Eh, honestly a lot of details of this game's coding are really haphazardly. The team just did a good job of sweeping them under the carpet so that the average player won't run into them. They also didn't anticipate (or care) people would eventually emulate the game and use tools to perform frame-perfect actions.

hey there, paper mario dev here this was actually supposed to be a city level, but we ended up shipping the cart with a bug that turned it into an ice level. we pretended this was how it was supposed to be but it wasn't.

So they are just standing inside snowmen for years to do this job... That is depressing.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand many frame-perfect events that are unlikely to all align just right.

I dunno if you'll find this in the sea of KZread comments, but I think I found some unused sounds in Paper Mario 64. For context, I was reviewing the contents of a SFX dump I found to try to figure out where everything was, as it wasn't labelled by anything other than the sound bank, the instr. (you'd think it's instrument, but the instruments AND sounds were both via this label), and sound (or snd., which was pretty much always 0000). While reviewing, I stumbled upon the contents of bank 12. Which had... I can't really describe them too well. They seem to be voices saying "hey..." and "wha?", and the other two sounds in the bank were just pitch-shifted variations of those sounds. What really intrigues me is that I don't recognize these sounds, *period.* From what I can gleam, they're unused, but since I don't really have the time or know-how to check, I can't tell for sure. It's no Paper Mario crash, but it's a Paper Mario mystery,

I find it charming how the invisible characters still turn to face you in order to talk to you. I mean, I get that there's no reason to *disable* that behaviour, but it's still neat.

Pressing the A button 0.5x times to build up speed for 12 hours to get into a parallel universe while jumping over a flag pole with a koopa on the death barrier with some mysterious goomba to get to an invisible barrel that gives you a cloud item when swallowed by Yoshi only when the cartrige is tilted after getting into a room with lava after skipping chapter 1 crashes Paper Mario. If you don't get it there's a bunch of references to famous Mario glitches.

I... Paper Mario was my absolute favorite game growing up. I'd play it all the way through at least once a year until I moved out of my dad's house, and I was certain the game had no more secrets, that I had found everything there was to find. 17 years, and I never knew about the letter in that tree until I saw it in this video. I never saw mention of it in any of the walkthroughs I used, and I never managed to stumble on it myself
