Iowa residents survey damage amid catastrophic flooding

Heavy rain in the West brought massive flooding to several states over the weekend. In Iowa, many are still surveying the damage as they try to move forward without flood insurance. CBS Minnesota's Jonah Kaplan reports.

No, these kind of homeless are different…because these people would accept help from the shelters and follow the rules…and they also all already work or receive social security if they are old enough. Whereas majority of the “homeless” living on the streets refuse to enter the shelters because they don’t want to follow the rules and don’t want to do the programs…they don’t want to stop using drugs and don’t want to have to work and follow orders of an employer….they say in interviews all the time that they would rather live on the streets so they don’t have to follow rules and they refuse the shelter people when they come around….they chose to live the way they are living…they don’t want any responsibility. The people that just had their homes damaged by floods aren’t like those other people. It’s not the same thing.

I grew up in L.A. area and it was much more polluted when I was a kid than it is now and I am in my 70s now. CA gas is higher than other states, and we have regulations that other states don't, but it's because CA has been trying to cut carbon emissions for decades. Notwithstanding efforts to reduce emissions cli.ate change does not recognize state boundaries and we are in this together . Take care where ever you live .

Since this report fails to mention it, or even say the words "climate change", it's important to note that for every 1° C increase in temperature, the air can hold 7% more water. The consequences of global warming, without a doubt, contribute to and intensify these now-frequent extreme weather events.

It’s a shame all of these places near rivers or in flood prone areas haven’t built some sort of water rerouting system that could carry excess water somewhere else….like those concrete canals they have in California. I often wonder if something like that would even work to prevent flooding where houses and buildings are. Or maybe zoning laws should change and make everything built in a possible flood zone or near a river be required to build higher off the ground so they don’t lose everything when this happens….especially because it’s very difficult to clean up from this amount of water damage.

He said the river was a half a mile away. That's just crazy. Since the people don't have flood insurance then I guess it's not considered a flood plain area. Water up to the rooftops is no joke. If that dam collapses there will be a huge surge of water down that river and well above the river banks. I see some people had sandbags around their homes but that won't stop a water surge from a collapsed dam. It will take months to replace that damaged train trestle/bridge. The costs are going to run in the hundreds of millions of dollars to repair the ruined infrastructure in that entire flooded area. How do people even prepare for a flood like that. They don't. I doubt they can stop a repeat flood of such epic proportions as global warming continues. The elderly residents won't ever recover knowing how expensive repair costs are for homes and vehicles and having no flood insurance coverage. It's a very unfortunate situation.

This is what happens when we mistake politics for governance. All public owned infrastructures - dams, bridges, wastewater treatment, wastewater treatment, power lines, cable lines, schools, fire, police and rescue need to be maintained and FUNDED prior to ANY tax write offs from individuals or corporations.we have gotten to the point where fake and self serving “charities” have taken priority over genuine public priorities. It is far less expensive to maintain levies and dams than the cost to respond to the initial disaster when they fail, repair all of the damage from the fail, and rebuild the entire dam. Why is there never enough money to do something right to begin with? Why are Americans so myopic? Why do we keep repeating the mistakes we made instead of learning from them? Surely after the New Orleans levies failed during Hurricane Katrina we learned that we could not afford to let these things deteriorate? It’s the PEOPLE who live in those areas responsibility to hold the local, city and state leaders accountable for maintaining the critical infrastructure in your area. You are paying the salaries for the people in charge of those facilities. Politicians are so busy running for office they are not doing the governing they are being paid to do!

THE POWER OF WORDS = 2024 $$ Words are the most powerful tools used by man As hearts and souls reach for one another. Sharing feelings of fear, wisdom and joy Or our love for a significant other. Where would we be without words Which inspire, unite and motivate. Songs, poems, stories, blogs, books, Wars, religion, love, lust and hate. Jesus preached words to the multitudes And nourished their hunger within. The stories we tell portray our spirit As examples of weakness, triumph or sin. When we fail to control the rage of our thoughts What is easy to say becomes hard to forgive. Words are visions that portray our intent The better we communicate, the better we live. By Tom Zart! God is my refuge and strength and my helper against my enemy. My enemy is God's enemy. God promised me tt his Hand will fight for me against the usa, my enemy. For see, d Lord has arisen like a mighty warrior, like a woman in Labour. Therefore d floodgates of Heaven shall open and earth roll to and fro like a drunkard because of d sins of the people of d earth. We are in pain, we r in anguish, we r like a woman in Labour but we bring forth nothing good, we bring forth death and destruction. For see, d Lord has come in fire, with his chariots like a whirlwind, to strike home with his furious anger and with d flaming fire of his repeoof. For d Lord saw and in his eyes, it was an evil thing tt there was NO JUSTICE and he was outraged tt NO MAN INTERVENED. High god of retribution tt he is, he pays in full measure, wreaking his anger on his foes, retribution to his enemies, so tt from d WEST, men shall fear his name, fear his glory from d rising of d sun. For what does d Lord DEMAND of u, O Man, but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God.
