I stand in awe of people who make their living praying for rain or praying that rain will stop. Grandpa always said topsoil on the side of a river is great but it comes at a high, high price. You never know when that check is gonna come due. Prayers for Iowa, MN and all the others impacted. Stay safe, Kurt.

Kurt: Great job documenting the pending catastrophe. I am a retired “community problem solver” of 45 years. I did it with different job titles in different positions in my 45 year career. Floods were one of the issues I dealt with. I am 6 years older than Uber Dad. I live 12 houses off of Highway 20 approximately 1200 miles down the road from you. I will tell you a flood story. In 2006 when the Eisenhower National Defense Highway Act of 1956 turned 50 years old, Upstate NY and the Northeast suffered a massive rainstorm that flooded I 90 and shut it down. Highway 20 (our Main Street) is the 200 year old Cherry Valley Turnpike. It was the only east - west road open in Central NY for two days. Every east west truck and car moving through Upstate NY had to use the 200 year old turnpike. Some times the old roads are the best roads LOL. I love your channel. I have watched religiously for a year. I will post why in a later comment. Keep up the great work and the great content.

I've been watching your videos for a couple of months and enjoying them. My brother told me about your channel. We were born on a farm near Smithland but left for California in 1956 due to droughts. I was 10 at the time but remember Mapleton for sure and heard of other towns you mention although don't remember being there as we didn't leave the farm much. My aunt owned McNutt's Sweet Shop in Castana.

That is a truss bridge. One of the maintenance nightmares. They are strong but require a ton of rust removal and painting. Also the bearings that the superstructure sits on the piers can be another nightmare to replace or maintain. Cool bridge but obsolete design. The current cable stay bridges are the way to go. Most good for 100 years and lots of redundancy built in.

I moved to CB in 1999, 2 weeks after we moved in there was a horrific storm that flooded the streets with water and some sewer water coming into my basement up through the washer drain pipe in the basement. I am lucky, the year after that the city did a major renovation of the sewer system so we have pretty much stayed above the water since then . This year i have seen many of our flood prone areas under 1 to 3 foot of water repeatedly and it's time the city addressed that issue. These area's flood every time there is a massive series of storms that go through. Maybe the cities need make their own protective ground works to surround their cities leaving smaller areas, that are easier to seal off instead of the extensive damage we are seeing now.

Several roads are closed and a lot more on the waters list. There is always people that will test the road closed for flood water signs, not a smart idea. When you said, or I just made up that you said it…IDK, that you are running back up the hill.. I started singing “ Run to the Hills “,” Run for your lives “. By Iron Maiden… now I have it stuck in my head, as well as my husband and son..lol 😂😂 stay safe, prayers for those affected 👍🙏🏻🙌

Been watching this mess unfold since the water went over the top of the dikes in Spencer (dike didnt break). Always thought Mapleton was a neat little town. The Decatur bridge is cool but a little unnerving to drive across :)

I remember the day the Lake Delhi Dam here in Eastern Iowa, failed. We received 10" of rain in 48 hours, as did many places. Downstream from the dam is the Great Jones County Fair Fairgrounds and the night before we were watching Alan Jackson in concert from 5th row track seats, the next day that track was under 6 feet of water. Imagine if it burst that day. I think that was the year Cedar Rapids was under 10 feet of water.

I hope it doesn't come to fruition, the forecast for the southern South Dakota appears to be more rain. Hopefully it'll be darn little rain, no one should bank on that. High hopes for everyone effected by the flooding will not give rise to serious devastation though I think it could be said devastation is already beyond the doorsteps. Guard yourselves and family, they are what's important. Thank you, Schmidt, for the update. Be wary and well.
