My guess is some rich person had their own personal fishing pond and decided they wanted to fish for Arapaima. Then a flood connected that pond to the rest of the ecosystem and from there it was off to the races.

The Arapima probably came from an illegal fish farm. I've caught exotic fish in the Withlacochee river in Central Florida, Placostamus (fish tank sucker fish). One was about 16 inches long. They were making a nest to spawn, and I seen them, and tossed a cast net and got'tem. They became garden fertilizer.

Plecos have been here quite a while. Probably not an illegal fish farm but more like someone buys a baby from the store for their fish tank, realizes they need a ton more room and don't really clean the glass at all so they release them into the wild. There's a ton of species of fish in our waters from that alongside fish or fish eggs escaping from legal fish farms. It's a huge thing down here, huge enough that one doesn't have to do it illegally.

Florida is way too warm to be optimal for wells catfish. They would however be happy in most of the rest of the continental US and would certainly "solve" your Asian carp problem. Unfortunately, they would have a massive impact on native fish too - and sadly, they are already in the US pet trade, which makes their colonisation of the country almost inevitable at this point.

It seems to me that there's a race to see who can release the most invasives in the southern US. Most large invasive predator fish are released simply because they get too large to house and feed, so into a river or lake they go. The thinking behind it (if you can call it thinking) is that's better to release them into the wild so they can live their best life.

My Mother once caught a three foot pike and put it in a tin washtub for the night, the next afternoon she took it down to a road camp a few miles from out house since we had no refridgeration and the thing was way too big for the four of us to eat in a hurry. It had been out of the water for around 24 hours, there had been no water in the washtub, the cook poured some water in to wet it down to scale it, and the pike started thrashing. I have no idea how long they can live out of water, but if they ever learn to walk we would have a real problem.

It got there by some fishermen who didn't want to continually go to South America to catch, and release them.

Previous aquarium pet industry guy. Unfortunately, baby arapaima are not impossible to get. I've seen dozens for sale during my career when I was doing sales calls. Fish gets too big for aquarium and rocket scientist decides dumping it in the Everglades is the best move.

Lake Ontario and Lake Erie have longnose gar and spotted gar but I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that there are no alligator gar living in the wild within 150 miles of Lake Ontario. Just fish stories

Hmm, so his guess was “the invasive alligator from 2 states over in Louisiana “ Louisiana is 3 states over and alligator gar are native to Florida. The picture they show of the 3 guys holding the Arapima must have been taken at the foothills of the Everglades Mountains. Also, did he say spessafiffity?

There is no way you caught a gator gar in lake Ontario. We do have long nosed gar here which get pretty large. An alligator gar would not survive in our cold waters

Yea this doesn't surprise me. I was an avid fish hobbiest down in Florida and I knew alot of people were starting to get arapaima down here, and I knew for an absolute fact I saw one st the surface of one of the many canals in the area and called it in the the fwc. This was probably a year before the vid was posted

Oh no you'd be surprised on how common they are in the pet trade nowadays. I could order a 5in baby right now for around $100 off of several well know aquarium sites. Also the monster fish part of the aquarium community has some less than savory people in it who use them as a flex and who also have a younger audience. These are people like catchem all fishing, barbs buzzing, and Paul cuffaro (butchered his name) who all treat their animals poorly and live in Florida. They released plenty of large invasive fish into their local canals, and when you have a young impressionable fan base of course they will try to copy them. That's why we have kids releasing their red tail catfish and black pacu that they kept in a 55 gallon tank

The Everglades is kind of like Highlander at this point. It's just full of super invasive animals that are almost impossible to get rid of. Now they're battling it out to see who comes out on top of the swamp trash state. There can be only one.
