    She did lots of episodes of her show with problem dogs like that. She always managed to help them and their owners. Only in one show do I recall that she recommended a dog be rehomed because he just could not get along with the other dogs in the house.

    I think the point of this video is to show how a greeting ought to look rather than to address the issue with socialising an unstable dog. Fortunately there are plenty of other videos by great dog trainers on how to socialize an antisocial dog.

    I have introduced many dogs together. Most times I start with the dogs walking together moving in the same direction, never nose to nose. This I find works better with strong minded dominant dogs. Two strong dominant dogs can get into trouble face to face. When their energy level drops and they seem to pay attention to their surroundings more then each other, they can slowly come together thru the walk. If you know and can read the energy level of the dog, it is easy to monitor them if one gets nervous or starts to act up. usually by now they are pretty settled. Most times introducing face to face with two dominant dogs will produce a fight especially when the owners are trying to hold them back and pulling on their leashes to keep them apart.

    good video. i just want to say that in my experience (i have a large dog) i notice whenever someone picks their small dog up mid introduction it always creates a lot of tension between both dogs that doesn't ever seem to be there when they're aloud to interact normally. so i think u should avoid picking ur small dog up and holding it over the others.

  • @animalobsessed1

    Then maybe you should remove your big dog from the situation when the other owner picks up their dog, as that's clearly a sign that they're trying to keep the dogs apart. Personally, my small dog will stay calm for a few seconds, but will begin to feel uneasy and eventually bite if the interaction is allowed to go on for longer. If you don't know the small dog you are greeting, it's best to trust the owner's judgement, since they know their dogs best.

    If the dogs are "risky" to put together, DON'T. Teach the dogs calming behaviors and do gradual introductions. Only allow access if both dogs are showing loose, relaxed body language. If either dog is tense, or stares hard, they are not suited to greet at that time. Try parallel walking, instead, with plenty of reinforcement for the dog re-directing attention from the other dog back to the handler.

    I would love to always let my dog go to other dogs, because I know, even though he barks, he just does so because he can't get to the dog. Once he can get to the other dog, he's very social. But not everyone wants other dogsto come to their dog, so it's hard to judge whether another dog's owner will react wrong, when I want to let my dog go over to theirs.

    To me it seems like she has taken the easy option of doing this with two small pretty friendly dogs so not much chance of anything going wrong. As someone else said, let her do another bid with a husky or rottweiler and then show us what to do if the dogs are a little more risky to put together. This video really has not told me anything I don't already know. Please make another one with larger dogs which might not be as sociable as these two. Thanks

    debbie peter Yes! My dog was 9 months old and untrained, unsocialized, and previously abused when I got her. Now she is a year and 3 months old. She's a huge 28'' at the withers GSD x Border Collie who listens well and responds almost immediately, but when it comes to socialization, she's always had a really hard time (and we go to the dog park once a week, the pet store twice a week, the vet's office once a month, feed store, friend's houses, the play park). She's got that super-protectiveness of the GSD and that lack of early, positive socialization, so she is rough and wary and growls and barks for a few minutes before settling down. Using two well-socialized TOY DOGS who have happy, preppy owners who aren't terrified to heck when they see your dog, is a GREAT real world example.... not.

    If you say your dog is difficult with other dogs, why are you putting it in a dog park or "play park" (whatever that may be) situation? People who bring their unsafe dogs to such places are the reason many dog trainers advise against taking dogs there. If you want to socialize a dog to other dogs, you need to do so in a controlled environment, not at a dog park that has lots of clueless idiots running around.

    debbie peter -The principles apply irrespective of dog size, however, small dogs can be fantastically aggressive and no one in their right mind would except certain breeds to EVER want to mix with other dogs. VS is explaining how to deal with situations which take the size/breed of dog into account. You have to use common sense. Socialization isn't always gonna be possible. If you already know all of this then the video is of little use to you, but you are not everyone else.

  • @nachochitiu6953

    @nachochitiu6953

    That would be my Jack Russell :). Start with walking them together, certainly until their initial energy is used up, sometimes until they are tired. Remain the dominant pack leader and intervene without fear when necessary. Look for Caesar Milan's video on this topic, it is much better and shows deeper understanding of dogs' mind.

  • @animalobsessed1

    @animalobsessed1

    7 жыл бұрын

    Start with walking them at a safe distance from each other, one where they can see each other but not feel threatened by the presence of another dog. Don't try to trick your dog into thinking you're a dog or a pack leader, as your dog is smart enough to tell the difference. Slowly let the dogs edge closer to each other at their own pace. Never force them to decrease the distance more than they feel comfortable with. If one of the dogs starts getting tense, that's a sign that you got too close, so just increase the distance again. With time, the dog will learn "Hey, having this dog be 100 meters away from me is actually fine, so what about 99 meters? Oh, that's also fine. How about 98 meters, 50 meters, 20 meters, 1 meter, etc" You don't need to make your dog feel the need for aggression in order to fix aggression. If your dog is only "fairly aggressive" and not "very aggressive", you can expect to have them safely walking side by side within 2-3 hours. If they are more aggressive, you may need to work on this over the course of several days.

    +Lisa Stone I'd say if your dog is hyper, tire your dog like a huge long run or a swim. Your dog gets tired and be too tired to be hyped. Then you can try to have a walk on a place your dog dont live (so that no one can claim as alpha) and meet other dog. I'm not profesional dog handler but I've learnt so much about this.

  • @Tinohadji

    Dan gerous Because you have no idea what you are talking about... And neither does she... 1)You get competition heel's where the dog is constantly engaged and looking at you ready for next command. 2)You have walk heels where the dogs leans on your leg... So that bikers and other walkers on the pathway dont get intimidated, or your dog is not in their way... 3)Then there is loose lease walking where the dog is more chilled... but not pulling on leash.. Now try do number 2 with a Chihuahua for example... Without stepping on it.. and maybe injuring the poor dog... A Chihuahua's strength is so little that you actually dont want a loose leash... so much... so it does not get tangled... In fact a retractable lead might be better. So no... good leash walking is not the same with each and every dog. It's not even that necessary with a Chihuahua, because you can control where the dogs go with two fingers.

    Now why the heck would the dog's size matter? That little one Victoria has (Jasmine?) seems dominant. Amy's first dog is submissive whilst the big one doesn't give a shit about Jasmine because it's obviously dominant and shows Jasmine early to not bother him and that way they're cool with eachother. Jasmine respects and gives him space. Most likely has nothing to do with James size. I've coma across many strongly dominant small dogs myself, where the big dog is the follower.

    she doesn't do that. that's what I found on her page: Do you really need to be the 'Pack Leader' to your dogs? First of all, that is impossible, since your dogs know perfectly well that you are not, in fact, a dog. But even if you were, the whole concept of 'pack leadership' in domestic dogs as it is commonly understood has long been dismissed by trainers, veterinarians, veterinary behaviorists and modern behavioral science. Do we need to provide leadership and guidance for our dogs? Of course. Advertisement Do we need to force them to be 'submissive' to us and view us as a 'dominant' figure in their lives to suppress their supposed natural instinct to take over our relationships, our households and our world? No.

    This is a terrible way to introduce dogs. This is dangerous not only for the dog but for the owners too. If one of the dogs feels threatened by the other coming close to its owner or feels it’s personal space is being invaded, it could growl or even attack which could result in a fight. Having the dogs on Leads is important when introducing dogs together but by letting another dog invade another’s space is not the correct way at all!
