People who say positive reinforcement doesn't work are really saying they are too lazy or too impatient to train humanely and properly. So many people want the quick fix, but with time, patience and humane methods like Victoria show us, you will not only train your dog effectively and beautifully, but you will also be building a bond of love and trust with your dog.

Me too! I've used her methods on two dogs and it does work, but you have to out-patience your dog. When my dog is being extra stubborn, he immediately minds if I pull out my cell phone 😂 They want our attention and approval, WE have to do the work to show them how to earn it.

Some dogs are food and toy motivated, so of course not using them like in the vid would make the learning take months for those types. :p Just do as is fit for your dog. Some dogs just want to please their master and "Good girl!" is all they need.

I just started this today with my 6 1/2mo Great Dane pup and, although I did not have high hopes, it went quite well. He had a couple episodes of biting on the leash, so I just stopped, held it still and he got bored. I can see us eventually walking everywhere and him being well behaved. Side note: it also drains a lot of energy, so he is just more well behaved in general.

As humans, we tend to believe we need a lot of verbal recognition to communicate with our dogs. It's important to step outside ourselves and realize that, where our species' communication revolves around words, theirs revolves around body language. This means they're naturally very aware of yours -- if you've been around dogs, you know how they observe you. A smile or body posture that reflects relaxation and happiness means just as much to them as an "atta girl." The benefit of using this type of reward is that it helps to keep your dog (and you!) calmer. It would be easier for the puppy in this video to control her whining and jumping without the charge of excitement generated by Victoria's vocalizations. When you're calm, you teach your dog to be calm. It makes it easier for a dog not to pull, it makes it easier for them to be social with people and other animals, and it makes it easier for them to be loved by the multitudes. Good luck with your training, and may your dog teach you the art of relaxation and joy.

How do you find out what a dog is motivated by? I have a 4 year old rottweiler that is pretty well behaved most of the time. However, when he's on a walk and sees a dog, he will stare at the dog until the dog goes out of sight, or comes over. If the dog approaches and picks up a fight, or even just a game, he will be very aggressive. He likes food, but when he's outside nothing will distract him. He's generally not really motivated by toys or praises neither.

Some good breeders will start training (even clicker training!) at a young age. Learning starts (to be functional for people) at 1-2 weeks - even before they open their eyes!. Clickers can be scary, but if paired with super yummy food (cheese works well) a good breeder can start then too. I've seen a littler of 5 week old puppies all go from jumping on the xpen to sitting en-mass waiting for their bonus food rations (other than mom's)

Yes starting training as early as possible is important. Motive your dog to move with praise, food, toys while the leash is on. Let's go is a different command than come. Let's go is for on leash loose leash walking. Come is for off leash, the dog must come to you and sit in front of you.

Just keep up with turning around immediately if he jumps. Always make sure you never give him anything when he jumps. He must have all paws on the floor to get anything. Also, make sure he knows sit very well. Show him that he gets stuff like food or attention when he sits but jumping gets no response.

Like Victoria said this dog in the video doesn't like food or toys so she uses praise. She said you need to find what motivates your dog. I would say absolutely use toys or treats depending on your dog. Overtime once your dog is in the later stages of training you can phase our the treats/toys or give them spontaneously. Nancy ABCDT

Well, humans aren't their moms and dogs know that. And having prongs shoved into your throat constantly will only harm their trachea. That's why it's good to train your dog to walk loose leash, no matter what type of collar you use.

She doesnt seem to focus on me easily when I call her name as she is pulling even though she knows her name so it is difficult to switch direction so I have been stopping and saying stop until she stops and then I say lets go and start walking again but she most often starts pulling again. Do youhave any suggestions?

I think your puppy wants to be the alpha pup. You need to take control and let your puppy know you mean business but in a nice way. I would suggest taking your puppy out for small walks everyday and when it needs to go to the bathroom to get it used to being on the leash. Let your puppy know it is a fun experience and that he/she has nothing to worry about. If you don't mind, you might want to try putting your puppy in a harness to make it less stressful. I hope this helped. :)

I have a heavy puller because I skjor with my lab. She heels off-lease fine. I trained heel with no leash right-side, left-side, and backwards heeling using a food bowl (most labs are chow hounds). kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4SXl5uPpa-9hrA.html Left and right side heeling can be useful in retriever sports. I also teach a silent auto-sit whenever my left foot stops:kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGWXstKQiMisnsY.html The silent auot-sit while heeling is useful for us jump-shooting ducks at spring creeks up here in Alaska. These were easy to teach without a leash using food bowl training. I like food bowl training because with twice a day feeding, I have a eager student with 60 short training sessions per month.

Tree Quackers it’s a martingale, a type of corrective collar. It confuses me why she says she’s against corrective collars and then says nothing about the fact she’s using a martingale here instead of a flat collar or harness as she promotes on tv and her website

@@angelonajourney2405 its not a corrective collar though, you can tell if you pause and look at it. Please do not spread such claims

Do you think this will work with my 20 month old beagle cross spaniel. He is very food motivated but when he walks outside the beagle in him makes him pull so much because he wants to follow a smell

  • @nancyle8306

See what motivates your dog is it food, toys, praise? Make sure have things he will work for when the leash ison his collar. Look at how Victoria is using praise for the dog and crouching down low, using a really high voice. All to motivate her but, if your dog isnt responding you might be using the wrong motivator.
