How can you tell if your mash rest is complete? In this video I show a simple test you can do to see if your mash has finished converting the starches to sugars using iodine. This can help shave a few minutes off your brew day in a hurry, or see if you need to wait a few more minutes.

Great video man, I've been looking for this kind of video but it didn't come up with all my 'iodine test' keyword searches. I'm brewing tomorrow and am looking to do an iodine test for the first time, cheers!

Awesome. Yeah you'll be surprised that most mash Conversion is done pretty fast, especially lighter base Malts. Most of the time you could do 30-45 min mash and be fine.

Do u cool the wort before trying the iodine? When I try this, the iodine seems to disappear and dissolve into solution.. thought maybe it was heat related or maybe my iodine is bad? I don't know.. thoughts?

No, you should not need to cool it. Try to do it right away and you'll see the difference. The starch conversion doesn't take very long for most recipes. Most is done in about 15 minutes. Believe it or not... 60 minute mash is typical just to make sure your specialty grains are completely done with conversion. I've actually done a lot of 30 minute mashes , especially when I'm doing a lighter colored beer with very little specialty grains.
