iPhone 7 Review: Beyond The Boring

For another year running, the new iPhone is a lot like the old iPhone. In looks, in functionality, in its very essence, the iPhone 7 is a device of old ideas, repackaged: the water resistance, the little conveniences, even the assassination of the noble headphone jack ... none of it is truly new to the smartphone world. But Apple (as always) is less about novelty than about presenting existing technology in a new and interesting way. The iPhone 7 lives up to that legacy -- but you need to be able to see beyond the boring bits to realize it. Join Michael Fisher for MrMobile's iPhone 7 review, and stay tuned for the iPhone 7 Plus review coming soon!

    I am an Android type of guy. But I was curious why do people buy iPhones in such high demand... So I bought the iPhone 7. The hardware is ok. Nothing impressive. But the software though, it's leaps and bounds BEHIND Android. What I do enjoy on the iPhone though, is it's perfectly smooth UI. And speed? maybe. I don't know about it, since I don't play games on my phone.

  • @ThomasAlex

    @ThomasAlex

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Sander169 first learn to tag. And second *facepalm. I'll pretend you actually didn't bring up the fact that there are wires inside the devices. Just FYI, no one deals with those wires hence no one cares. Wireless charging is a misnomer. Its actually inductive charging which is exactly what Apple calls it in their Apple Watch. True wireless is truly wireless, where you can actually move around and about with the device while charging It's just funny how Apple haters calls Apple device owners blind followers when Android fanboys actually think inductive charging is wireless charging. It's pretty clear you don't know what you're talking about

  • @Sundara229

    @Sundara229

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thomas Alex "It's pretty clear you don't know what you're talking about" Fits perfectly to you, since i never said something about apple or apple-owners itself. "Inductive charging" IS the same as "wireless charging". Even if you could charge your phone in a 50cm distance to the charger, it would be still inductive. "Inductive" doesnt mean you actually have to put your phone down on a charger, it only describes the principle or method of charging. www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-07/tkai-ofs070715.php Fact is, wireless or inductive charging is easier and more comfortable. Thats why everyone should adapt it.

    Very true, along with their software optimization. The fact that an iPhone with 1gb RAM can outdo an android with 3-4 gigs in multitasking and app opening just shows one thing that apple has done incredibly. Don't be mislead though, I'm still android all day everyday :)

    Android isnt a phone, its software. Google cant really tell OEMs how to design their hardware. For example, companies like OnePlus have had a similar feature for the longest now, while most companies havent even tried. But even then, Google does the next best thing: Do Not Disturb Mode, which came in in version 6.0 I think

    AMG from what i've seen and same reason I like him is because he makes professional videos, obviously not for geek and nerd who already know more about the products sometimes even before the release but to other people who only use tech and just follow tech news, there are lot more youtubers who can give better opinions about the same products but we're all not geeks, plus his editing is pretty neat. so it's not luck, you can't get a lot of subscribers via luck, you must make great content or make stupid sensation like Marina Joyce

    AMG Dave is getting notice now, good to hear that. but mkbhd been making video since long time ago, so he has those old loyal subscribers. But sometimes there are some "tech" channels that don't deserve their subscribers, or many of their subscriber aren't tech fans at all, like Unbox Therapy and *****. I mean why they put their video on tech category, they only review random stuff they get on ebay. put click bait on the title. plus they're apple fanboys

    Thank you for making probably the most balanced review of the iPhone 7 to date ^^ No overt praising like an Apple fanboy, yet no overt hating like any other fanboy. As someone who's used three Windows Phones since Window Mobile 6.1, to Android Marshmallow on an S6 Edge, and every iPhone since the 3GS, I can honestly say the blind hate between the three OSs is pointless. They all got their benefits and quirks, and if you don't like them, don't buy them, it's about as simple as it gets. Honestly, I love tech Michael, that's why I watch your videos even though frankly, I won't be able to buy a new phone any time soon. But all these slurs and insults being thrown around in discussions and comment sections spoil the fun :-/

    MusicAndCars1 I totally agree, it's like the "pc master race" vs the "console peasants" where pc may be the better option but consoles just work. All be it iPhones are only a $100- $120 more for the base model compared to the galaxy s8 phones I saw online -there are even cheaper galaxies at Best Buy rn but I think they are on sell- but iPhone just work. All the complaints in the video are valid, but I feel like people get so mad because I go out and spend another hundred dollars for the phone i want with the money that I worked for. All this hate really isn't need, it's their money so let them buy what they want.

    Thank you CDiP2277. As someone who sells phones for a living and (until trading it to upgrade to iPhone 7) owned both an Android flagship AND iPhone, this is what I tell people all the time. I have a super powerful computer that I'm on all the time, and even have access to THROUGH my phone on the go. As such, I don't NEED my phone to do 90% of the things that android fanboys criticize the iPhone for not featuring. This narrows daily driver decision down to "which is the best smartphone?". That's iPhone without a doubt. It's faster, smoother, has unrivaled texting, and I prefer the UI. Moreover, where some android devices may be great in one category but shitty in another, iPhones have remained either pretty good, great, or the best in every basic smartphone category (screen, camera, performance, etc.)

    IPhone, the phone that everyone likes to hate... why? Everyone's got their reasons but hey, people keep buying them every year at whatever price so they keep making them. But if Apple stopped making iphones and there were only android phones then these same people would complain about the lack of phones in the market and the lack of competition. These people are toxic.

    Display Mate says that the iPhone screen is as close to perfect and beats the s7. That's not saying the s7 screen is bad, it's just that amoled plus QHD does not mean a better phone, more is sometimes less, and optimisation will sometimes overtake pure specs. But the teen market has been marketed by Samsung to believe that pixels you cannot see make a better experience when all known science is to the contrary and well amoled is very subjective, I cannot stand it (sensitive eyes and use impinge for work so whites are much more important than blacks). Maybe if the Samsung fan club (mainly teens) reflected that there are other users out there that maybe don't buy their phone to watch videos, they will become more understanding and realise that the iPhone does everything a lot of the buyers want and those extra features (gimmicks to us) just don't mean nothing. So when I ask what is better I say what is important to you, and the iPhone does the stuff I need better and having used the screen it is so much better than the s7 I just hope that Apple never uses amoled ( their new LCD may not be ready for two years).

  • @Chitose2007

    @Chitose2007

    Andy, you might want to check all of your statements. iPhone is and always will be the most popular phone for the adolescent market. Studies year after year(2014 and 2015) have shown that the iPhone taps well into 60% of the teen market. Lastly, you misunderstood what Display Mate said, they said that the iPhone 7 screen is near perfect in color reproduction and thus images and video that can be reproduced natively(720p) will look almost naturally perfect...not that it was the perfect screen. In fact, they specifically mention that the screen is limited by the fact that it is an LCD display and will need to find new manufacturing process if it wishes to match some of the OLED color reproduction capabilities at higher resolutions, which it can't accurately do because data is naturally lost when downscalling higher resolution video. On a side by side comparison of Display Mate's iPhone 7 article and their Note 7 article, the Note 7 display beats the iPhone 7 display in almost every category except low light color reproduction(where they give it the "perfect" mark you are talking about). When Display Mate releases a detailed phone screen review, they brand it with various rankings within each category. If the display happens to be the best display they have ever tested at the end of their review, they mark it with that exact statement...stripping the previous holder of the title. Guess which phone currently has that title? The Note 7(earning very good to excellent in EVERY category). The near "perfect" color reproduction of native 720p in low light failed to dethrown it.

    Boring? Smartphones are becoming/have become consumer items. You don't expect cars to change design every year - maybe only every 3 to 5 years. There are decades ahead for the smartphone market. I doubt there's an infinite quantity of designs possible. Keeping the design for 2 or 3 years is only accepting the inevitable. Basically ALL smartphones are a slab of chocolate with a tweek here or there. There's only so much you can do with a bar of chocolate other than change the wrapper (colour/texture for the smartphone).

    There was one MAJOR item that sold me on the iPhone 7: 128GB internal storage (at least on my phone). I understand that I am in the minority here, but I wanted a phone with a ton of internal storage (MUCH faster than an SD card), and came to find out very quickly that there is no premium android phone offered with that much storage. So after 5 years of using Android and swearing up and down that I would NEVER buy an Apple product, I bought a matte black 128GB iPhone 7... and so far, it's the best phone I have ever owned.

    What Android users often miss when judging the iPhone's premium price, is that you're not just paying for the hardware (which has the top specs anyway), but also the other intangible parts of the Apple experience as well. You get guaranteed 4 years of software support, potentially more. No other company does this, Google stops halfway at this point (2 years) on their Nexus devices, and other Android OEMs, if you're lucky, support you for 18 months. You also get, the best, customer service of any other smartphone manufacturer. You also get iOS, which for some, is a deal-breaker, but with it, comes the best apps on any smartphone, Android apps tend to be iOS ports for a reason (better developer support, more revenue, less piracy, better incentive to develop). Also, Apple branding also helps, which keeps the phone value relatively high compared to competing Android flagships, while also having a higher demand, allowing the user to sell their device for a higher price, and make back most of their money, so they can then put that money into their next phone. So if you bought your iPhone for $900, but sold it for $700, you've only lost 200. Conversely, if you buy a cheaper Android phone, say OnePlus 3 for $400, the value it would have after 2 years would be very low ($100-150 on Amazon and Swappa, looking at the OnePlus One).

    I don't exactly agree with your point towards the end. You say that they don't deserve to be beaten down for making a product slightly better than last year, and this is true, but I believe that if you don't have anything new or interesting to share with the world, then what's the point in sharing? I personally am not an Apple user, although I used to be, I think it doesn't make sense to release little things every year that don't contain real progress. Let's say I made a really nice piece of software, and everyone loved it. People in forums have discussions about it, and it's very well received. A few weeks later, I add some small stuff that is minor to it and everyone, once again thinks it's pretty cool. A few weeks later, and I release another update that adds more small changes that are still nice, but not super important. This goes on for a while, and eventually, small updates and changes don't seem to matter to the forum people. A few months in, I've finally released enough stuff with these small updates to warrant a nice, big, juicy update or second version of the software, but it's too late. All of my small ideas have been just little increments that are nice, but not worth giving a whole lot of attention to. What I'm attempting to get at here, is consumers don't need all these little new things. If I wanted to get an iPhone, I think it would make the most sense to get a 6 Plus because there have been so minor changes to the phones, but nothing actually worth paying for. They honestly could've waited until next year to release a new iPhone that had all of the changes from the 6S, 7, and whatever they're packing in the "7S". I also find it sad that consumers are willing to clammer for days just to get the same device with minor improvements. I guess that's just humans being stupid, as we are, though. This is why I love unique and new phones like the Priv and the Moto Z. They were unique and awesome and really warranted an update. They had new technology that was ready to share with the world, and that's what real innovations it. Another thing is price. Don't tell me I'm some jealous prick that can't afford these devices. Even though I'm only fifteen, if I wanted them, I could compromise and save to get them. Some phones are worth a premium price because they do something new and different, or you're Samsung, where you believe, as long as you pack as much shit into the phone as possible, it's got some kewl new stuff, and it's beautiful enough(or something like that), you can sell it. Other companies like Moto, OnePlus, and ZTE are probably the definitive choice for people who really don't care about what phone they have, or do but don't want want to worry about spending money on something like a phone are perfect. I think that that strategy is wonderful because it promotes selling consumers wonderful phones without charging them a shit-ton of money, allowing the phones to be available to many more people. Also, if they don't really care what phone they have, then it shouldn't matter as long as it's not terrible. Hell, windows phone was also probably a great choice when that was still relevant for these kinds of people. In conclusion, I think that the iPhone 7 and 6S don't need to exist, as they do nothing to truly advance the world of mobile technology, and just make more money. Companies that go into the tech industry with the only main goal is making money. These companies will never truly advance technology. The old(and I mean, really old) Apple was a great lively company. They proved that technology could not only be a tool, but a beautiful part of the human experience. It's like they've de-matured, sure they've made enough money to buy, pretty much whatever they want, but what they've done with this huge sum of money is sad. They either need to evolve like the rest of the world or just rot, like the sad fruit they are.

    because why fix what isn't broken? also you have to keep in mind that next year is the 10 year anniversary and they moved to a 3 year cycle. The big "innovation" this year was the dual camera but at the same time this is the first iPhone with water and dust resistance. the little things add up, especially to apple users such as myself. Already i can actually tell there is a big speed difference and camera upgrade, from a 6s plus to a 7 plus.

    how's the iPhone 7's home button different than the OnePlus 3 home button... they both are haptic...

    IPhones 'haptic engine' mimics the press of a button, while op3 is just the vibration motor vibrating. "It's same, but different." -Apple

    I disagree with your headphone jack argument. I feel like "if its a problem, than this phone isnt for you" doesnt work for one single big fat reason; Its their only new flagship. So basically, if you want wired audio convenience, you cant get the latest specs and the latest features either, because Apple cant be bothered with making an option for everybody. Even the Moto Z, which only has a no-jack version (for a much more legitimate reason might I add!) released the Moto Z Play, which doesnt fix it, but is 100000x better then asking us to buy last-gen hardware I feel like I just got a giant "we dont care about you" straight from Apple themselves. Great video as always though

    What's the more legitimate reason with Motorola?

  • @ThatsPety

    Dimitri Ramos because in order for the Moto Mods to work, a ton of stuff in the phone had to be reorganized and rewired. It took some serious engineering to get Mods to function the way they do, and the had to fit the phone's components together like a Tetris puzzle essentially. There was absolutely no room. Then the Z Play came out, and they were more experienced with this new technology, and they had more room since the Z Play is thicker, so they brought it back

    Dimitri Ramos yeah, the Z Force was a bit thicker as well, so I don't blame you. I think it was the experience thing that finally pushed them back into the jack. It's not like they had examples to follow. Even so, even no jack on the Moto Z bugged me tbh

    the camera is definitely better but yet to surpass f1.7 1.4um pixel s7 camera or f2.0 1.55um 6p camera. 56mm telephoto is useless at f2.8 aperture and no OIS. Lens with higher focal length is more prone to shake

    I agree. I still did not find it better than S7 or even the last year's 6P which had a fabulous camera. It's the same old iPhone camera, it just works, but the competition is way ahead right now.

    I think color adjustment is adjective. What you like isn't what other people like. Anyway, s7 Camera or equivalent are the best FOR the hardware sensor. At least for me.

    Sander Gjertsen Østvold Did you read what i said? I didnt bash at iphone7. I said that the iphone7 has amazing camera but it's not even close to s7's camera. Specially the low light photos are soft and blurry and it cannot take sharp long exposure shots like s7. Besides s7 is way cheaper now

    It's not just the display being the same res that is annoying it's everything. Sure the display is controversial for me I can tell the difference between QHD and FHD and now VR is coming along phones should start going into 4K so they're VR ready with google cardboard and gear vr. Also 1080p screens are found on low to mid range android phones so for the price of the iphone it would be nice to have a higher res screen especially on the 7 plus. But it's not just that it's the lack of expandable storage, wireless charging, fast charging and of course the head phone jack. Of course you can use bluetooth headphones but it would be nice to have the option for it and I don't buy into the reason that apple removed the headphone jack for the taptic engine, they managed to cram the same thing into the apple watch surely they could have used the same sized taptic engine inside the iphone still having space for a headphone jack? People who buy iphones either have more money than sense or aren't really into tech and don't really care what phone they have as long as it's a smart phone but at the same time reckon apple is a big brand name and as celebs manly use iphones everyone else does. There's literally no reason to buy iphone over any android phone except being slightly faster but that's it and even that isn't worth it imo considering the limitations of IOS. Sure it's a good phone I won't deny it no phone is crap, but it's just not worth the money when you can pay for a high end android phone for slightly less money and get much more bang for your buck (literally with the note 7) thought I'd get that joke in there before anyone else can't wait to get the new note 7's. But even with low end androids now you get 1080p screen, mirco SD card support, some kind of gesture controls, NFC, bluetooth that allows file sharing and much more and that's just a low end one let alone the flagships.

    I'm a fanboy for good reason lol I've been an Isheep used my fair share of iphones know whats good about em and whats not, hated android until I switched and I know whats good and bad about androids. Obviously iphones are faster than androids because of the hardware and software is made by apple where as android there's many different specs for different phones it's harder to optimise the OS for the hardware though android's aren't massively far behind and the better speed isn't enough of a good thing to make me want an iphone again. But otherwise there's nothing great about iphones and if you find using an android phone complicated then you must be dumb or something. For example try sending a file via bluetooth to say a windows laptop with bluetooth or to a android or windows phone. You can't unless you mess around installing a 3rd party app on both devices on android you just open the share menu so how is that more complicated than iphone? Then try getting a song on your iphone. You gotta go through itunes either buy it on your phone or sync your phone with a computer and even then you can only sync to one pc. But let's say you're out and you suddenly think of a song you want on your phone you have no way to do it because you can't simply go to safari and download an mp3 again unless you download a 3rd party app and even then you can't listen to it in the default music app. So again how is android more complicated than iphone exactly? And every phone has the important features but it lacks convenient features that some may seem as a necessity like a micro SD card slot and you iphone users will say now "we don't need micro sd cards" or "we don't need QHD screens" but when iphone finally gets those features you'll all be creaming your pants over it. One of the arguments for iphone being better than android was that you could reach all four corners of the display with your thumb whilst holding the phone in one hand but now that's not the case and in fact many android phones while having bigger screens have managed to make the phone physically smaller and therefore easier to hold and use one handed again showing that iphones are more "complex" than androids.

    Was it too much work for your brain to read all that? You had a moto G -.- It's a budget phone fgs of course apps are going crash on that phone especially if you're talking about first gen model. Nexus 6 should have been fine for the most part and what did you find so frustrating about iphone other than the fact it was probably too difficult to figure out how to use 3 different buttons on the bottom of the screen other than one home button -.-

    ***** I've had very little issues with any phone I've owned be it iphone or android though not owned any android phone other than Samsung. Went from S4 to note 4 and now note 7 works fine and the latest versions of android have been the best by far android did use to be stupidly laggy even when scrolling which was one of the reasons i used to hate android until I gave it a go thinking that If I didn't like it i'll just switch back to iphone but loved it only thing I wish androids have was a physical silent switch like on iphones.
