The wood your working with are all more tension strong and a little bit weak on the compression they take string follow or set ; have you tried fire hardening the belly with 4 inches of backset on a form and then the final tiller there doing some amazing stuff in America with it at the moment rediscovering the way the Indians speed Dried and fire hardened the belly of a bow to make a bow equal with the best bow woods that can be had like Osage and yew they make a bow that only holds half the moisture an unhardened bow will hold making it lighter and faster and holding a couple of inches of backset making them fast no string follow

Thanks for that info, I will definitely check out that method. We have also started experimenting with quite a lot of local timbers, that have never been used for bowmaking before, and have found one species of rainforest tree which is as good as Osage Orange, without the need to chase a ring.

Yes some of the mahogany’s work well in a long bow form but the wattles and native ash would work best in American white wood flat-bow if you can then narrow it down to what works best speed trying and fire hardening well you can make a second grade white wood bow that will give an arrow speed of 170 Food per second then you’re talking
