In this portion of a class session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class -- themed on Love, Friendship, and Desire this semester -- I ask students about some of the "big questions" that have puzzled them, and then lead them through a brief discussion of some of the main areas or sub-disciplines within Philosophy, including Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Logic, Social-Political Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Human Nature, Philosophy of Religion, and other "Philosophy of. . . . " areas. We also explore to some extent what makes the sorts of questions motivating Philosophy into these "big questions"

    @@lavande5252 My advice to you would be to watch a nice introductory video (there are many on youtube, many good ones by sir gregory sadler too) and maybe just jump right into reading some original works. I found "early modern philosophy" easy to read. You can start there with descartes, hume, locke and all. They have some good works on epistemology, and once you have read those... maybe try reading theaetetus and euthyphro by plato, that should develop a solid foundation for you! You can try reading other works based on your taste!

    ..sitting here and every time You asked a question and had no answer for a long time I replied as if I was in that class... I miss taking classes and having an active teacher who communicates with students on the same level. I took a class in World Religion, Life and Death and Ancient Beliefs. It was one of my favorite classes, mainly because the teacher was very easy to talk to. He encouraged us to ask questions and I always did, because I was really interested in all that. He also had a lot of experience in mythology, spiritualism and philosophy and I never missed a single class of his. I am really passionate about psychology as well and I believe philosophy is a great base for it, but can only take us this far. I enjoyed the lecture thus far and also managed to learn few new fancy words in English. Thank You.

I was definitely thinking about some sort of reading group at the college! I'll probably just have to get some of the professors together, discuss the possibility of one of them supporting it, and ask to make 3-min pitches at the beginning of their class to start one up. Implementing it as a habit -- now that's an interesting way to put it, very practical, actually, and at the same time, it also fits into how Aristotle would see it -- eventually it becomes a habitus, something that is an enduring part of a person's mind. The plan you're outlining here sounds quite good -- you get someone to commit to leading it, organizing, etc (and you could do some of that yourself as well), and then publicize it. I'd say also think about disciplines related to philosophy

    Well, after you take into account the fact that in each of those fields there are different schools, with different conceptions of their discipline. . . . Philosophy of . . . tends to be a more restricted enterprise, focused on a smaller set of topics, often more foundational ones, often involving accounts or argument. A linguist might, for instance work on dialect-mapping projects their entire career, and never worry about just what language (or dialect) actually is (key word, might. . . )

    You know, if you want to get involved in ongoing philosophical discussion, you might consider doing something like starting a reading group or what they call a "Philosophy Cafe" these days. I have to admit I've not done that myself, but there's a lot of talk about it. It is sometimes rather difficult to get people involved! Particularly family, I'd say. As for the video, I'm planning some more along these lines -- viewers have been asking for groundwork kind of stuff. . . .

    Definitely, I'd need a professor who was more well-versed in the various disciplines than myself. I suppose each month could be dedicated to some topic, in broad, with recommended readings. Well, it's a matter of developing a "feel" for those sorts of things, I'd say, by just slogging away in the field. I would say this: if you want to use that morality-ethics distinction, just be aware that it gets made multiple ways, and say to your interlocutors something like: "I realize that this could go different ways, but for the purposes of our discussion, I'm going to make this distinction, and here's what I mean by these terms. . . . Great video! I love philosophy, so I'm already aware of all of these concepts, but I enjoy the topic. Moreover, I enjoy seeing someone else who enjoys philosophy speak about it. 20:06 In epistemology, I'm very interested in whether there is any degree of direct doxastic voluntarism. I found a good paper on this by, I believe, Nishi Shah. I'm convinced that people do have direct control over, at least, the formation of those beliefs for which the warrant is equal (or nearly equal) to the warrant for their alternatives. Maybe you can share your ideas on this topic? I did want to let you know that at the end of the 'Intro to Philosophy' playlist a 'Religion in America' video has crept in (#28).

  • @GregoryBSadler

    @GregoryBSadler

    10 жыл бұрын

    Well, I tend to avoid (and find uninteresting and often obfuscating) jargon like "doxastic" and "voluntarism" and "warrant", which Analytics tend to use to think through matters. So, I've got nothing really to say about whether there is a degree of direct doxastic voluntarism. I'd say we have some degree of involvement and choice in what it is that we believe. Some more, some less. If you like to call that "voluntarism", you're perfectly free to do so (pun intended). I'm much more interested in how this would work, what thinkers would help us understand that, and how we get matters more right, than in classifications. So, I'm not likely to be of much help to you on this matter

  • @Real_LiamOBryan

    @Real_LiamOBryan

    10 жыл бұрын

    Gregory B. Sadler I tend to agree with you about avoiding unnecessary jargon; however, in this case (if you do get into studying about it) I can't find more fitting terms. For example: the name of the topic could be called something like "direct volition concerning the formation of beliefs". However, this would be both more verbose and less accurate. The term volition is only one part of voluntarism. Yeah! I hear you man. I too am interested in how it would work. I'm sort of stuck in-between direct and indirect voluntarism (I'm sorry, I don't know what other terms to use). I'm woefully ignorant of philosophical authors. I'm hoping to remedy that soon; however, for now, I am teaching myself the major languages of western philosophy in order to read them in the original languages. Could you suggest authors on the topic? I think that Plantinga writes about the issue and subscribes to indirect doxastic voluntarism. I already mentioned Shah. I think that he subscribes to direct voluntarism; however, I don't think he believes that the beliefs are causally non-deterministic (or indeterminate, I don't know the proper term).

    I ask myself...Where does ontology fall and how is it related to metaphysics? Which founds which? A metaphysical question is, "Why is there something rather than nothing?" But we maintain ourselves within the "is" and the metaphysical question presupposes it. So we first must ask what the "is" means. And so it looks like ontology is the foundational philosophy of the two. But you can't do ontology without "the thing which is" -- which are entities and these must and are available to us in some way. What I am getting at is that it seems one has to presuppose some sort of metaphysics to even do ontology. By inquiring any entity as to its being we have already delineated that the entity we are studying, and studying it as it presents itself, "is the case". But isn't the question of "what is the case" or "what is really there?" a metaphysical question? I'm so foggy headed in this distinction between ontology and metaphysics. Perhaps there is nothing to be distinguished? Its actually probably on account of my lack of understanding of these terms...Just a thought I will continue to think about...

  • @GregoryBSadler

    @GregoryBSadler

    9 жыл бұрын

    In my book, ontology and metaphysics are pretty much the same thing -- using different terms to denote the study of being as such, the relations between beings, etc. People have used those two terms in such varied ways over the course of philosophy, that it's always important to ask what particular understanding of metaphysics or ontology one is encountering or using. It's a similar issue with "ethics" and "morality" or "morals". People like to make distinctions between them, but they always end up being rather provincial distinctions, which can't be readily applied to the whole history of philosophy (where other thinkers used them different ways)

    Ontology precedes epistemology. In that sense, we cannot know anything if we are unable to know them, i.e., we would not be able to inquire into anything if we did not exist.

  • @agreczynka

    @agreczynka

    The use of terms depends greatly on which tradition of philosophy you are using: realism or idealism. Metaphysics falls into realistic tradition as it considers beings or entities as separate and independent from thinking although intelligible. Ontology is traditionally associated with idealistic way of thinking in which either ideas are precondition of being or are identified as being per se.

  • @GregoryBSadler

    Anna Greczynka That's one -- but certainly not the only -- way to make the distinction, and it's tradition-bound as well. Better, for the casual viewer, who doesn't need to be bound to any particular tradition, simply to say: some people like to distinguish the two. They've got their reasons. They're not universally recognized ones. So, as far as MY class goes, I'm not going to worry students with them

    It came out in 1999. The average 18 year old student in this class would have been 4 years old in 1999.

    Dont some things need to be objective to be applicable to all? like morals such as murder? maybe i am not thinking deeply into this, what are your thoughts?

  • @GregoryBSadler

    @GregoryBSadler

    Sure, that's one way to think about objectivity. Not sure, given all of the stuff we're discussing in this video, why the subjective-objective distinction seems to be the one thing you're focused on

    does life have purpose if you die and everyone u touched die too. i keep thinking if we dont live on in some way forever our lives had no purpose or meaning

    use that to your advantage. if you don't believe life has a purpose, create one for yourself and others around you.

  • @GregoryBSadler
    @GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын

    Yeah. . . I don't buy it. Every such distinction -- and I've seen a lot of them in my years of studying, teaching, and writing about this stuff -- ends up beginning from some arbitrary starting point, from which the person decides "ethics/ethical" means this "moral/morals/morality, etc" means this. After you've seen enough of those distinctions made -- and how often they differ from each other. . . and if you work in the history of ideas, seeing people use the terms interchangably. . . .

    Anarchist would rather have no government and call it direct democracy. It's about not having a leader, but a society of leaders.

    Are you trying to point out that some things are subjective and other things are objective?

  • @GregoryBSadler

    @GregoryBSadler

    10 жыл бұрын

    No. I'm not usually all that interested in that distinction. If something is "subjective," I want to know just how it is so, and from what standpoint, not just that it is so. Same for "objective". Rather slippery terms, when you get down to it

    I think the question that irritates me the most is, why is there something rather than nothing at all? I mean why does the universe exist? That's my number one philosophical compliant, not knowing the answer.

    I'm 15 and I watched Matrix and I certainly connected it to the allegory of the cave. I believe that this was where you were going with this example but unfortunately the students were not familiar with it. Oh, and nice video by the way, I am just starting to study philosophy as a hobby and that was a great introduction.
