Good Job
NICE!!! I would so Love to make my own bows!!! Thanks 4 Sharing bud.. P.S .. May take you up on the offer sometime! My Wife & I need to get out and do some Travelling. Cheers
Depending on the wood I use steam or boil the wood to shape for a deflex / reflex best to sinew back to retain that shape or it may pull out from use
You bet , I love working the wood and finding it as much as I love the bow
On yew I tend to leave the sap wood back with the heartwood belly , 1/3 rd sap to 2/3 rds heart, sapwood is good in tension and heartwood good in compression .
coool film!!!!!
Thank you , working on a video for more on tillering .
good one!
thank you
when I was a kid (no internet times) we made bows with friend from sticks, it was fun :)
Thank you so much for your help! any idea where i can get one of those draw knives you used to "debark" the stave?
Hello! Great video! The use of sapwood instead of heartwood (at least so it seems) does obey a certain flexibility criterion?
Raptor all my respect. I wish I you could be my teacher! Here in Argentina is incredibly difficult to find someone with experience in building bows. I've been looking for someone for the last years with no luck.

@@user-mb4se6km5p I started but I had to stop doing it because I couldn't find anyone to teach me.
thank you for the reply :)
3 years is a hell of a long time. :O
Classic beauty. May I ask does one keep the top of the tree of the wood as the top of the bough of he bow? Would love to take your course but you are a bit far. Any fellow craftsmen or women in he U.K. you would recommend. Thank you for your clip.
Your pocketknife can still be your most valuable possession, and you just have to get out there and have fun and your "childhood" will still be there
nice bow
Man, yew have serious skills
I was just looking for a weekend-week long project. There's a dead Aspen I haven't cut down...will that work?
what are the tools you used called? cause iv'e made bows from silver birch, but i used wood chisels, a rasp, wood files and sand/glasspaper, but this takes a long time and it looks like the tools you used do a better job.
where can I get some for that wood so I can make one
how do you string the bow? like how do you get the bow to stick to the wooden part?
What are the names of the two tools you used? One was just a flat piece of metal and the other you used while tillering.
can you use a much thinner branch than that to start?
I want to work for you. Dream job for sure!
nOT AT THIS TIME , HAPPY TO HAVE YOU SIGN UP FOR A BOWBUILDING CLASS ON OUR WEB PAGE HOWEVER
this may seem weird but splitting that wood kinda looked fun
thanck you

It’s yew wood
How do you dry wood with out it splitting? I've tried it and it always slits on me.
thought those wedges were super hot for a second!
This is wonderful, I would like to learn to do this slowly. But I have two questions = 1. Does the draw knife need to be exceptionally razor sharp, like woodworking chisels for example ? 2. Can I use an electric wheel to shape it very roughly, before the draw knife ? I mean go from axe --> to electric wheel --> to draw knife

1 no but it is very subjective, it depends on the wood and the phase you're at , for chasing a ring some prefer a dull blade so as not to skip and violate the ring that would be your back, this is only relevant if you work with wood that require you to chase the ring , osage, locust, etc.. white wood does not need that , you remove the sapwood and you 're done 2 you can use power tools but where's the fun in that ? totally up to you
So when you cut a part of a tree , you need to wait 3 years to dry and then start building the bow ?

Any kind of woodwork normally begins with a drying or seasoning time, _especially_ if the wood has been transported from one region to another. The wood you get from box stores has been dried too, but usually it's done in a kiln (badly). The result from _not_ drying is that as you work or when you finish the wood will warp and twist as the weather changes with the seasons.
Yes you can , some early bows were made from limbs
hey, quick question. i am getting into bow making. how do you get a reflex deflex from a straight stave? i think i have some idea, but i better take it from an expert. Thanks, SS2

Can i make a bow and then dry it ?
can you use bodark? if so how well does it do?
@rogerward3185

I don't know if you've found an answer to your question yet, but my understanding is that "bodark" is a corruption of "bois d'arc," french for "bow wood" if that helps.
What wood should I use for a self recurve bow?

So, I came here because I made a bow in the summer and it "bowed" a little bit. I think it is because I brought it to my godmoms house to store and my room gets really hot even though i tried to store it in the closet. Is there any way to "unbow" it? I dont keep the bow strung. However, I was curious if stringing it for a day would correct the "bowing" because it bends slightly the opposite way that it should when it is strung. If that makes any sense whatsoever. Please ask me questions if im not clear. Thanks.

+Ashley Burch if it bent away from you that could actually be a good thing , if it bent toward you, you just lost some performance whatever it was you never store a wooden bow in a closet standing up
@caseyb1346

It is a good thing for a bow to bend away from you when it is unstrung. You are very lucky if a bow you made did that on its own. Most bows do the opposite, they take 'set' and don't fire as good as when they were brand new.
3 YEARS?!?! i was hoping 3 WEEKS
