Investigating the Octopus Murders | An American Conspiracy | The Last Days of Danny Casolaro

The 1980s were a time of allegation and scandal in America. Subscribe for more from Factual America: bit.ly/AlamoPictures
From the 1980 October Surprise, 1985-87 Iran-Contra Affair, and 1986-91 BCCI scandal, the decade seemed only to be going downhill. And in the midst of it all, the US Justice Department was accused of stealing PROMIS, a piece of software that could be used to create a programme that would allow the US government to spy on whomever used it.
Danny Casolaro was a writer, poet, and investigative journalist. At the start of the 1990s, he began exploring what had happened to PROMIS, and it led him to see the theft of this software as being at the heart of America’s other major scandals. Before he could finish his investigation, however, Danny was found dead in a hotel bathtub, with both his wrists slashed.
Did he kill himself, as the police believed, or was he murdered?
That is the question at the heart of American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders, a new docu-series on Netflix, directed by Zachary Treitz. He and co-executive producer Christian Hansen are Matthew Sherwood’s guests in this episode of Factual America. Together, they discuss what they found as they retraced Danny Casolaro’s footsteps in the last days of his life and what it was like for Zachary watching Christian disappear down a conspiracy rabbit hole before he himself followed him.
In the process Zachary and Christian uncover a murky web of scandal at the heart of American government. Or do they? Which of the incredible stories of Michael Riconosciuto, one of Danny’s major sources, and others can ultimately be believed? The filmmakers race around the country to interview subjects and get to the root of the story - all with the support and patience given to them by Netflix in the making of the series.
American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders takes a deep dive into the darkest corners of American business and politics. Make sense of it with Zachary and Christian in conversation with Matthew Sherwood.
“Once you dip your toes into [this story] it's almost like a tar... some sort of magic ooze that kind of gets into you, as soon as you touch it. It's like what they say about the abyss... you stare into it and it stares back. This is that story. You touch it and it touches you and it kind of consumes you.” - Zachary Treitz

Kenn Thomas wrote the first book on Danny Casolaro and Kenn Thomas worked at University of Missouri-St. Louis Archives. That's why the Netflix doc GOES to the Missouri archives to get the Danny Casolaro research papers. Too bad Kenn Thomas didn't get thanked at the end of the Netflix doc. Kenn Thomas passed on last year! I corresponded with him via email off and on over 20 years.

I haven't seen the docuseries but I was told the other day by someone who saw it that Kenn Thomas wasn't cited or mentioned. If this is true then it's wrong on their part. In my recent article on the Octopus, I credit Thomas and cite his article on Casolaro & octopus for the Disinformation website. I can't say I'm surprised though

@@writeralbertlanier3434thanks - turns out Kenn Thomas was citing Cheri Seymour in Thomas' book - yet for some reason misspelled her first name! Strange. Not just misspelled it but got it wrong. Anyway Trineday, the publisher of Cheri Seymour, just did a new podcast interview with Cheri Seymour and the two filmmakers of the Netflix American Conspiracy. So they really were relying on Cheri Seymour. She mentions in another radio interview how she also went to the University of Missouri archives to get Danny's research notes - yet again NO mention of Kenn Thomas! So yes I think there was some competitive turf dynamics going on. Let's face it - there's only a few conspiracy "publishers" - and it's a small "market" for "sales." hahaha. Cheri Seymour's first book was self-published. So I can see why she would be very protective of her research. So yeah Kenn Thomas unjustly got left out - but I think that maybe started with Cheri Seymour and it was just repeated by the Netflix film makers who relied on Cheri as their main source... I should see if Cheri's book cites Kenn Thomas at all.

@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 The impression l get is that the filmmakers of the docuseries are pretty much ignoring anyone else who actually researched, looked into and did the work on this subject before their doc. I researched Inslaw, Promis and Danny in 2010. I was interviewed on a podcast in March of 2010 called Media Monarchy about this for 2 1/2 hours. I gather this was before both the guys behind the Netflix doc got on to this. It strikes me as a way for them to colonize and appropriate Casolaro/ octopus/ Promis for themselves The fact that Kenn Thomas as well as his co writer Jim.Keith who came out with a book.about Danny and the Octopus in the 1990s are rendered invisible lends support to this. It's the kiss off for those of us who examined this previously I guess.

The police officer who found the reporter said the tendons in both arms had been cut about eight times, so deep that the hands could barely hold on. The reporter could cut all the tendons on one hand, but he would not be able to cut the second hand, because it is impossible to hold anything in the hand with the tendons cut. It couldn't be suicide.

My only question with all of this is why didn’t they just kill off the Hamiltons from the beginning and take the software that way? Danny would’ve never got involved had William not sued the DOJ in the first place and even after they sued, why didn’t they just pay the 6.8 million to make it go away? What if and just hear me out. What if the Hamiltons created the trap door from the beginning and found out that the DOJ was making way more money off of it than them and they sued? At that point the DOJ can’t kill them because they’re the only ones who can create the trap doors and they can’t settle in court because then they’d be admitting they did what William said they were doing. So instead they recruit Michael to make his own trap doors and just wait out the Hamiltons in court, which obviously worked. Idk man none of it makes sense. Like why is Micheal still alive?!! They can easily get to him in prison to kill him especially 30 years ago. Why keep a guy that knows that much alive? Idk….I’m taking my tin foil hat off now 😂😂

I think what they were going for at the end was that if one becomes to attached to a conspiracy they shouldn’t let it become their entire personality and consume their life. Although, I don’t think they were trying to make us feel crazy for the thinking Danny was murdered because they present an overwhelming amount of evidence that he was. In other words, it’s okay to find connections between a conspiracy (because in this case there definitely are connections) but don’t let it become all you think about.

In the USA, there are 4 ‘official’ independent branches of government. Over time, the National Security State has not been held in ‘check’ by the other three branches of government. In 1889, the US Congress - by one vote - formed a second collateral government: the National Security State: A fourth Branch of Government! The primary objective of the unelected National Security State is to influence - both overtly and covertly - world nations, (some might refer to this as world hegemony). Shortly thereafter, the Supreme Court affirmed or ratified its formation (vote 5-4). Ironically, the Chief Justice on that case forged the PLESSY. v. FERGUSON case - a case that essentially said some people are more valuable, more protected, and have more rights than others. Therefore, it was not a large stretch for this Chief Justice in this case to concede that some countries were worth more than others. Over the years, the democratically elected government has always deferred to the National Security State. So, when investigating the Contra Cocaine Train, the National Security State overruled prosecution. Same for the matters of Epstein/Maxwell (making available the many black books hard drives and government run pedophile train); etc. When pertinent questions are asked in a Senate hearing the National Security State shuts down the query by invoking COG (Continuity of Government). You can see this time and time again beginning during the Contra Cocaine Train inquires by the Senate. The founding fathers were earnest in saying that the USA should trade with all, but never to entangle itself in the political or military business of other nations. By the late 1890s however, elements of the country fought to form the National Security State whose intention was imperialism: which is to have wars all over the globe for profit. An anti-imperialist league of many powerful men attempted to fight them. But big banks greased the wheels of the legislatures and Supreme Court and that was that...! Even Mark Twain spoke out against it. Soon the USA had its armies around the world stealing on behalf of the Brown Banking Brothers, later Untied Fruit Company, Preston Bush's bank, and so on.

This is a well-made documentary on an objectively interesting topic. As several reviewers have already alluded to, there are a suspicious amount of extremely low scores on IMDB here that tell their own story. The core accusation is that the American government seized on an opportunity to gain an advantage over their rivals via an emergent technology. To me, this is a perfectly plausible scenario. And I’m not here to cast judgement on the legality or morality of subsequent events. Purely looking at it from a self-preservation perspective, what’s most likely to have occurred here is quite a smart move from the American government. And this kind of manoeuvre is something that many governments around the world would be happy to try their hand at if given the opportunity. All governments would be prepared to bend the rules a bit if they think they can improve the prospects of their own citizens. That’s just a fact of life. But for me, the clear elephant in the room is the circumstance of Danny Casolaro’s death. Anyone with more than half a brain cell can see that Casolaro did not commit suicide of his own volition. The shortcomings in the investigation into his death are simply laughable. The witness statements of a separate individual with brown hair entering his room on the night of his death. The fact that one of the chief suspects provided two significantly different alibis that was then never questioned. You don’t have to be Albert Einstein to work out what’s gone on here. Over time it seems that many of the individuals involved in this debacle have slowly passed away. As a result, it’s starting to become slightly less important if the truth outs. Twenty years ago, I think the stakes were a lot higher, and that’s why some of the people involved mysteriously went missing or conveniently died. But for the remaining individuals who are still embroiled in this cover-up, the tactics have had to change. If the documentary maker somehow died on this occasion, it would just be too blatant. So we are now in a situation where they’ve had to allow this documentary to be produced, but they will instead try to undermine its credibility. And on a completely unrelated note, I’d like to draw your attention back to the suspiciously low review scores I initially mentioned.

Why we were coding trap doors in highschool computer labs, I don't know.

Nust watched the last episode. My copy of the book is still sealed/unread (ran off the whole thing at the library). Getting the book way back when was a mini conspiracy in itself. Somebody didn't want the book being read. The documentary added info from the book and at least keeps the story alive. I'm sure "they" hate that.

@@joncarlyle7260last I checked yet - Douglas Valentine has recent interviews on youtube about his "Pisces Moon" book - it's newly published and an awesome read! First-hand testimony of his personal interviews with CIA drug smugglers living in IndoChina. Douglas Valentine had written this military memoir about his dad in WWII - and somehow Douglas Valentine befriended a high level CIA officer - and thus Douglas Valentine wrote books on Operation Phoenix with the CIA hoping to clear their "conscience" so to speak. This further lead to Douglas Valentine getting this CIA drug smuggling connections.

Kind of amazing to see what passes for awesome work. I enjoyed the series, it was entertaining. That's where it ends. Awesome story, great entertainment, doesn't prove anything, doesn't solve anything, doesn't separate fact from disimformation. You can't tell me what PROMIS actually did, and while arpanet had some international connections from 1969, none of that detasil is explained. It is a wide spreading conspiracy from the murder of JFK to Chemical Weapons, to the drug trade? Connecting some disparate dots while never explaining what PROMIS actually did. Answer this, what connections did PROMIS actually make in a time of an extremely limited digital archive? It would be entirely more believeable if you answered the original question the series actually asked. The records referenced in the entire series are paper files, how exactly did early 1980's pre-internet connect those things together? Again I enjoyed the story, but that is what it is, a story.

Does anyone know what Robert Booth Nichols showed Michael Riconosciuto in Alice Springs, Australia that disgusted him so much that he wanted nothing to do with Nichols? Yes - his knowledge also of CHIPS and SWIFT in relation to global liquidity movement was also super impressive if you read the manuscript called 'The Circle' which I think this doc was partially based on. And the game as they call it is an information one, meaning there is truth in why he fell out with Nichols and I am guessing its tied to the narrative concerning location. Also Nichols seemed interested in getting folks to travel - would like to know if Pine Gap was on the itinerary. As a former 35D - that spot was a NSA spot with massive headcount - associated with info risk, curious as to what else they got up to in relation to cut outs and 'the company'. @@mattgilbert7347
