That was a great place to visit when we were there. I think they were still adding stuff as I don't remember a lot of that furniture. Next time we are there, have to check it out again. Going to have to book several weeks vacation to see all the stuff you are adding to my bucket list LOL. Thanks for the wonderful tour. Loved the commentary.

It was a beautiful but heart-breaking video. Why someone feels they have the right to move into another country and depose and conquer the First Nations and original peoples is beyond me. I know here in Canada it sadly happened that way as well . Slowly there is getting to be a better understanding of First Nations here but it will take a long time and can never be what it once was. Thank you for this look at the Hawaiian monarchy . I wish I could see it for myself one day. Mahalo :)

When you do go, you will get an even fuller experience of what was done to Hawaii. It is so clear that the overthrow was illegal, there never ws a treaty of annexation to the US, Hawaii was a sovereign nation with treaties with England, France, Japan and several other countries. That is why Kalakaua became the first monarch to go around the world. I worked at the San Francisco CA Sheraton Palace and was shown Kalakaua's chair with his nameplate on it. I was also told that most likely he was murdered there. Who knows? A couple of decades later I went to the Sheraton Palace asking about the chair. Nobody knew anything about it. I snooped a bit, but didn't find it. Hmm.

Another great video! I actually don't remember how many times we've visited Iolani Palace! Some times we just go and walk around the grounds. I don't know why, but we always feel drawn there when ever we're in the islands. I tell everyone this is a "must see" when they ask me what to see when visiting Hawaii. Our last visit inside we couldn't walk up the staircase and I was disappointed. I don't know why, and it may not seem like much, but it was just another one of those feelings that I believe everyone should experience. I see some new things have been added since our last visit inside and I'm so glad they keep adding pieces to preserve it's history. Looking forward to our next visit!! Thanks again Luke!

Tom S do you remember if there was carpet on the stairs case? Iʻm not sure but Iʻm thinking they were trying to preserve the staircase or maybe itʻs a liability because some elder people might fall. We are lucky to have been able to walk up those stairs. Thanks for appreciating! =)

@@PhotoLukeHawaii I don't believe there was carpeting on the steps when we were able to use them back in the '90s. I remember going in the throne room and it was empty except for the thrones. I seem to remember that only the dining room and one bedroom was furnished and all the other rooms were barren. Will definitely have to visit next July (We have reservations at the Hale Koa and plane reservations will be next month!! :-) ).

I'm old enough to have seen the palace when it was still being used as the state capitol. It was in pretty sad shape in those days with cheap interior walls installed all over. I went and saw it again in the late seventies after restoration was well underway, but it didn't look anywhere near as good as it does now. Thanks for posting this Luke, I enjoyed it very much!

Dan Cross seems like the word King was adapted after western influences. I think before they were called Ali'i nui I think it means big chief or supreme ruler. Each island had their own Ali'i nui. Kamehameha I became the first King of all of Hawai'i when he united this islands through war and agreement. He did have Western influences. He made friends with traders and acquired firearms over time. In his drawings he is wearing Western or European clothing. I was reading that he outlawed human sacrifices and instituted mamalahoe which protected the common people from unduly brutal aggressions from powerful chiefs. Sorry so going back to King I guess they had it but, called it something else and it evolved over time to a more Western or European ideal over time. I'm guessing. =)
