Intro to Limbic System Retraining Exercises | re-origin.com

Limbic system retraining refers to any exercises aimed to restore proper function to the limbic system. More often than not, for those struggling with a chronic health condition, the limbic system has been reset to default to a heightened state of arousal and anxiety. This leads to hyper-sensitization and increased levels of immune activity and inflammation.
re-origin.com/
In such cases, the goal of any limbic system retraining exercise program should be to systematically desensitize the limbic system with respect to the triggering stimuli. This is all possible thanks to neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s innate ability to change both its structure and its function in response to new activity and information. If you’ve ever gone from not knowing how to ride a bike, and then being able to find your balance and ride… you’ve used neuroplasticity. If you once were afraid to fly, and now you love jet-setting off to different places… you’ve used neuroplasticity. Every time a new habit, routine or skill is acquired, the brain has changed accordingly.
When it comes to rewiring the stress response, there are a small handful of basic principles that make up good limbic retraining exercises.
5 Key characteristics of limbic system retraining exercises
The process of improving brain function by building new beneficial neural pathways is made possible thanks to brain plasticity. Just like a muscle can respond to training, so too can the limbic system change with the help of deliberate brain retraining or ‘rewiring’ exercises. However, not all exercises are created equally. For anyone looking to overcome a heightened threat reflex, the following elements must be included in an effective brain retraining program:
Identification
The person must become aware of the heightened stress response, what triggers it, and how it feels in the body and mind.
Interruption
The limbic retraining exercise should prompt the individual to interrupt the vicious cycle of reacting to symptoms. This is typically done through a combination of body language, somatosensory mapping, and NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programing to rewrite any old mental scripts or trauma loops
Elevated Emotion
The person must learn to shift their brain chemistry from CAN (Cortisol, Adrenaline, Neurepinephrine) dominant to DOSE (Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins) dominant. This is typically done through mental rehearsal and/or allowing oneself to become immersed in a positive and pleasant sensory experience. Listening to music, dancing, visualizing health, and walking in nature are all good options.
Somatic Experience
It isn’t enough to simply intellectually understand this process in the cortex. Rather, an emotional shift must be felt in one’s body. It is for this reason that such sayings as: “Lose your mind, come to your senses” can be helpful to employ.
Intrinsic Reward
The process of identifying, interrupting, and replacing an old unpleasant experience or response with a new positive one, eventually becomes its own reward and thus triggers the release of dopamine with respect to the act of improving one’s brain through limbic retraining exercises. It becomes easier and easier to maintain motivation, and results beget further results.
Repetition, repetition, repetition
Bruce Lee once said: “I don’t fear the man who practiced 10,000 different kicks. I fear the man who practiced 1 kick, 10,000 times.” - A core principle of any effective brain rewiring program is repetition. If permanent change is the goal then it must be understood that, just like going to the gym, the brain and body do not change in any meaningful way based on what is done once or twice. Rather, it’s what you do repeatedly that leads to lasting change.

I answered my own question. I just looked it up and there’s like three levels at around $300, $500, and $900 if I remember what I just looked at. That seems inexpensive for what it is. I was expecting it to be a lot more. All the healing and therapists I’ve been to have cost way more and it’s so different than something that’s focused this way. For me I’ve missed tons of work because of my mental health so if this worked it would be totally worth it.

I used to sleep awesome until a devastating event a year ago that left me extremely overwrought for months; I then suffered horrible insomnia for 6-8 months. It was killing me. I developed leaky gut, digestive issues, debilitating constipation, hives, bone crushing depression. If it weren’t for my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ I wouldn’t have made it. He lead me to EFT. I got a book called EFT for Christians, did what it said to do, and have been sleeping very well since. I do semi-regular EFT now, as it calms the nervous system. I also do deep breathing, 4 seconds in, hold for 7 seconds, long exhale when I lay in bed to fall asleep and it works. Also, long walks in nature, especially after dinner, very helpful. Get rid of the caffeine; that is 100% stress right there. I’m doing the GAPS diet to fix my digestive system; I no longer have leaky gut. I am on the mend. I hope this helps. Agreed. But 20 years ago, I was working for a company and I was sitting amongst almost 100 computers in one room every day. I started to notice my system getting weak, and I was becoming more sensitive to electronics TVs cell phones and so on. You’re right it is the exposure, but what can we do adapt? May rewire our brains? Or better yet, go back to the basics and eliminate a lot of the technology, if not all. That is my wish. God bless.

Our recommended package is the "Rediscover" which gives you access to the course, community form, and three months of weekly coaching. That one is listed for $497. We also do offer 1-1s. • @re_origin

Skin sensitivities can sometimes (but not in all cases) be caused or perpetuated by high levels of stress and inflammation. We have had a number of people in our program see improvements with things like psoriasis, rashes, and skin sensitivities. Of course, these are individual results, and you should always consult your doctor to see what role (if it does play a role) a chronic elevated stress response has to do with your unique condition.

@@re_origin thanks for the response. I’m certain that a stress event caused my condition (chronically chapped lips). Directly after my stress event, my peeling lip condition occurred. @@tanyawieczorek6603 I read this out loud and recorded myself. Then, I replay it whenever I want, and speak the speaking parts with it: Start by sitting up nice and tall, closing your eyes, and taking some deep breaths. Ground yourself in the present moment, establishing a sense of peace and safety. Feel nice and secure. Deep breath in and deep breath out. You can keep your eyes closed if it’s comfortable or open them if you want to engage in some journaling or drawing during your practice rounds. If you’re having any sort of symptoms, take a moment to tell yourself “it's okay to stop this overreaction of my nervous system.” Take a step back and look at your brain, mind, and body as a team working together but having distinct and separate parts. Say “Limbic System, it's okay to take a break. It’s okay to rest. You are overreacting to these stimuli that are not harmful, but I understand that you're reacting this way because of trauma. You’re reacting this way because in the past we did have experiences that forced this reaction to protect ourselves. But now we keep falling into that same pattern over and over and it's not helping anymore. It's actually hurting. So I give myself permission, I give my nervous system and my limbic system permission to stop, calm down, and rest.” Envision your limbic system like someone at the control room that sets the alarm off when something goes wrong and telling that person to turn the alarm off; “everything is safe and we can rest. There’s nothing else to be hyper vigilant about. Take a deep breath and calm down, we are safe. But at the same time, thank you body, mind, brain, and spirit for working so hard to protect me. We've put so much effort into trying to feel safe and protect ourselves and figure out symptoms, but we don't have to do that right now. We are working on healing, and we are at a place where we are healing every single day, and that healing energy is coming to us. We don't have to strive for it anymore. So, nervous system, take a breath, sit back, and relax. You can switch from fight or flight mode over to rest and digest. You can enjoy life again." Take some time to think about what it will feel like when you are completely healed because you are getting there every day one step at a time. Close your eyes and envision a time and a place where you are totally healthy and healed. For example, you can imagine yourself walking down the beach on a beautiful vacation. You’re not thinking of symptoms and instead, you’re thinking about the feeling of the sand on your toes, dipping your toes in the water, listening to the waves crashing on the shore, feeling energized. “I feel vibrant, I feel grateful, I feel calm, I know that I have the energy to do anything that I want to do on this vacation that I'm envisioning.” I look ahead at the beach and I know that I want to run down to the very end and watch the sun rise. In fact, since my body is healed, it can do anything that I need it to do. I smell beautiful smells all around me; tropical smells, the smell of the sand and the salt, perhaps even the smell of sunscreen. None of is bothering me because my nervous system is healed, so it does not interpret any of these stimuli as dangerous. It only takes things in and is able to address them for what they are, which is neutral stimuli. I am healed in such a way that I feel powerful and my limbic system and amygdala no longer overreact to any stimuli. I can move as much as I want, I can eat whatever I want, I can smile as wide as I want, and I can laugh as loud as I want. I can be around other people and the sights and smells and sensations and bright lights and noises, and none of it bothers me because I feel so inherently and intrinsically safe. Take a few moments to really be in that visualization. Close your eyes and truly feel and visualize the sensations, walking one foot in front of the other, grounding in the sand, hearing the waves, smelling the ocean, feeling the sunlight and the breeze on your face, listening to the sounds around you, and then confirming “I am healing; I’m healing my brain, healing my nervous system, and with whatever else I'm doing that is allowing me healing of my body and my symptoms, I will get to this state of peace with complete certainty and confidence. I'm getting there every day.” Deep breath in, deep breath out with your hands to your hearts center, taking a moment to set this intention. “I am healing, I am safe, I am loved, I am at peace. Doing these practice rounds multiple times a day, visualizing and tapping into a positive psychology of what it will be like when you're healing, you create new neuronal pathways in your brain and tell your amygdala and your hippocampus that it’s okay, you can calm down. Visualizing new memories that aren't even fully formed yet (our brain doesn't know the difference if they're real or fake). So if you can create these core memories and store them in the hippocampus, believing that you’re safe, then the amygdala is no longer overactive during potential stress and fear responses. If people don't address the psychology behind their condition, they can get get stuck in the chronic illness cycle for years and years. Others are able to have these illnesses, setbacks, and traumas and heal perfectly. A lot of it has to do with our own resilience, nervous system, trauma we went through, and the way that our brain has wired ourselves and our limbic system to respond in a physical way, because our brain and body are linked so closely together. Do this every day, putting yourself in these positive, grateful, loving, mindful positions to signal continuous healing.
