Introduction to Wire EDM
Ғылым және технология
Wire EDM has revolutionized machining. Things that were once impossible to machine are now being done with wire EDM. With wire EDM we can cut any conceivable shape up to 45 degrees taper with accuracies of +/-.0001".
Any electrically conductive material can be machined with EDM, even tungsten carbide. An added benefit of wire EDM is that exotic alloys can be machined just as easily as mild steel. Since the wire electrode never comes into contact with the metal, wire EDM is a stress-free machining process.
Sommer, president of the largest EDM job shop in North America, has co-authored with his son Steve, a mechanical engineer, Complete EDM Handbook. The handbook is free at their website.

I'm sorry, you created a college-grade textbook and you made it available for FREE?? That is fantastic!
I'm beginning my first year apprenticeship and will be mostly using these machines. Thank you so much for the free textbook, what an incredible resource.
Wonderful series of highly valued information. Thank you Mr. Sommers for your brilliant contributions. Also, a big thumbs up to all of our remaining American innovators and producers!
Thank you for invaluable information. And I can't comprehend how someone can dislike this.
May God bless you with more wealth and happiness Sir for your free text book contribution.
Super impressive! Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge
He's a great teacher and a nice guy.
wish I was 40 years younger---edm is incredible---love it. (still work the cnc mills and such)
Greetings from Spain!! thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and put all this free information. I'm reading your book for two reasons: first one, to learn about this technology, I'm working now with 3D printers, but I want to learn about many different manufacturing process and the second one is to improve my english and learn technical vocabulary. So thank you so much for the videos and to sharing your book
Can you imagine where we would " not " be without men like this in our country ???? Forget about stupid politicians and politics and endless sports . Without knowledge like this you can't stay a top shelf player on the globe . And always be prepared in case hostilities break out on the earth again . Our focus should always be moving forward . Thank you for the video 👍
Thank you Mr. Sommers for sharing your valuable knowledge, I do appreciate it very much. From Mexico.
Thank you ! what a beautiful demonstration!
Carl is awesome! I love learning from experts like this! Great teaching style! And your book is such an awesome gift to the world! 👍
Thanks a lot to this man for the beautiful and precise explanation.
Im a machinist . And im operate EDM wire cut in 2year it is incredible, and verry critical machin for many h
Thanks for putting this up Carl. I'll almost certainly never run a wire EDM, but it's good to see how it's done.
Thank you for the video, what a marvelous way of metal fabricating. Baden Smith,Tasmania. Australia.
Great video, and well written book. I have an interview at an EDM manufacturer next week, and this information is helping me prepare.
Very impressive.I didn't know such a thing is possible. Thanks for showing.
Thanks from South Africa.
Thanks Carl. Good, informative and well presented.
Very well explained. Thank you.
wow that is really cool. i wish i could get into this field.
Wow thanks Carl !
thank you for making this information free.
Learning about this now ....looking forward too continuing my career
Thanks a lot. British and American educational videos are just best. Happy New Year Sir.
sir great video... thanks for sharing this with us... very useful for mechanical engineers......
You are great sir !! Your initiative for skill development in Unskilled ,Unemployed youth is excellent!! please make a complete video on progressive tool design if possible!!
Thanks for an informative video
have to admire u, u are best..!
Amazing how so much accuracy can be maintained using a spark.
Very informative, thank you
thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
stunning!!!!...
i love you guys !!!! thank you
thanks for all information
great video
Extremely interesting thank you
This guy's knowledge is impressive
what a nice guy. thankyou for the information
Thank you
Amazing.:)
Great Sir, this machine is very use full for mechanical works
hello, very interesting, I'm working with similar machines,in fact I program and operate two diferent EDM and others CNC machines, I live in Mexico
They got 4 at Work, they are amazing to watch cutting...
wohhh very interesting video
good stuff
On a fantastic Mitsubishi EDM machine!👍👍👍👍😎
Awesome
Nice broooooooo
Interesting.
Houston, Texas based!
edm, easy to run, but still super tight tolerances
WOW
thanksممنون
Looking up new knife steel (tool steels) brought me here...interesting stuff.
How does this perform to todays Laser cutting technology?
@kkknotcool

lasers always cut on an unavoidable taper in the top.

Co2 and Fiber laser are suitable for thickness up to 30mm in steel, stainlessteel and aluminium. what we see in the video is not going to happen with laser technology.

A laser can cut in a good day with in .005" an edm can hold day in and day out .0002" and with the knowledge can hold .00005" a wire edm is the most accurate machine in a shop.
This guy teaches you a lot of things, and moreover, he spent his time to write a comprehensive book that he gives you for free... I bet those 27 people here are giving a lot of up votes to funny videos with cats and dogs, but only a moron could vote this video down...
Why can't our university professors articulate concepts like this guy? No wander so many people are saying that the college degree is dead, and the industry which specializes in wasting 4 to 6 years of human life while instilling false ideas of superiority into lazy entitled millennials is dying. You can just listen to, and learn from people like this, who have actually been successful.
great video
