Ioniq 5 Fit & Finish Issue - Watch This Before You Buy, Hyundai Can't Fix It!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hyundai tried for 5 months to resolve my fit & finish issue for my Ioniq 5. To date they've only managed to make it worse. So I'm sharing my experience plus providing some advice for new buyers. If you haven't bought yours yet, don't miss this!
I do think I notice more about flaws/defects/glitches than the average buyer, but once you see it - can you unsee it? Would you be happy if yours looked like mine? Would you be happy if Hyundai couldn't fix it and also refuses to acknowledge the defect?
Anyone else have similar issues or similar experiences?

Hello I’ve had my Ioniq 5 for 16 months now and the only issue I’ve had was the tailgate rattle, the dealership (Australia) attempted to fix it twice. They knew less than I did which is ok but the made no attempt to learn about the fix even when I sent them a Hyundai Canada service fix via hypertext link. So I fitted four half millimetre washers as per the Hyundai service update. It’s worked perfectly. What I can figure out is why the different parts of this company don’t talk to each other to make consumers experience better

Thanks! It's definitely a little scary buying a first model year. It feels like we are the beta testers for Hyundai. I thought it would be different since the ioniq 5 has been around in Korea and in Europe since 2021. In the same way, the ioniq 6 is using a lot of the same hardware and software as the ioniq 5, ev6, gv60 so they aren't starting from scratch. Hopefully everything goes smoothly!

This is a well known issue thoroughly discussed on the forum. I also had noisy tailgate, fixed myself by adding couple washers underneath each bumper stop. It made the hatch close with a little more "slam" but it solved my problem.

My I5 has developed a rattle in the last two months. I've owned it for a little over 14 months and have 39,000km on it. I tried a few of the forum recommendations regarding the trunk rattle issue. I added the washers underneath each bumper stop and I have had a week free of rattles. BUT, I don't have panel gaps like you do. Seems like you have more going on.

I probably wouldn't mind the gap from the visual appearance point of view, but the rattle would definitely bother me. If the dealer wouldn't be able to fix the rattle - I would definitely use Lemon Law, regardless of how "rare" the car is or how cheap/expensive the car is.

Your quest for perfection is admirable and I appreciate your honest reports on cars. However I believe it's always a risk to take a car to the dealership for anything but a major problem as your experience has born out. It's not a hyundai only problem in fact I believe they are pretty good! Probably a known good independent shop will care more about your satisfaction than the manufacturers. Plus any corporate organization is maddening if you're swimming upstream. I agree you got a bad one for fit they shouldn't have let that one get out!

Thanks Eric, I definitely feel like I learned a lesson here so wanted to share it. Regarding the panel gaps, make sure it's right before you buy it or you really are stuck with it. I had thought it would be an easy fix and I was wrong. I agree, I think Hyundai has been working with owners to address a lot of issues and they've done an admirable job. So I was really expecting that they would handle this panel gap alignment issue easily. Somehow it turned into this mess haha. Hopefully they'll figure out a fair resolution.

@CarsJubilee I will remember your advice when I go to buy! Thx. They have to be careful how much they are willing to address on these cars particularly with a youtuber I think because that could get mighty expensive if they had a sloppy run of production and they had to fix a few thousand cars. Could they fix your alignment? Of course. They could Tear down the whole back end and redo it. They have to draw the line. I bet some qc worker didn't want to make waves and stop the line.

At this point, it would be best to have the dealer fix the rattle. Before opening a new case, try isolating the source of the rattle by lying in the cargo area while someone drives the car around an empty parking lot. Then, repeat the test with the hatch open to determine if the rattle is coming from there or elsewhere in the car's body. Once you've identified the source of the rattle, open a new case with the dealer and specify where the rattle is coming from. Good luck!

Mine was escalated at the 2nd trip into service and Hyundai has been sending its own engineers out to diagnose, supposedly they fixed the rattle issue since my car went in for the 3rd visit but I can't confirm since I haven't seen it in close to a month. Mine sounds like the whole hatch is shaking up and down at the latch area. Based on my gopro falling off the back windshield, I believe it's getting bounched up and down quite a bit. Thanks, will report back once I see my car haha.

Hey Victor. Personally I wouldn't mind about a slight misalignment of panels as long as there is no noise. It is annoying that they made it worse though. Regarding fit and finish on my mid spec trim Ioniq 5, I have notices some rattles with time which are annoying. Some coming from the dash and one coming from what seems to be the rear seat row (I have tries adjusting and ensuing the seat adjustments are clicked in place). My car is due for a service next month, on booking it in I mentioned if they can look at this rear seat rattle, I assume the dash can't be fixed and it is less of an issue. As mine was one of the earlier ones here in the UK, I don't think the service technicians would have had much time and there perhaps wont be many known issues and fixes at the dealership network. I will have to keep you posted. One thing I would note is that on the Ioniq 6 show cars some journalists mentioned it seems to be more premium in the interior, so I wonder if Hyundia has already learned from the fit and finish of the car.

  • @CarsJubilee

Ahh mine has been surprisingly quiet all throughout ownership until they fiddled with it but I've heard countless owners mention their trunks rattling from day 1. Very curious if Hyundai will put out a TSB for it in all markets as it's clearly a widespread issue. Let me know how things go, US owners are saying the dealerships can't fix it properly. I think the roundedness of the Ioniq 6 will definitely help. Hard creases and straight lines spanning across different body panels and trims can be difficult to align properly and the Ioniq 5 has both of things. Mine just happens to be off at a '4 way panel/trim crossing' with straight horizontal and vertical lines all meeting together at one point and those would be the most obvious - when things don't line up straight. Very curious to see how the first round of ownership goes for Ioniq 6 owners, my guess is it should be better in fit and finish.

@@CarsJubilee Good that yours is quiet other than the trunk issue. I am surprised about my car having some noises as I haven't done many miles (under 3K mi, I was planning on doing more driving by now haha). I oonder if Hyundai will put a bulletin out for all noise/ vibrations issues and possible solutions, interior and exterior. I can imagine yours being fiddly to adjust as one adjustment may cause several more required. I only of kitchen/ bathroom cabinet hinges being a bit fidley as they are with the multiple adjustments. I don't know if you watch the Munro channel but they mentioned before that there can be slight issues with cars at the fabrication stage where the panels need to be finessed early in the manufacturing before bonding/ welding / riveting etc. So it could be that the problem is more so with the trunk opening rather than the hinge adjustments. Perhaps the side panels are welded out slightly more at the roof or chassis on one side. It may be that that is within wide tolerances for the Ioniq 5 during early manufacturing and QC. Perhaps it has improved for more recent deliveries. Yes I think you are right about the Ioniq 6. We will have to wait an see. I will keep you posted on when my car gets serviced, I don't have high hopes to be honest.

Mine's been serviced at Burns Hyundai in Cherry Hill. But truthfully I think they've done alright with servicing. The paint issue and the hatch rattle I think would have likely happened at other dealershipers too, the Ioniq 5 is still super new and certified techs are doing these things for the first time. I wouldn't expect better elsewhere. Luckily they at least provide loaners, no one else in my area provides loaners. Their Genesis side of the dealership has been excellent too so I think it mostly falls on corporate. I have cases open for both of my EVs and the dealership is just the middleman at this point since it's above their heads. Hyundai sends their own field engineers out to look at my cars and the dealership is just a holding location, they do whatever the engineer tells them to do.

The misaligned panels wouldn't bother me too much. I'm sure it's more noticeable in person. The rattle and the scratched paint from the dealership would annoy me. If the trunk rattle ends up being a issue for alot of customers they might create a fix kit for the service centers. My Genesis G70 had a horrible rattle in the sun roof. That's what I thought, but all their fiddling has just made it worse. I thought maybe next steps would be order a replacement liftgate and see if that makes it any better but that's never been on the table as an option. Maybe the holes made during assembly are off by a little bit?

My corporate contact had said that he might be able to push that through as an option if it's not too costly. But I asked what that does to my warranty and he was not sure either. Also there won't be many shops here with any ioniq 5 experience because it's so new. It's still a possible option but I'm afraid of what might happen if my chosen shop makes things worse and Hyundai refuses to cover the costs. Currently they won't even acknowledge it's not to spec.

Hyundai technical service is terrible, they always avoid doing any work and just do what they can to get you to go away. Never again. My legacy IONIQ was riddled with problems and I ended the lease early.

Victor, your expectations for the brand will not be met by Hyundai; I guarantee you the vast majority of their customers have no interest or expectations of addressing these details. I predict the issues with the back of your car will NOT be fixed.

I think you are right, I'd heard good things about them buying back when they can't fix and was hopeful they'd offer a fair resolution but after 5 months of back and forths they still don't want to admit there's an issue. It's a shame because it's such a cool looking car, but every time I look at the back it just doesn't look right.

Just purchased a Model Y about a month ago. My wife and I went over the fit and finish for 10 minutes. I was expecting panel gaps and trim issues. Found nothing. It did have a rattle in the B pillar that I noticed a couple of days after delivery. Had to take it back but they fixed it on the first try. So, all good after a month.

Very nice! Model Y is definitely on my radar right now and the general consensus I've heard has been that fit & finish is pretty good now. Glad to hear that's been the case and that they were able to fix the rattle!
