Sleep Will Not Fix Your Fatigue. Here's Why. | Vantage with Palki Sharma
How often do you feel tired? Many try to fix their fatigue by getting more sleep. But despite the shut eye our bodies seem to have shut down. Research says sleep and rest are not the same thing. There are five different types of fatigue, including physical, mental, emotional, social, and sensory. We live in a culture of immediate responsiveness so we are chronically tired. Rest is vital for physical and mental health. So what can we do to achieve it? Palki Sharma tells you.

Absolutlly correct. Stress can keep you tired even if you sleep 8 hours. I know, When things are going good I'm not tired at all, but when things out of my control go bad I can't hardly walk across the room without feeling like I was run over by a truck.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety, smoking, and illicit pills addiction. Imagine carving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not, in a couple of years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He's 59 & has many mental health issues plus probably CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD knows if it is common for an obsession with violence.

In my humble opinion, the best possible solution (to a certain extent) to combat the fatigue factor of any sort is to develop a relentless passion for something beneficial like a lifetime hobby ex. drawing, painting, gardening and to name a few..... When you are passionate about something and keep pursuing that you will have a lot of positive energy both mentally and physically since all your focus is on your passion. More often than not, the fatigue factor creeps in when our mind is dumped with full of negativity. More importantly. we live in an era of which 90% of the population is driven by social media platforms for at least 75% of our non-sleeping hours. In that case, it is paramount to focus only on positive aspects of life on Social media. Hope you all with me on the above, folks!!

Tiredness that are not due to exercise is mostly due to brain. If you keep doing what you don’t like, you get exhausted a lot. Brain consumes the most energy, you are at your best when you do things that your brains like, mostly things that give you good emotions like love, kindness, courtesy, happiness etc. Contrary bad emotions drains your brain like hate, fear, competitiveness, anger, feeling entitled, jealous, envy etc etc. interestingly more the amount of water you consume, more good foods (Satvic foods) that you eat will push your brain towards positive emotions. Alcohol will have a negative effect to your emotions no matter the amount. It is a depressant to your brain, mostly depressing the ability to feel positive emotions. Also, consuming too much food will affect your brain. Eat less and feel better. Above all,the very real cause is less consciousness and not being alert. Not being alert to bad emotions and its reasons (like bad food habits, alcohol habits, doing things that make you feel shame later on like not forgiving someone etc) is the biggest cause that you feel tired, because you don’t realize you can change your life, if you really wanted to and you have 100% control over your life. Remember we all live inside our brains, not in big cities or big houses or working in big offices. The moment you realize this, you will know how to keep the place (brain) you live better for your betterment. Summary: When you do things that you like and gives you positive emotions, you don’t require rest. That’s why our PM can work for long hours daily and Sadhguru can work for long hours daily, a housewife that works for long hours daily out of the love for their family, will need very little rest.

Agree to most of it. Except for the statement that most of this hard work is because we are (or trying to be) high achievers. I think work has lost its direction on a basic few parameters - some being- (1) Does our job solve real world issues? Do we even know that? Are we burning out for Must haves or nice to haves or just whimsies I would be worried if most of us are on must haves yet the state of affairs. (2) Tangible vs Virtual gains I suspect much of the work is unsorted on these basic parameters; references to support is market of tangible products that are in so much (useless)bulk that it’s taking aisle space, financial products and regulations and economy that couldn’t seem to fix worsening country debt, (most) companies like Infosys who probably think 70 hr work week is for country and seems to me then that the debt so far was lack of human work not excess of unplanned work 😨 And the biggest of all red flags; the “results” of our hard labor- climate impact and deteriorating planet and human health 💆‍♀️

Tell that to our neighbors. Even tho it's trendy to be concerned about one's own sleep, we haven't translated this newfound awareness into laws, policies, or even common culture. People still seem clueless about the need to protect *each other's* sleep by cutting back on noise. Remember that a lot of "others" are growing your food, teaching your children, and policing your neighborhood. Don't be surprised at the incompetence of the workers around you when you don't quiet down enough for them to sleep properly.

I totally agree with this research information. I was tired, non stop running around, working yet when I had a bit of free time, I used to socialise because of social pressure of at home or going out to socialise; crowd, so much noise. never felt rested always tired and irritated. But now, I don't care about the social pressures of meeting friends, going out. I stay at home away from so much noise and people. Even if I don't sleep but just having me time by myself clears my mind and also recover my body.

More rest or less rest? Which will improve our vitality depends on where our recent lifestyle lies on the spectrum, and how we have been feeling. Generally, less than 6 hours of sleep leads to increased distractibility, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, worry and increased tension. Our outlook is shifted to the negative, and nothing in our world feels right. At the extreme end, some folks may experience panic attacks or thoughts of suicide. Paradoxically, those with "bipolar" tendencies, may respond to sleep deficit with increased energy and lack of awareness (denial) of the stress and impairment they are experiencing (and spreading to those around them). Either way, insufficient sleep can make it hard to relax and shut off our thoughts at night, perpetuating and sometimes deepening the lack of rest. On the other side of the spectrum, excessive sleep (above 9 hours per day) usually leads to feeling emotionally blunted, heavy, sluggish, limp, and unmotivated. We may not worry so much as not care, and this apathy and lack of energy can lead us to lying down, doing nothing, and perhaps sleeping even more. Since both extremes will lead to poor physical and mental health, the answer isn't a simplistic "sleep more" or "sleep less". There is nothing surprising about this. We all know that starving people will be heathier if they eat more, and obese persons if they eat less. Unfortunately, many studies about sleep don't account for both extremes, and neither does Palki in her muddled story. So back to the first question, how much sleep should a person get? Most people seem healthiest with 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day, but there is much individual variation. Even 20 minutes more or less can have measurable impacts. My advice is to pay regular attention to how much sleep we get over time, and note the sleep duration when we have a particularly "good week" in terms of health and function. This will be a strong indication of our particular sleep number - our target. Then going forward, we can bump this up for a few days if we have been feeling tense and dyregulated, and drop it down for a few days if we have been feel flat, heavy and blunted. If this approach works for you, pass it on to others. Overall, it helps to realise that vitality and resilience depend on having the right amount of stress, so-called Eustress. One reflection of this is the arousal-performance curve (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerkes%E2%80%93Dodson_law), which shows we do best with moderate levels of anxiety, stress and arousal. There is an analogy where sound is unpleasant when the strings of a musical instrument are overly tight or slack, but the sound is pleasing with the proper level of tension. May we all keep this in mind as we strive to make beautiful music with our most miraculous instruments, our precious bodies and brains!

Constant fatigue can also be a sign of a medical condition. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and now use a CPAP machine. It has solved a lot of the medical issues I had and I now no longer feel so tired all day.

Yup sleep do not fix my feeling of fatigue. I feel done with my fulltime job. I engage myself doing hobbies i love like playng guitar or playing video games or discussions with my startup employees and partners, i feel refreshed ready for the next day. This cycle i am following since 2020. Dont have time to enjoy the money i make. Rather my brain feels safisfied helping my family/friends with my money.

as you get older your body aches because your muscles are not anymore elastic. Sometimes you lay down and you wake up in the middle of the night with sore shoulder, neck and back. Try stretching while in hot shower. Stretch the part that aches. It will improve your sleep significantly.

I start dimming lights / sounds and stop talking after 9 pm. I walk 5k-6k steps per day, pushing it to reach 10k this quarter. I do not utter a word about work outside work hours. Monthly and weekly to-do list (made in advance) keeps me on the top of things. I am 40+ and have refused to have too much on my agenda. I sleep well and wake up refreshed.
