they *are* working on Android support for their Nomad controller, they want to make sure that it will work consistently across the various Android devices on the market before adding official support. I'll be sure to update once it goes live, but it does sound like it'll take some time (think months, not weeks).

@@cabrinius7596 I saw that, but that design is not very good. I gave him some really good suggestions to improve the concept.... he just deleted my comments. So yah. I'll tell you, the best implementation at the moment is mine. I use the highest Pixel phone (root, custom rom) and have a 3D Printed case which docks the Razer JungleCat controllers. The controllers detach, and together they snap together very snugly into one pocket. The phone goes into another pocket. Setup takes seconds, comfort is better than all other options, since it makes 3D gaming in third person and first person much easier. So basically you can emulate upto x4 Resolution Wii, and anything lower even better. That's basically the cutoff point. There is a PS Vita emulator in works, and NSwitch is an option for low-end titles. But I would focus those and other systems like Windows XP, 360, PS3, WiiU, PS4, and Windows 7 games for a higher system. And for current games (Windows 10) I would prefer that on a desktop Gaming PC instead.

For non-Bluetooth devices, you can hook up a power bank to the phone through the pass-through port and get no real battery drain while gaming. @@TheNameIsSR Well, from personal experience with pass-through charging, it's not really an issue unless the game involves using the touchscreen, since the heat doesn't really get transferred to the controller. My Nomad is supposed to come in the mail today! I’m super excited because although I played a lot of video games in past years, I’ve found that recently I don’t have the time or the will to sit down and commit to the time it takes to enjoy games on a console. I think getting back into mobile gaming is what I need to satisfy that craving for a console-like experience on the go. What will really sell it for me is if Fortnite ever comes back to iOS here in the US… yeah yeah I know everyone thinks Fortnite is for 12-year-olds, but I think it’s fun! In the meantime, I look forward to fine tuning my COD Mobile skills, emulating DS titles with Delta, and trying out a couple of other games that should be enhanced with the Scuf Nomad!

Kinda odd that it is Apple only considering it is Bluetooth. The Backbone at least makes sense since it physically connects via the usb c/lightning port. Although I am not sure how it works now with the new iphones having usb c. My big gripe with phone gaming is that there are no phones with the 16:9 ratio. Even thought they advertise large 6"+ screens they are all tall and skinny which is fine for scrolling and hand feel but really takes away from media consumption. Would like an older style phablet phone with a big 16:9 screen with new hardware.

The RE games on the app store also have sales and have the exact same prices as Steam when they’re on sale, so you just missed that. Did you compare it to the Consoles while the steam sales were going on too? Because sales period are not always aligned.

The fact that it doesn’t have a USB-C interface going right through the port is a big turn-off for me because latency is a critical thing in gaming, especially in smartphones where cloud gaming is maybe at high frame but sky-high latency or local native AAA gaming is at a low frame rate so the latency is also higher

I have this controller and it’s missing the ability to play with touch games like Wuthering waves and Tarisland. They don’t even let you choose a game to add to the app. So it just sits on my desk until they change that. For now I just use my g8.

Will never touch an apple device, but I appreciate handheld gaming and this kind of innovation is pretty neat. When I think of "mobile" gaming, typically I am thinking of just using a raw phone, which would be an abysmal experience for any game I would take the time to play. Things like this could change that opinion. Not likely to replace dedicated handhelds for a long time though.

Might be a good option for vertical shmups or DS gaming on an ipad mini perhaps? Not having the usb-c sticking out I assume you can make this whatever orientation you want, though sadly as is common the sides don't clamp close enough for vertical gaming with a phone. Edit: Ah nevermind, the tab that cradles the device at the bottom I think an ipad would just flop out! Oh well.

if I can't charge the phone while im using the controller it means every session is gonna be of like 2 - 3 hours of play and while it sounds ok you also have to wait like 1 hour to really charge your phone after is just not convenient. other than that this sounds like the new number 1 portable controller right now for things like steam link and remote play

Honestly, having to remove the case every time I want to use my backbone controller, makes me never want to use it. So having a case friendly controller is a definite plus for me. That design though probably lead to the decision to go Bluetooth only, that and if they went USB-C, only people with the newest iPhone would be able to use this without coming up with some clumsy adapters.

My problem with the backbone and the keshi v2 is the clicky buttons. Like this is meant as something for on the go gaming, so do you really want to be the awkward guy clicking away in the back seat or corner? i want to game without drawing attention to the fact i am.
