Nice video, it’s a test very few do I think but necessary. I try to do it on every mash when I remember, thanks for sharing your knowledge 🍻👍🏻

I'm so glad I found your channel. I was getting frustrated with my mash conversion and being very green to all grain brewing, I wan't sure where I was going wrong. This test should solve my issues. Cheers!

Glad I could help! Just remember 5% or so difference in efficiency means nothing, even 10% is not worth talking about.. Consistency is where its at, as long as you can numbers, all is good. Cheers!

Thanks for this update. If you mash for an hour for basically all brews do you think you would need to do this?

There is a tricky part with Betadine I've found... Ratio 1:1 of Betadine and Mash (1 or xy drop's of each) and Betadine first if the solution won't change the colour starch's gone. Paradoxically I don't do this sugary test on my lagers if using same malt water etc but tell you what happened. The bloody temp probe was playing up and I didn't notice that of course no sugar test too all process up to vessel and then... couldn't get FG lower than 1022 (supposed be 1014+/-). Temp probe was out 7C... Really good point Gavo to mention this topic as a part of every single brew. I know it's hard to match colours on camera mate, I did it couple times too with mobile in 1 hand and the other to do that test with same drops down and when I've seen it on computer it was looking different again. Great idea to share and remind that. Cheers mateeee;-)!!

Cheers mate. Ive been testing since I bought a $5 Iodophor when I got the Brewzilla. Seems like I've been using it correctly. I did notice grains go black like you mentioned if any are in the sample 🍻

Never seen it here, it was hard enough to get the regular stuff! Used to be able to buy it everywhere, chemists etc but they don't have it these days. I'll keep an eye out though thanks! Cheers Alex!

Thanks for the video. It looked to me that using Idophor or Betodine was kinda tough to be sure of the result. I know I had a helluva time finding REAL iodine like you said. My local Walmart here in the USA sold some kind of clear crap that was labeled iodine, but wasn't. I don't know how they get away with that garbage. I took it back and left a nasty review. I did find REAL "tincture of iodine" at a pharmacy which works wonderfully. I use about a tablespoon of wort in a white bowl I got from the dollar store. (I only use it for iodine tests) just one or two drops and it will go noticeably purple/black immediately if there is starch. If conversion is complete, it stays yellowish orange. Cheers!

The test to the starch thingy was clearly shown but I had difficulty with the beer sample ones detecting a difference. The first time I did an Iodine test fos on my first All Grain Brew some 50 years ago and I must have mashed for 3 hours before I told myself that was it. Since then I have hardly ever done it because I find it inconclusive. I Mash for a time now. Someone below mentions clear Iodine. That seems to me to be a good idea.

I just mash for about 60 mins for an ale and if I were doing a Lager at lower temperatures 90 minutes most of the time I add 10 minutes onto it so its 70 mins and 100 mins I tried the Iodine test once and found that 50 mins it was ok but I find 60mins is enough, mash PH is what I need to tweak

Was just telling my buddy about doing this, I’m definitely going to look into this. I have a Robobrew and my numbers were way off. I should have been around 9% ABV but only hit 6.5% ABV. And have no idea why. Anybody have any thoughts on this please let me know.

The Home Brew Network everything seemed ok, I’m still new to brewing but this was the only one that was way off. Even though it was off it’s probably the best best beer I’ve made. But I’m definitely considering doing the iodine test on future brews.

@@tommanning7337 Its a big beer, some drop if eff is expected unless you really work the mash, stirring etc and also being a dark beer pH could of been off a bit too. Cheers!
