InterVLAN Routing: 3 options
InterVLAN Routing: 3 options
Today my topic is three options of Inter-VLAN routing.
As we know, each VLAN is a different and isolated broadcast domain. Hosts on separate VLANs are not able to communicate even though they are connected to the same switch. However, we want their communications between these VLANs in many cases.
In other words, we must find ways to route the traffic between different VLANs. This is known as inter-VLAN routing.
Today I would like to talk about three options of inter-VLAN routing.
Option 1: using a router in the traditional way
Option 2: Router on-a-stick interVLAN routing
Option 3: Multilayer switch interVLAN routing

Hey what would be the best approach for ip cameras and a few wireless cams? I was thinking the traditional one as i only have 4 ip cameras. I was thinking of gettitng the omada tp link but its a bit pricey for me. I was thinking if smart switch will be good to go and vlan router( does it have to be vlan out just any router). Many thanks everyone
Hello sunny , your explanation is awesome . Can you please explain the routing protocol

Very helpful classes.. Thanks.. A basic question is in my mind that if we usually create VLANs to avoid inter communication..so by chance if we want them to communicate with each other then y dont we simply delete those Vlans and set them on default VLAN..Y these methods used like stick or others ... Response will be appreciated.
@uchobanan7025

i think the normal communication between computers in the same VLANS will stay. If the comp1 from vlan1 want to for example ping comp3 from vlan3 its will be just avilable BUT default commincation in vlans will stay like there wouldn't be any others computers over own vlan.

The VLAN still creates a smaller broadcast domain. ACLs can be used to limit access, and can be assigned per port.
hi sunny , I have a confusion on how does the source know destination ip address or whom to deliver the packets ,can you please answer ,thanks in advance
Can inter-VLAN communication be achieved only at Layer 2, without a router or a L3 switch, by setting up SVIs on the switch?
Excellant
in last option so SVI is basically clone of router, like switch with routing table? but hows the management done for this switch? can someone explain this, thanks

Sunny Classroom can those options allows computers to use WWW? Especially im asking for the third option (3-layer switch)?
@johnguilbert1349
3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely.
Hi Sunny I am using the third option that is using multilayer switch, I created different vlans and associated them with access port of two different ethernet ports, however I could not ping one host to the other, in some videos I found that we have to enable routing using ip routing command, however that command is not workiing in my case, I am kind of stuck here. I am using cisco nexus 900v switch. Could you please help

Dear sunny, i have achieved the inter vlan routing by using multi layer switch, but what should i do if VLANs wants to communicate with other branch
how does SVI obtain its mac address?
@MagnumCarta
4 жыл бұрын
The switch keeps track of MAC addresses per VLAN through a "Content Addressable Table" (CAM for short) that is updated any time a new MAC address responds with a VLAN ID tag in its packet. This is at least true for Cisco, I can't speak for Arista or Juniper switches or other vendors. The MAC address is updated via the source machine sending a request/response. If the MAC address cannot be found in the table, the table is updated with this new MAC address. Hope this helps.
Hey Sunny do you have transcripts for your videos? I want to be able to put what you are saying into my own words for my notes. Thank you for the Great Videos!

No, sorry.
Can you name a TP-Link router to serve as inter vlan. I'm tired of looking for what particular model for this kind of router. All the tutorial on KZread same as yours. But didn't talk much about the real physical router / switch model.
This feels like im cheating This cant be this easy to understand
