I do not think that is a sign of obsession, but it is his way to express how much he missed Xie Lian, and also to practise his sculpting skills. Well, Hua Cheng had to be in the Donglua Mountain for ten years alone, he could not go out, and Xie Lian was his whole reason to break out. He had to do something or else he could go mad.

My favorite Hua Cheng lines are: "You say that because you are ignorant." and "Violence works for me." I also love the line when he is all in Xie Lian's face and says, "What would be ideal?"

So he said he isn’t ahead with the story so I think the character as he sees it will grow and change as he learns more and more about hua cheng from the multiple angles. Therefor the way he said “I am forever your most devoted believer” now will be much different to the final line and that is even more exciting

I'm glad that he mentioned Studio Tumble and Studio Flint Sugar, those two are amazing studios with incredible animation, their indie short animation were awesome! I got such chills at "Gege, I am forever your most devoted believer!" I was already like "wow, what a voice" from watching the dub but I'm definitely getting extra joy from knowing there's such a sweet and cute guy behind that voice too. I'm delighted by how well James has intuited Hua Cheng's character (total simp, confident as fuck, looks hot and knows things, actual badass) -- it's a great start. If the donghua gets there one day (oh, please may it!) I'm excited to see him play Wuming. Fantastic interview -- I laughed out loud so much! I honestly did not think I would like the English dub this much or be this okay with Hua Cheng saying Xie Lian but when a VA gets it this right, he can say whatever works and I'll buy it.

I didn't get to say this in the live chat- but Fu Yao didn't even get his own mention. He was just "the other attendant" 😭 So glad you got this opportunity though, Kictor! I enjoyed watching!

Since Hua Cheng knows soooo much about Xie Lians life I think it might be really helpful to read the books to know more about the things that happened to Xie Lian and him before. Just to understand why in some situations he gets extra protective for example. I mean voice acting him without knowing these things might still work fine. I'm just saying Hua Cheng is a character that is set apart from almost every other character by his knowledge about things others never thought he'd know anything about.
