I'm kind of torn on the verse sung to the baby instead. It makes sense for the Witch's character to consider taking the baby and running. But I always loved the "You're so nice. If only because it really made it hit home how our protagonists are just designated heroes and it felt like the thesis statement of the show to me.

Yeah, those are the original lyrics but this production seems to have changed them to lean into the parental theme of the show instead of the morality theme. I do like her singing to the baby but it just doesn’t beat the biting sting encapsulated in “you’re not good, you’re not bad, you’re just nice“ which I think ties up the story and characters so well

Hmm the change is so interesting... its a darker look that points out that everything pure will be corrupted by the world around them, which is still a very accurate interpretation of the show. I like the whole dynamic with the baby it really heightens the tension of the scene, like she’s questioning to do what she did with Rapunzel again but with the Baker’s baby, it really ties together the witches narrative a lot better. Especially when she decides not to take the baby because everyone will grow up to be flawed anyways. But holding the baby from the start of Last Midnight doesn’t work well because all of her lines are towards other characters, but the baby detracts and distract from those lines. She should only pick the baby up after “JUST GIVE ME THE BOY!” “No!”

@@brucewish7137 i think I saw an interview sondheim mentioning the main theme of the show is parenting. Baker isn't moral or a good father figure. He tried to trick kids to get what he want. Children also have some issues. Jack kills a giant dude and steal his stuff cuz his mom always nagged him for being poor, cinderella was told to behave and become so passive she can't decide her own marrage. These are the plot of the stories we tell the kids at night, and kids don't think it's wrong since they are the main characters. But the show gives them consequences after the 'happy ending'. Characters go nuts, and in the end Baker actually grow as a father telling kids they are not alone, and so are other people, killing 'bad guys' for your benefit isn't ok. And ofc the finale song. Children might not behave they listen. What you tell the kids can affect them, what you think is right or harmless can be wrong. Think of the impact in your kid's future before you feed an idea to a kid. It's been a while since I saw the musical and the movie so I might miss out some details, but this is how I percieved the show. I know there's no right answere, just want to tell you why I thought the theme was parenting :) hope you have a good day

Seeing a lot of discourse here, going to add to it not that I think it will make a huge difference? I was really torn on the big lyric change first time watching through the show, the full production of which had a number of changes that impacts the subject addressed by different songs. If people don’t want to be spoiled for the whole production here’s the warning. The implication that the narrator is the baker’s child, this story is the version the baker told to his child in the ending, this lyric change really helps hammer home that point. The line when he matures he’ll be just like them, on a rewatch that literally happens: you see in act one and beginning ish of two how the narrator child, or baker’s child, can be just like the protagonists he idealizes, flaws and all. Also adds some layers to how the witch sacrificed him to the giant first time around but regrets that decision when her own child is killed and opts to runaway and protect the child second time around. Bernadette’s witch was bitter because the world keeps fucking itself over because of some “morales,” Hannah’s witch is bitter because the world keeps fucking her over. Bernadette’s witch was more a “force” or stand in for the world/nature’s utilitarian need to keep itself together at whatever cost, Hannah’s witch is much more of a unhinged and grieving mother, in order to match the show’s themes. I still love the OG line so much, but given the shift in focus, I respect this pretty darn bold creative choice, and Hannah SLAYS, it pays off.

I think they used these same lyrics in the 2002 revival with Vanessa Williams. I don't know why they changed it though.
Such a fantastic witch!! Her look is rly cool too
Amazing set
Brilliant staging. Playing off the witches grief at the death of Rapunzel.
She’s great but I hate the lyric changes. “You’re so nice, you’re not good you’re not bad you’re just nice” really sums up the show for me.

but the show is more about how you raise a child than ambiguity of morality itself...? I do love the old lyrics but new one is more accurate message I think.

I know there's no right answere, just want to tell you why I thought the theme was parenting :) hope you have a good day
Omg omg omg!!! I love this so much I had to leave another comment.🌸🌸🌸🌸💐💐💐

Oh this is the woman from Ted Lasso!
They changed my favorite line: "You're just nice/you're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice/I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right/ I'm the witch"
Lil Red is ready to punch someone’s teeth out. 💥👊
funny, when i FIRST saw this, I considered Hannah the weakest link, now I think she's the strongest. go figure
The way she's holding the baby's neck😱
Should it be that perfect?
Better than the Disney film and the original cast.

How did they take out the most important line of Last Midnight??
So I need some information about the ending. I’ve seen two different version. One has the witch screaming Boom Crunch and the other is like this one with her saying “Mother here I come!”. I’ve seen a school production with the Mother line used instead of Boom Crunch.

I met Into the woods through the 2014 film, and in the film she falls off a cliff, I started to look for the original broadway production and I thought that in the play she died the same way, then I found out she was dying differently. Then I was told that she is trampled, just like Rapunzel, but Jack says that, since he found her under a tree ... If she was trampled why, in heaven's name she was found under a tree??? What kind of red riding hood is that( not shes a bad actor but shes seems a little old for a small child)

The reason they give little red an older actor is because of the song hello little girl. The song is a representation of sexual assault and the original costume for the wolf including nudity. So to make it appropriate the let and older women play little red instead of a young girl

Jack and Red Riding Hood are often traditionally cast with older actors as opposed to children. In the 2014 movie version, they cast real children.
