InterVLAN Routing: 3 options

InterVLAN Routing: 3 options
Today my topic is three options of Inter-VLAN routing.
As we know, each VLAN is a different and isolated broadcast domain. Hosts on separate VLANs are not able to communicate even though they are connected to the same switch. However, we want their communications between these VLANs in many cases.
In other words, we must find ways to route the traffic between different VLANs. This is known as inter-VLAN routing.
Today I would like to talk about three options of inter-VLAN routing.
Option 1: using a router in the traditional way
Option 2: Router on-a-stick interVLAN routing
Option 3: Multilayer switch interVLAN routing

    Hey what would be the best approach for ip cameras and a few wireless cams? I was thinking the traditional one as i only have 4 ip cameras. I was thinking of gettitng the omada tp link but its a bit pricey for me. I was thinking if smart switch will be good to go and vlan router( does it have to be vlan out just any router). Very helpful classes.. Thanks.. A basic question is in my mind that if we usually create VLANs to avoid inter communication..so by chance if we want them to communicate with each other then y dont we simply delete those Vlans and set them on default VLAN..Y these methods used like stick or others ... Response will be appreciated.

    i think the normal communication between computers in the same VLANS will stay. If the comp1 from vlan1 want to for example ping comp3 from vlan3 its will be just avilable BUT default commincation in vlans will stay like there wouldn't be any others computers over own vlan.

    how does SVI obtain its mac address?

  • @MagnumCarta

    @MagnumCarta

    4 жыл бұрын

    The switch keeps track of MAC addresses per VLAN through a "Content Addressable Table" (CAM for short) that is updated any time a new MAC address responds with a VLAN ID tag in its packet. This is at least true for Cisco, I can't speak for Arista or Juniper switches or other vendors. The MAC address is updated via the source machine sending a request/response. If the MAC address cannot be found in the table, the table is updated with this new MAC address. Hope this helps.
