Ultimate RESCUE DOG Checklist | Dog MUST-HAVES

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I hope that this is helpful to you in your dog adoption journey! I have had 3 rescue dogs myself, trained many rescue clients, and worked with rescue dogs at the shelter. Everything on this list draws from that experience. This is a FULL list of everything that you will need for your rescue dog, so some of these things might seem very obvious, but I wanted this list to be accessible to everyone, regardless of your previous experience with dogs.

    I tried giving my dog a treat ball. She quickly figured out that if she picks it up and slams it down as hard as she possibly can, as many times as she can, the treats don’t come out - but mummy gives her attention and that’s better than food lol

    Thanks for posting this, I agree with it and have had a rescue now for 3.5 weeks. I would also add, the anti-fungal, anti-bacterial soap for their itchy and stressed skin after being in a shelter, or having been living off scraps. I think at the beginning of this video, it's good to give a cost estimate for people considering getting a rescue dog to give them a reality check on the several hundreds of dollars required in supplies, house prep and vet checks! Also have someone home constantly those first few weeks to help de-compress the animal!

    Just recieved my rescue dog from the Houston area on Monday. What a sweet dog - an abandoned stray running in a pack. Not my first rescue, so I can concur with the list of things you will need, and add patiences and tolerance for an adjustment period. All my dogs in 45+ years have been shelter or rescue dogs, and they all have been great. Our first was a border collie mix. She was fantastic, and when we had children, she was soooo good with them and helped mind them for us.

    Great video. Many people adopt dogs they are cute or because they feel sorry for the dog. Many adopted dogs are returned because of owner lifestyle - dog mismatch. Get a dog that matches your energy level. If you are unwilling (or unable) to exercise a dog twice a day, a high energy dog is not for.

  • @mobstercrow7515

    They have multiple websites you can use to check the ingredients of your dog food. A lot of food is grain free which is NOT recommended at all. Dogs need grain in their diet and they have found that grain free diets can cause more harm than good. Most people that have dogs with allergies switch to grain free dog foods, when in reality, most allergies are not caused by grains at all. The only reason why the dogs sometimes improve, is because most grain free diets have limited ingredients also, thus taking away the food that is causing the allergy. If your dog has skin allergies, the reason is usually fleas, so go to the vet and get them on an oral medication for it. Topical doesn't work as well and it has caused chemical burns on dogs, flea collars don't work and they have also caused chemical burns. If their allergies don't clear up, put them on a reduction diet. Some meats cause allergies in dogs, so switch to a different flavor by the same brand. Usually, allergies are caused by beef. So switch to a food without beef, if that doesn't help then try another meat. Dairy, chicken, lamb, wheat gluten, soy and eggs cause the most allergies. After getting rid of each item, take your dog to the vet if it is still happening. It could be another ingredient, it could be medication, it could be their shampoo or conditioner, it could even be grass or plants in your yard even if they are safe for dogs. Also, be careful with essential oils. Some of them are highly toxic to dogs, so research them before using.

    Are the dedicated pet bowls mandatory? My cat has a species-specific slow feed food dish, but water is served on the floor in a drinking glass-his preference-with an old chipped cereal bowl full as a backup. Kitty cannot resist a human glass full of water. When dog sitting, I serve the dog food on a salad/dessert plate that I elevate on cushions or a box to aid digestion. Water is served the same way, on the floor, but I have to empty and fill the cereal bowl twice a day because dogs slurp their water! Cats vs. dogs drinking water is pretty funny.

    I found a "puzzle" food bowl to slow my dog's eating down. Of course, he figured it out right away (he was very smart), but it did take him a few minutes to snarf down his food vs. a few seconds. He never liked his food ball, go figure. He was very "gassy" when we first adopted him (he was little, but he could clear out a room very fast), until the Vet suggested a different kind of food. He was very "protective" of bones, and snarled at my daughter (he was normally very laid back & wasn't protective of his food), so we never got those after that. He loved hanging out in his crate; we rarely locked him in it, but just left the door open most of the time.

    I need advice! I’ve rescued lots of dogs off the street and have just brought in a 2.5 year old (approx) mixed breed, probably part pittie. He’s male and clearly not a dog with a lot of experience being inside. My problem is in getting him house trained! He seems anxious that he’ll be abandoned again and won’t go into the backyard unless I hang out with him. I do have other dogs and he gets along with them very well. They snuggle. Any advice on how to train an adult (neutered) dog? I’ve been using belly bands to avoid having to mop up pools of urine and I do crate him when I’m gone.

  • @pa4o93ir49
    @pa4o93ir493 жыл бұрын

    I think you should have mentioned a muzzle as well especially if it’s a breed that can be more aggressive or a dog that you don’t really know. You don’t wanna get a new dog and it bites out of fear and then has to be euthanized. It’s for the dogs safety when out in the public or when meeting people.

    Mostly it's to help with potty training. If they're already housetrained, then you don't really need it. Also some dogs are destructive or get into trouble when left alone so some people use the crate when they're not with the dog but if your dog doesn't have that problem then you're fine without it

    Aww good luck! I think probably in the first day or two, I'd work on building a bond, maybe feed them by hand, get them used to their name by saying it before you feed them, and bring them toys to play with. But also follow their cues, like if they seem too overwhelmed by you, don't force it or smother them with love. Just take it slow and give them time to get used to everything. Also I'd definitely start crate training so that they can stay in there when unsupervised until they're fully potty trained. Also if they're not potty trained yet, take them outside very frequently so that they don't have accidents inside the house and reward them when they pee and poop outside.

    There are pheromone products specifically made for dogs, you just plug a gadget into an electric outlet and it releases calming pheromones. Probably way safer than essential oils. The few side effects that may exist are already known and there are no long term ones so you can feel safe. Also dogs' noses are way more sensitive than ours, so essential oils can have a potential to stress them more than if they were without and some essential oils are toxic to dogs if they get in direct contact with them, so maybe best not to have them in the house at all.

    I just adopted a new rescue dog (6 months old) and sadly things didn't go as planned. We first intended for her to live inside of the house but she couldn't get along with our agreessive rescue cat at all so now she stays at our small garden. She doesn't have a crate but we are planning to build her a small dog house. I don't live in America and i also live in a rural area so most things i see in videos (pet care contact and most essentials) can't be found here. Most people on youtube explain housetraining and crates but is it ok for my rescue dog to live in our garden (as she also seems to like it there) and without a crate, and what tips would you give?

    I don't think the fact that prong collars can be used incorrectly is a reason to avoid their use. Do your research, go to a trainer for a few sessions to learn how to use them. It's highly unlikely you will find a reputable trainer who doesn't use prong or similar collars and most will tell you not to use harnesses. Go to trainers and vets for information, they are the correct source for accurate information.
