In this video Matt and I will walk you through the basics of sandblasting with an inexpensive outdoor sandblasting gun for use with your air compressor. We use different sandblasting media for different results and show how you can DIY at home.

    I do commercial sandblasting during the summers. One thing you guys don't mention is safety with the sand. A lot of people who decide to do this at home use regular play sand as their media and this is a very BAD idea. Using sand to sandblast is a very good way to contract silicosis and is not good for your lungs in general. A simple dust mask is not enough when dealing with this stuff. A fully filtered respirator is needed to be safe, as well as sealed goggles. In general, I stay away from sand all together. It's too course for most work I do. Better alternatives are crushed walnut or crushed glass. Both are much safer to use as well.

    What about glass bead blasting? Still need to use a respirator or will a P95 mask work?

    No problem, harbor freight also has a bucket one too that is better if you have a lot to blast because you don't have to refill it very often.

    @BleepinJeep What psi do you need and an ideal size compressor? Mine runs max at 115 psi but only 50 litre capacity with a 1.1 kw motor, is my compressor powerful enought to run a sandblaster? or will it work but for only a minute at a time before the pressure has to build back up again

    I've never blasted with a hopper style gun, I've only blasted in small to medium sized cabinets where the blasting material is recovered and re-used. How much material did you use on, say, just the axle in the video? Also if you had to use a hopper style gun but had to do it in a garage or something, what's the best way to prepare the area for easiest cleanup?

    I'm wondering if my wheelbarrow style compressor @ 12.5cfm/135 psi will offer enough air to drive a small hand held or small pot blaster. The math says yes so long as the cfm's are challenged to close to the limits of the compressor. What say you?

  • @bleepinjeep

    @bleepinjeep

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Swede Jr. I'm no good at math but I'd say any compressor will work, but the smaller the air tank, the more you'll have to stand around and wait for the tank to build back pressure.

    What CFM output do you need from your compressor to operate that blast gun?

  • @boomstickkid

    @boomstickkid

    9 жыл бұрын

    Kevin Hornbuckle its rated for 10cfm at 100 psi. you will need a 60 gallon 220v compressor to run this consistantly if you plan on doing alot of blasting. you will be dissatisfied if trying to blast alot with these little hopper type guns. they are very unefficient aswell. a pressure pot is much better and faster.

    Try shooting at 90 degrees (perpendicular) from gun to the work surface to improve the effectiveness. In the video you can see he is not shooting anywhere close to 90 degrees which is why it is clear that the is not removing as much material and as quickly as you might have expected. By the way dude, aluminum soda cans are not anodized. The graphics and colors are printed using ink... typically UV cured these days.
