Castles, Cairns and Battlefields. We visited 3 sites that are all really close to each other and lie just outside of Inverness. First we visited the Dulloden Battlefield, site of the last fight between the Scottish rebels seeking independence from England under the leadership of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Next, we went to the ancient stone circles, tombs and pyramids at the Clava Cairns. And finally, we spent an afternoon touring the inside of Cawdor Castle as well as the gardens around the castle. All three of these stops are terrific and can be done in a day because they're all so close to each other. Thanks to Tammy, who joined us in Scotland, we have photos of the inside of the castle which is known for the Earl of Cawdor who is featured in Shakespeare's MacBeth. It is still owned and lived in by the widow and second wife of the late Earl of Cawdor, though she opens it to tourists when she isn't in residence.
