Intuitive Eating: Anti-diet Trend Goes Viral. Should you try it? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Intuitive eating is a diet trend but it is the farthest thing from dieting. Intuitive eating focuses on a person's internal hunger cues where the person relies on their body's needs. Intuitive dieting promises to balance nutrition and desires. And it comes with health benefits like improved blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. But intuitive eating mostly offers psychological benefits. And at its core, it battles the chronic dieting culture that puts pressure on eating habits. But what are the downsides of intuitive eating? Will it lead people to give into impulses and overeat or consume junk food? Can intuitive eating aid weight-loss? Palki Sharma tells you.

As a recovering drug and food addict, I’ve learned that addiction is addiction, no matter the type. Food addiction can be harder because you need food in moderation, but it’s legal and always available. Once an addict, always an addict, but you can redirect that energy. I turned my addiction into exercise and meditation. If you’re struggling with food addiction, remember there’s a hormone called ghrelin that tells your brain to eat. You have to fight it like a war. Drink tea or water to trick it-hunger usually fades after 30 minutes. I managed it one week at a time: starting with 12 hours straight, then 8, 6, 4, and finally 2 hours between meals until I was down to one meal a day. Now I’m in the best shape of my life, physically and mentally, with the best blood work I’ve ever had.

Palki, why don't u do a story on Ekadashi fasting practices in Bharat? It's such a fantastic, once in 15 days fasting equal to no other fasting/ dieting in the world. It not only gives health but elevates us spiritually too.

That's a great idea! I'm American and I would like to know how to fast for Ekadashi. Like when your last meal should be, when you should start eating again, what you should eat for your last and breaking fast meals, what is acceptable to consume during the fast, etc.

@@mgregory22people who fast on ekadashi usually are on liquids only, some people include liquids with fruits and nuts. And there are people who are npo(nil per oral),that is nothing goes into the system for 24 hours. Our ancestors somehow knew the importance of detox every 15 days and also found a way to spiritually elevate themselves. It's still practised in India, by certain communities. Few people who can't fast like children, elderly and pregnant/ breastfeeding women eat light tiffins and avoid rice which is our staple diet ,atleast here in south India.

@@mgregory22 hi, according to traditional Indian texts and shastras, ekadashi is the 11th day of every moon cycle. And every 15th day would be full moon or new moon. Right.... So , on every 11th day, we do a nirjala upavaasa. That means no water also. No food, no consumption of any kind of item for the stomach. It starts like this - 1. On the previous night I.e. 10th day night, we don't eat heavy food, just some fruits or something very light. Do a sankalpa such that your fast vrata happens successfully and does not get any obstacles. Pray to God that he gives u the mental strength to do the vrata without vighnas. 2. Next entire day we fast. No food. No water. 3. Then, on the dwadashi day, 12th morning, we pray to God , offer the upavaasa and all the karma to God, pray to him for spiritual growth and then have full meals. Like heavy meals that u wat in the afternoon. Upavaasa means "living close to". In this context, it means living close to God. So during this time of upavaaasa we distract our mind from eating and focus on studying shastras and elevating our Jnana needed for spiritual growth.

@@mgregory22 hi, in hindu shastras, ekadashi means the 11th day of the moon cycle. So the 15th day would be a full moon or new moon. We do ekadashi upavaasa on every 11th day of the moon cycle so it would be twice in a month. Upavaasa means "living close to". In this context it means living close to Sri Krishna. Food is one of the easiest temptations for humans and causes various thought Processes. So, during this upavaasa we quit food and focus on studying shastras, listening to upanyaasas, reciting stotras for God and spending the entire time on devotion. It starts with-- 1. On the 10th day night, I.e. Dashami day, we eat very light and not heavy meals. Do a sankalpa to God praying that let this upavaasa happen without any vighna I.e. no obstacles like temptation, hunger, anger, binging etc. 2. Next entire day, we do fasting , no food, no water, just prayers and regular work if any. 3. On the 12th day, dwadashi day morning after sun rise, we have full meals , heavy meals. Then we do a samarpana to God offering this devotion, focus and control over mind and body ... praying for greater spiritual growth. This traditional hindu way of fasting gives great health is just the bare minimum. If u do it with devotion and knowledge of the texts, Sri Krishna will give moksha too. Hope you begin your spiritual journey soon. Best of luck.

Tbh Palki, I have been doing this since past four years. Its true that our body does know what we need, how much to eat, how many times. But this requires one to be aware of the cues their body is giving them, and the more you listen to your body the easier it becomes, and at some point it is no longer a struggle to identify your intuition rather it becomes a natural part of your life

In the 70”s Lynn Donovan, a dancer, introduced the Anti-Diet. She explained with logic and clarity how to sit quietly and Listen to the emotional aspect of your desire. Do you need comfort food? Do you need finger food? Food to crunch? Food to fight the grey skies and cold winds? She explained you can eat anything you wish as long as it aligns with your emotional state. Eat exactly what you want , then stop. Food is a great deal more than fuel. This video gives typical sloppy verbiage and no insight into how this works . Learning to connect to your feelings about food, sex, relationships, religion, etc is a good thing. This video is another media experience which whets your appetite for new thinking but delivers nothing concrete or useful.

I agree with this trend and pleasantly surprised that such a thing exists in this polarised world where each nation tries to promote its own food. Even in India, the food of the South is kept out of the limelight until advent of social media and migration of intelligent men and women of South to US and other so-called civilised economically developed countries where they excel. Thanks to them the South Indian food is getting some if not a liittle exposure to the world. This trend is a welcome change - hope it lasts. We are glad for it.

why can't people just eat normally without labelling the practice?? First world countries have too much money and luxuries so they find ways of making their lives harder. I'm from a third world country, and you'll never hear an average person having eating disorders, as they don't have access to too much food. Disorders like anorexia and bulimia are for rich people around here. Same with these extreme diets like keto

Fortunately I discovered glucose goddess, Biochemist Jessie Inchauspe, she is such a blessing, now realizing I take food not because of its taste but because of the benefit it gives my body, understanding that food is medicine, the saying “eat your food like medicine the time you get sick you’ll eat medicine as your food” we just need to understand the nutrients the body needs and feed it, enjoy the feeling of being energized and healthy, cause we are what we eat.
