Introduction to Pen & Ink Techniques

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pen & Ink is the staple of Botanical and Natural Science Illustration as it is the least expensive technique for reproduction. Clarity and simplicity of the black ink on paper requires a steady hand and refined skill. In this video I demonstrate the tools used in Pen & Ink. I demonstrate the beginning strokes for using the crow quill pen to create line work and the rapidiograph pen to create stipple. I hope that you will consider sharing this video with anyone who might be interested in the art of Pen & Ink. If you have any questions or comments please leave them below. Great video, though I'm a Spencerian student rather than an illustrator. From my experience, I highly recommend not using a lighter to prep nibs for use. Reduces their resilience to flexing, and it does a poor job of removing the residue. What you need is some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), give it a few dips and wipe gently with a paper towel. Allows the ink to coat the nib much better, prevents hard starts and doesn't alter the metal's springiness. Just throwing that out there!

    Loved the video it is obvious to me that you really know the proper techniques for quill inking. Got to say that the use of the sponge and shamy (?) are certainly things I'll be using in the future. On another matter; is a bit hard to work unidirectionally (outwards) with the quills or nibs but the results are smoother as shown in your video. Again, love your video.

    Michael Wood An alternative to the sponge is to just use a mug, one which is wide and short rather than narrow and tall (much harder to knock over). You can also purchase small plastic drawer organizers from Bed Bath and Beyond which are about the base area of a large soap dish, but with more height. I like to sit my ink in one of these. Impossible to knock over, and if you knock the ink bottle over it just spills into the dish rather than on the desk.

    Just FYI to the author and viewers that first nib in the "bounce test" is sprung. No nib should ever look like that with the tines apart when no pressure is applied. They will always be together and apart only when flexed unless permanently damaged - aka "sprung". Time to replace that one and be careful with applying too much pressure

    Sprung nibs have a space and place in the work tray of illustrators in any case she used the "the sprung" to illustrate how quills yield to pressure. Is clearly visible that the drawings where made with a pristine quill.

    Thanks for vid! I have a problem, in my art I draw with pencil and then ink. Sometimes after lots of erasing and redrawing the pen just wouldn’t write, as if a grease emulsion had formed onto the paper (despite my posing my palm only on protective sheet, not directly on drawing). How to avoid this? When we invent the figures frequent erasing is mandatory when comparing options. Thanks!

    Thanks Mindy. The second student drawing was very helpful to me because I have trouble translating rolling or wrinkled surfaces. I typically use hatch lines or shade with a brush, but stippling has always daunted me because of the time, focus, and concentration required to capture the feature. After seeing the excellent result by your student, I plan to study botanical art examples for ideas and techniques. Thanks for that. I do have one question though, can you mix hatch and stipple? It seems from the student sample that it is not, and could be disruptive to the drawing. Thoughts? Thanks again. Excellent demonstration.

    I've been trying to do research on nibs to see what I'll be getting into and most of the info I've seen has been very spread out. This video has been the most informative one I've seen yet. Thank you so much for making it! I do have one question though about how messy nib drawing can be -if you don't mind taking the time. I'm a visual development student living with 2 other artists and I prefer to do my inking by hand rather than digitally. My drawing table I actually set up on our kitchen table witch me and one of the other artists converted into our desk/workstation. I did see your sponge technique but I'm still worried about getting ink on our wood table -we still use it for eating on special occasions. How messy is this medium and is it easy to clean? Would you recommend someone to wait until they have a proper work station? (Ughh, I can't wait to get a proper studio)

  • @WitchettyMan

    My greatest problem using dip pens is getting the ink to flow. Every single time I try to draw, the ink stops and I end up scratching the paper, and this is before it dries out. I end up having to drag the nib over and over until it finally starts flowing again, but soon the same thing happens. This happens even when I'm drawing simple lines (like you did in this video) for practice, so imagine the pain it is to draw shapes with them. Even when I augment the pressure and I clearly see the tips opening, the ink is still not flowing like I want to. I have almost no control over it. What do you think it's the cause of this? Could it be the quality of the nib?

  • @WitchettyMan

    @WitchettyMan

    7 жыл бұрын

    I see. Getting a consistent long line that looks like it was made with a single stroke is still something I'm working towards. But it looks fine when I'm doing something small just for practice though. But the tip you gave about starting a little before the tip of where you stopped was of great help, it did help to improve the consistency. And my nibs are all from different brands, and every single one of these appear to use their own way of categorizing them. That's what's so frustrating, you have to count on luck and gut calls to find what you want. And does it happen frequently to you that, when trying to get the flow back, you overink? And you end up having a line way thicker than what you were originally doing, or worse, ink feathering? In these cases you cover the mistakes with white ink, right?

    Does this Denril paper comes in the A4 size? The only kind of paper I use is the regular paper you use for printing, called "Chamex", that's its produced by the International Paper branch in Brazil, have you heard of it? What kind of paper i should I use, and what are the features that I should look out for when choosing paper for inking? Is the the thickness that prevents feathering? As for the ink, how do I know if it's thin enough?

  • @WitchettyMan

    @WitchettyMan

    7 жыл бұрын

    Mindy Lighthipe Hello Mindy, it's been a while since we talked about this, but I thought I should tell you: turns out the problem was the ink. It was só thick that It wouldn't flow through the nib, even after adding acetona. I bought one from another brand and problem was solved, now I've been able to draw with them freely. No, just one I think I noticed: I bought a very think nib that is anexo equivalent to the Maru Pen. Not exactly the same, but meant for very thin strokes, nonetheless. But anyway, this particular nib doesn't flow the ink very well when I do a long stroke. There is one that I can use to make constant long Strokes through the paper with no problem, but I can't do the same with the thin nib. Is this normal?
