Hello Gash, As a beginner home brewer, I would like to say that your videos have been a real help. Getting informations from experienced people like you I think is priceless! I would have a question About the fermzilla, How could I proceed to draw a gravity reading sample if I was not fermenting under pressure yet? Or even at the beginning of fermentation before applying pressure as I understood that applying pressure early on fermentation isn’t too recommended. Once under pressure i guess a picnic tap would do fine. Thank you once again for sharing your experience. My regards Charlie

Hi Gash. I have recently come upon your videos because I just ordered 2 55L FermZillas. I have found your videos very explicative and full of great information for when I receive my FermZillas which include the pressure kits and cooling/heating coils. I have not seen you use the cooling coils as you have fermentation chambers, but I will still throw my question out: I am trying to plan out my connectors/system before I receive my order, and also because I live in small rural Spain where I have little access to hardware and it all takes a while to arrive anyways. My question is how to connect the inlet/outlet of the coils to my water source - would a 3/8¨ John Guest to 1/2¨connector work? Will the 3/8¨ John Guest make a proper seal? - I see you have various of thse connectors you use for your connections and was wondering if you could let us know. Thanks!

There is a much better way to pop the top. Unscrew the outer lip to near the end, stick a flat head screw driver under one of the carbonation caps then lever the screw driver down over the outer lip. Works every time.

I'm dryhopping through the gas post by just removing the carb cap. I cut a funnel out of a soda bottle neck so it matches. The offgassing during active fermentation is way faster through narrow hole so risking oxygen going in is low. On second dryhop after fermentation I will pump co2 slowly through pickup line and do the same trick from the gas post -> co2 running out -> no oxygen going in. I will always ferment 30psi as my room temp is about 22 which according to force carb charts gives me roughly the same volume of co2 and when cold crashing I will vent it down to my carbing pressure and attach the co2 bottle to the fermenter so it will carb to my serving pressure during cold crash and be ready to drink straight out of the keg.

I think when purging oxygen with co2 the idea is to dilute the oxygen so much not blow it out. So 30psi then vented to 1psi then back 2 30 then vented again will remove 99.9% of oxygen via dilution

It depends on the beer but its usually when the krausen starts to drop or a couple of points out from the end of ferment. Typically thats about day 5ish (4-6) with a healthy ferment, the advantage of these fermenters is that you can see what is happening. A tilt would help, especially for beginners. Cheers!

You can speed up fermentation times by increasing temps. However certain yeast will then throw off flavors/esters. Fermentation under pressure helps suppress these esters.

Hi mate! Cheers from Brazil! Thank you for your video! I learned a lot! Just one question: if I want biotransformation for a NEIPA can I use a hop bag in the fermzilla so I can take the hops off for the second dry hopping? I thought I might attach a nylon in the hop bag and screw it where it should be the extraction cap. And latter dry hopping with the rest of the hops. Do you think it is a good idea or should I just throw the hops from the top like you did and never mind about taking them out? Cheers and nice video!

  • @HomeBrewNetwork

You can try that for sure mate, as long as you dont ruin the cap or whatever you use and its air tight still, give it a go, I cant say Ive tried that method. My NEIPAs are lucky to be warm in the keg for 7 days so I dont worry too much the hops being in there. But go for it! Cheers!

You are more likely in the all rounder, but if it happens shoot some co2 down it. Its one reason I'd do my usual 23L batch but only keg 18.5L ish.. Again comes down to how big the dry hops is. Cold crash really reall y helps to get those hops down, better than anything else, I usually nudge the fermenter during cold crash a few times and help get them hops down. Cheers!

You dont want hops sitting in a bottle or keg, keg can be ok if you're going to drink it fairly fast, but it can get messy and isnt ideal.
