Introduction | Devlog #1 | Road to Vostok

Ойындар

Road to Vostok is a hardcore single-player survival game set in a post-apocalyptic border zone between Finland and Russia.
This devlog is a behind-the-scenes documentary series for showcasing the current progress and features of the game. I also share some game development tips & tricks that I have learned through these years of making video games.

Just some thoughts from someone who's been playing hardcore survival games for over a decade Make sure to pay extra attention to weapon/environmental blocking, nothing more frustrating than dying because your guy pulled his arm up/down when he didn't need to. Having a system that pushes the gun left/right/back as well as up/down is a lot better than a system that just says gun up, gun down The A.I. demonstrated from top-down looks very, well, artificial, having the bot actually scan his angles/corners before just aimlessly going all the way through a room would look way more human Visuals are important, not for how the game looks, but how well you can see/identify threats, lighting/fog needs careful attention for a survival game

One thing I’ve always loved about stalker was it’s ai. It felt very dynamic and made me think they weren’t just there for me to shoot at. It was like an actual “living” world which is a first for me despite the term being thrown around all the time with disappointing AAA games. I hope we get some semblance of that.

Transparency as a game developer is to me a huge selling point, it shows not only that you are commited, it shows that you are truly passionate about your project. And to me, that is the most important aspect. You want to create something great that others can experience, not just churn out another cookie cutter game everyone will forget after a few weeks. Just please please add a free look from the shoulders. The ability to have your weapon at high-readiness at front whilst having a quick scan of your immedaite surroundings would be so important. I believe with consistent work there's no reason this game to not blow up. I liked your point about PBR, not many solo developers or even indie studios can afford the money and the time for having full PBR world but at same time their interest is realism, the artstyle approach you picked is both convenient and immersive, i've always loved such games with similar artstyle there's just something really immersive.

The only thing I don't understand is the omission of roughness maps. AO / Metallic / Normal... alright. Even though you can easily generate _passable_ normals from a diffuse map. But roughness maps? I mean, how is the floor going to look when the sun hits it? I can't imagine that this is going to look any good. Especially during transitional daytimes.

You know the dude's a competent developer when he has a simple ramp collision for the stairs instead of each step having separate collision which makes for a very erratic experience when going up or down stairs. My only complaint is the weapon detail, they look far too pristine and it just ends up looking out of place. But I'm sure all of this will improve over time. Wish you a lot of luck and fortune with this project, fellow neighbour!

I thought the same thing, on both points. But I doubt gun models are his, or at least not final. Could be public models just as a place holder. He was just showing the gun mechanics at the time after all. Which in video games, sorta dont really require a gun model haha.

This looks already amazing and i cannot wait to play it! A couple of things i could suggest: - More depth on enemies: What are we going to fight with? Are there any monsters/anomalies (Stalker style) or are we gonna fight just bandits (EFT style)? I understand this is in an early stage, so maybe this will be explored deeper in the future. - IA behavior: Stalker does a great thing about the behavior of the enemies, but there are some things that can be improved. The IA doesn't always have to chase you without wondering what else might be there in the room. Adding the feature of enemies leaning over a corner/door in a more tactical way, scanning the room before rushing into it, taking other paths rather than follow the exact same route you did while escaping can surely improve the feeling of realism. Is really awesome seeing how stalker's enemies take a different path than expected and show up in your face. Love the project, beeing a big fan of the Stalker franchise and realistics FPS games, this makes me very interested in seeing how it goes. By the way, i deeply appreciate the fact that only the scope is zoomed in while ADS, it's something that not a lot of games do and adds a lot of realism.

I think with behaviour, the (easier) enemies early game are bumbling buffoons who will chase you directly with minimal thought -- easier kills right? But as time goes on they get harder (alteration in behaviour to player's playstyle might be too optimistic), scanning rooms and being more tactical like you said. I think it would be realistic and representative of how the strong survive (smarter, more tactical enemies are the ones who live longer compared to the ones with half a brain cell) and would make early game areas still challenging as the player progresses, making the game novel regardless of the hours put in. Perhaps those in the Vostok area start out with the tactical behaviour and become more hardcore progressively to the point of utilizing basic military tactics (considering the dev's military background). But that's just my two cents, I think this project will be epic and novel regardless.

@@lonkidonki2684 Yeah, I did not thought too much about it but im pretty sure what you're saying is a better way to approach the relation between IA Difficulty - Map Level. It makes sense that the harder the environment in which a NPC/Player develops, the more experience it will require.

Wow this looks amazing! The only thing I can see that's holding this development back in the long run is co-op gameplay. I really appreciate how much more programming and network code that has to be written to acheive this mammoth additional implientation, but I truly feel this addition will open your game up to a massive audience that needs to be tapped in to. Not just financially but in popularity as an ongoing trend in gaming now and into the future. Less battle royal garbage and more personalised experiences with close friends in future. This being such a high risk reward experience, with having a team mate surviving the fight where they can loot your body (in Vostok) and return to the shelter with your load out would be a total audience game changer! The need for teamwork/squad based gameplay is extremely important in teaching today's kids (tomorrows gamers) the importance of team work and how important it is to rely on each other for survival. That doesn't exist in current gaming or in the world anymore right? This game could set a new standard in gaming with this (although highly complex and time consuming) addition to the overall experience for younger gamers is key to futre success. All the while demonstrating the real need to work with others to acheive ultimate success is really important when looking at future releases. All the while keeping future consumers in mind. Franchises succeed on forward thinking. This is also heavily lacking in today's game development as well. A relatively small addition (big picture thinking) can change the outcome for everyone involved in such a meaningful way from the date of release and until the next releases you put out in future. Anyway that's just my perspective. I can only ever dream of having your skill set and tool box of knowledge. You have my respect and admiration from today onwards. I'll be following your development closely as I myself will most certainly be purchasing either way! Kind regards, CTT

I like the sentiment, but we also have to be realistic. First and foremost, the gameplay and story should be the forefront of this. A co-op mode is definitely a good addition, but not something I'd personally focus on right away without having all the first person player-oriented details in stone first. It's nice to have ambitions about what you see your project solve for other people, but realistically it's probably not going to be as revolutionary as you set it up to be-even less so if you set a goal like that, as you setup yourself for high expectations. The important thing is to make a game that _you_ want to play with the quality and care that you expect from other games. Everything around it are usually side-effects from the decisions and direction that you go with it.

@@dealloc oh I totally agree with you 100%, I just feel the addition even at a later date after final polish and release would be a huge benifit to the game/francises future as well. You're right though get this part right then deal with the implications of co-op afterwards. It's just a market trend and he'd be remised to not include multiplayer at any stage or what I was implying. But yes get this right then expand at a later date after release is also an excellent idea as well! Thank you for your input is was very applicable to the conversation 👍
