    I like the small detail that Nolan was born after the Purge. He has no idea if life before Viltrum’s Purge was “better”, he just commits genocides and betrays his friends because he believes in a history written by the Viltrumites who committed genocides and betrayed their friends.

    Because you look at this from a normal human's perspective. Nolan is a Viltrumite, he's over 2000 y/o and this is probably not the first planet that he had conquered. In fact, in the comics after he leaves Earth he starts a new family with a bug-woman and has another son lol. For him his Earth wife is just a small period of his life. Probably like a hamster to us regular humans. Yes, humanity definitely changed his views on life in the end, but at this point in the story that we see here - he doesn't really care yet.

  • @Cr0misc
    @Cr0misc10 ай бұрын

    Rewatching this entire episode after reading the comic completely flips the viewer's perspective of Nolan. When you originally thought he was always deep down a monstrous scumbag who was itching at the opportunity to cut loose and be himself, it turns out he became so accustomed to living on Earth that he actually hoped Mark would never get powers, so he can continue living there in peace. Earth changed him, Debbie changed him....and then his worst fears came true and Mark's powers awakened. It meant Viltrumites are now surely going to take interest in Earth, and because of this Nolan experiences internal turmoil. To be a loyal soldier of the Viltrum Empire, or to be a loving husband, father and protector of Earth. This entire sequence, the entire part...It's not Nolan trying to convince Mark that the Empire takeover of Earth should be allowed. It's Nolan trying to convince and delude *himself* that he is still a loyal soldier. When in reality, he is not. And when he later realizes this, and realizes how low he has sunk by nearly beating his beloved son to death in an effort to convince himself that he is still on the side of the Empire, he breaks into tears and leaves Earth.

    Yeah, the hints were there right from the very beginning. When an ecstatic Mark announces he's finally getting his powers, Nolan isn't happy at all. He's dead serious, and asks Mark if he's absolutely sure. Then, later that very same night, he kills all of the Guardians. If Viltrumites hadn't been so compatible with human DNA, then the planet would probably have been deemed a waste of time and the Empire might not even have bothered conquering it. But Mark coming into his Viltrumite blood meant that Omni-Man's course was now set, and Earth was a key strategic resource that HAD to be captured. Mark made Nolan very proud, and all the more so when he started taking after him.... but he never actually wanted that to happen, and knew Mark would never forgive him when Mark found out what kind of man he really was. If the kid had never gotten his powers, Nolan could have gone right on being a hero and a family man. And then when Mark and Debbie eventually passed, he could probably just have quietly slipped away and told his superiors Earth wasn't worth bothering over. But, alas...

    Some spoilers from the comic, but it's also rather telling that after the Scourge Virus nearly destroyed the Viltrumite population to the point they're not even in the triple digits anymore, their empire didn't collapse. It just stopped expanding. Not even a hundred viltrumites remain at this point, and they still keep the rest of the galaxy at bay. One can only imagine how terrifying they were when there were thousands of them. Kind of puts a terrifying edge on the fact that Mark proves that Viltrumite/Human crossbreeds are just as viable as full blooded Viltrumites. Earth is key to the Viltrumites regaining their numbers without diluting their capabilities

The Scourge Virus was a very recent development, so recent that the Viltrumites are still trying find a solution to their population problem (since even a super race can't regrow a viable population amongst themselves with just a few dozen individuals without there being genetic complications.) Nolan discovering that Earthling/Viltrumite hybrids are just as viable as full viltrumites was more of a happy accident then an actual option the Viltrumites were taking seriously. Heck, even after the other Viltrumites discovered this themselves they still didn't take it seriously out of pride until certain events in the comic forced their hand. Because yeah, turns out Nolan is actually one of the less stubborn and more introspective Viltrumites, if you can believe it. He's an Imperialist and believes in a perfect society through eugenics, but he has none of the hate or energy that these kind of people usually express. It's his reality, his view of the world. As far as he's concerned, this is normal and how the world is meant to be. Also, one of the words for "Power" in latin is "Imperium"., which is also synonymous with "Empire" and "Government". Never thought about it, but when Omni Man first came to earth, he didn't immediately use force to conquer it, like he was taught and raised to do his entire life. Then there's his "we have a responsibility" quote, again this is his life, it's all he knows. And yet Nolan has these moments of hesitation. The seeds for the whole "Nature vs Nurture" could be argued were in Nolan long before Mark was born. Mark just helped trigger that internal conflict. God I love the character writing here. Especially the scene with a young Mark playing sports, where Nolan sees it as a waste if time, then Debbie rags on Nolan to be proud of what they created, be happy because of Mark. Not surprised Nolan seemingly one day snapped 180°, killing the Guardians. He probably fooled himself too well, then had a sudden realisation of the reason why he was there in the first place, living two lives, as Nolan, or the Viltrumite Conquerer. Common troupe in the spy genre, believing the life you've infiltrated is your own, and putting your own desires above the mission.

    I think the way Nolan presented himself to humanity and starting a family was probably "standard procedure," or at least not unusual. Taking a few years to establish himself as the #1 superhero and gain the trust of leaders and governments is just a normal task given Viltrumites are effectively immortal. Only when he started to love his family did he really stray from his mission. Omni-Man was already the #1 superhero long before Mark got his powers, yet in all that time it didn't seem like he used his position to become a military or political leader.

    The whole purpose of their mission is to find species that are compatible with Viltrumites so they can repopulate and grow their Empire. They have no problem playing the waiting game. Nolan never counted on caring about any of them, he was always within the perimeters of his mission. Blend in, reproduce, conquer.

    Nolan was given like 500 years to conquer Earth, which by galactic standards is considered a remote and "boring" planet, it was basically a vacation for him. Also, Viltrumites try and adapt to each planet first, they don't always come in guns blazing. And after Nolan discovered that human DNA was basically a perfect match with Viltrumite DNA and could produce children that were like 99.9% Viltrumite, he realized how important it was to keep Earth's population safe.

    A lot of what Nolan was saying was more to convince himself more so than Mark but the part where he mentions not wanting his son to watch the people he cares about grow old wither and die while he is still young was utterly genuine. That would be horrible to see friends and family you grew up with and are the same age grow old and die while you are effectively frozen in time. To also know that all the people you will ever know or care for will end up the same while you have to watch it all helpless to stop it.

    Nolan was amazingly calm given all the fighting he had just been through. Cecil threw everything he had at him, including Frankenstein monsters and a Kaiju. Yet, he still explained everything well. "Like a pet" is brutal, but accurate given his power and longevity. Think about how we love our dogs and cats, but know we are going to outlive them and we are far more sophisticated. The only part that doesn't work for me is "Viltrumite blood is so pure you're almost full blooded." That makes no sense given how chromosomes work particularly given that Mark is male and the Y chromosome is smaller than the X he received from his mother.

Despite this, every day we have to accept and live with the fact that the time we spend together will only be a brief moment in our lives. It's a painful reality to accept. Now imagine that, but with your own wife. Before it was clear to Nolan that Mark had powers, it was a possibility that he will eventually leave too. To put into perspective how long they will live. Assuming a Viltrumite lives ONLY 2,000 years 77 earth years (average us lifespan) is only the equivalent to 3 years for them. Shorter than highschool lasted. That means being married for 50 years is the equivalent to dating someone for 2 years for them. a 'Generation' for humans is only 20-30 years, meaning every equivalent year an entire new generation of humans occurs. And if you look at info from outside the series (comics,handbooks) Viltrumite's likely live 10,000+ years easily but is speculated to be near infinite as aging slows down more and more as they get older. If it is ONLY 10,000 years dating someone for 77 years is like dating someone for a couple of months. Aka he has been dating nolans mom for the equivalent of a dozen or so days for him. If i met a person and we immediately became inseparable for a couple days and then they left. I wouldnt be that sad about losing them. Him calling his wife a pet is almost an overstatement.

    When you hear this for the first time and you go back to the first episode or two, it really dawns on your that it was really Mark setting things into motion and not Nolan. Sure Nolan killed the guardians of the globe but that was only AFTER he learned that Mark had gained his powers. Something that I’m not sure he wanted to happen. But once Mark was confirmed to be a pure blooded Viltrumite, that was pretty much Nolan’s queue to get his plan into motion.

    True Nolan had come to accept that Mark wouldn't have powers, after watching the Atom Eve Special it's pretty clear that he expected him to have his powers when he was like 11 or 12. By the time Mark was a teenager he had already given up on his son having powers, so he was gonna live his life as a human until Debbie & Mark died of old age and then proceeded to continue his mission

  • @christophermoore6110
    @christophermoore61109 ай бұрын

    I can tell that Nolan loves his son a lot more than Eve’s dad loves her. The sadness he carries with him, that he masks with anger, shows that he truly loves mark and Debbie. But he’s loyal to Viltrum above all else, and he shows it. But Eve’s dad has only ever discouraged her, always telling her what her life should be because all he wants is for her to love the most boring normal life. Instead of supporting her even a little, he begrudgingly goes along with stuff that he clearly does not want. Because it’s all about him, not what his daughter wants. Nolan clearly loved and supported his son when he was younger. Obviously I’m not saying Mark deserved to be pummeled to near death, but at least we actually see Nolan loving and supporting his son before doing the most batshit insane thing he could have done.

    @kaibaman2102 If you really want to know, and what I type is spoilers from the comics. Viltrumites do think of them as a superior race, but what "Viltrum DNA is so pure" actually means is Vilturmites can crossbreed with different compatable beings and those children eventually become more Viltrumite as they age. Rather than a 50/50 split. The offspring will come close to their powers and appearance, but never 100%.

I even thought that Nolan is acting like a rebel or being a criminal in Viltrum - only for him to reveal the true scope of Viltrum and its galaxy spanning empire. And the fact that its an empire, that alone really put to scope why a coalition of planets are even forming just to even have a fighting chance against a planet full of Saiyan like Supermen geez....

    Nolan wasn't trying to convince Mark that his way is right, but trying to convince *himself* that Debbie's way of life is wrong. He's caught in his own mental juggle of wether or not to bettay his comfortable, easy going life as a writer/superhero and throw it all away to be the loyal soldier he was bred to be. I hope that he sees that the Viltrumites ways are wrong and redeems himself, somehow.

    The thing about Nolan referring to Debbie as a pet is that it’s a lot less heartless than it would initially seem. From Nolan’s perspective, Debbie could never possibly live as long as any Viltrumite and she’s also a different species from Nolan, yet he seems to love her anyway. People tend to genuinely love their pets, even considering them equal to family, but those feelings won’t ever change the extent of any pets lifespan nor the difference in power between a pet and it’s owner. What Nolan said was certainly upsetting and dehumanizing, but from his perspective, no more inaccurate than how we view our own pets… with one VERY significant legal difference. 😅
