Interview with Yuval Noah Harari | VPRO Documentary

Interview with Yuval Noah Harari in Tel Aviv. Due to copyright limitations we don’t show the clips he discusses, but instead we describe them below.
A long conversation with writer and historian Yuval Noah Harari, who was asked to pick six clips from films and tv-series and talk about them and his personal view of our time and the world.
Yuval Noah Harari is one of the most influential thinkers of our century. He became world famous with his books 'Sapiens', 'Homo Deus' and '21 lessons for the 21st century'. Harari explains in his books the enormous success of the species of man. But he also explains that dark clouds are gathering over that autocratic status.
Janine Abbring speaks to Yuval Noah Harari in Tel Aviv. Due to copyright limitations we don’t show the clips they discuss, but instead we describe them below:
00:00 Introduction
03:34 Once Upon a Time...Man
This is a French animated children TV series from 1978 directed by Albert Barillé. We see human evolution depicted. This series contains many examples, such as the hunt for mammoths in this scene, that emphasize that the different tribes gradually learned to work together to make life more pleasant. It also quickly becomes apparent in this scene that some people have a tendency to boss others around, or take off with the loot. But the message, of course, is that the group will eventually make it through working together.
14:25 Game of Thrones
A military battle scene from the fantasy series Game of Thrones. We see Jon Snow- he’s the "good guy"- talking to the leader of the Wildlings, a more anarchistic posse. And then they suddenly find themselves surrounded by the massive army of another king, Stannis Baratheon, whose cavalry overruns the wildling encampment. They are interrupted by a massive cavalry charge led by Stannis and Davos that overruns the wildling encampment. Mance surrenders and is taken captive on Jon's suggestion.
22:10 The Big Short
The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Adam McKay. The film is noted for the unconventional techniques it employs to explain financial instruments. In this scene we see singer-songwriter Selena Gomez, and economist Richard Thaler, who break the fourth wall to explain the concept of so-called "synthetic collateralized debt obligations" by using the metaphor of black jack in a casino.
35:03 Inside Out
Inside Out is an American animation film from 2015 made by Pixar. The film was written and directed by Pete Docter. The movie shows the inner workings of an 11-year old girl named Riley. Most of the movie we are inside her head, where different emotions are portrayed as characters. The emotions are: Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. These personified emotions live inside her.
The clip Harari chose is the beginning of the movie, where the different emotions are introduced and the basic workings of Riley’s personality are explained.
45:10 Her
Her is a 2013 American science-fiction romantic drama film by Spike Jonze. The film follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an artificially intelligent virtual assistant, personified through a female voice. Harari chose a scene where we see Theodore and Samantha on a date together. Samantha is playfully guiding Theodore around on a fun fair while he has his eyes closed. She is talking about her fantasies and feeling embarrassed.
53:34 Please like me
Please Like Me is an Australian television comedy-drama series created by Josh Thomas, who also plays the main character Josh. The series gives us an honest and humorous portayal of friendship, love and sexuality. It deals with heavy themes like depression, loss and homophobia, but approaches them with an admirable lightness.
Harari chose a clip from Season 2 episode 6. In the episode Josh agrees to take his mum and her friend Hannah and Arnold to the zoo. Arnold is more Josh's age and they go see the meerkats and butterflies together. When they're in the aquarium, Arnold suddenly kisses Josh. Josh responds positively and they have a sweet first kiss.
01:08:45 Once Upon a Time...Man
See clip 1 for general series information.
We see an extremely bleak future for mankind in the last episode of the series Once Upon a Time….Man: we see a polluted earth, crowded cities, conflict, war. In the evolution and long history of the earth and mankind, we have managed to ruin almost everything in one short century. We have polluted the earth and people have created an atomic bomb to kill each other.

now the big question I would like to ask this man, is: if the technology is there to hack human beings and decide before it gets born, to "repair" the DNA that would make it gay in the future. Would he use it or allow it? Because being gay, means you arent reproductive. Gay people living isolated, would eventually die out and not exist anymore. (logically speaking) so the nature here cancels itself out. | Or would he prefer an algorithm deciding his fate during the teenage years, accepting it as normal? So what is the better choice? "Cure" gay beforehand? Or Let algo decide?

  • @IVCMusic

to add: unless they are capable of designing humans themselves in a lab, via artificial womb. Which would "reproduce". How can we understand this now? Yes someone feels like to be gay, but nobody asks us if we wanna be this or that in our lives. So what is the right choice when "designing" a human? Would someone design it gay, or rather straight?

I think you get carried away by his titles and the paraphernalia that the media gives this guy. But I don't think you really agree with all of their premises like these: “If an act doesn't make anyone feel bad, there can be nothing wrong with it” Pg. 253. Speaking about infidelity, “If something you did, could harm another, nothing happens if your heart tells you that nothing happens, because you acted according to what you wanted” “Humanism has taught us that something can be bad only if it makes someone feel bad. If an extramarital affair provides an outlet for emotional and sexual desires that are not satisfied by your spouse, why not enjoy it? Pg. 312- Today when scholars ask why a man wields a knife and stabs someone to death, answering, because he decided to do so, no longer serves. Instead, geneticists and neuroscientists provide a more detailed answer: It does so because of such electrochemical processes taking place in the brain that were shaped by a particular genetic constitution, which in turn reveals ancient evolutionary pressures coupled with random switching. "Scientists were discovering that in Sapiens there is no soul, neither free will nor the Self, only genes, hormones and neurons." Yuval proposes that people do not have freedom of will or decision, when a person "decides to kill another, it is not his fault, it is simply the result of a chain reaction of biochemical events, of random subatomic accidents, none of the options leaves margin for free will, this only exists in the imaginary stories that we men have invented” Apart from this, he is a person who believes that in fact we can reach immortality, despite being a scientist he has no idea that the very concept of "divinity" or being like "gods" has implications that a human cannot achieve. So I think he uses fantastic words to captivate (Deceive) his readers... a God by definition is: eternal (without beginning or end, not subject to time), all-powerful, all-knowing, has creative power exnihilo (without require raw material to create), can be everywhere at once and knows everything. Obviously, man cannot reach this state even if he could reach some of these with the help of technology, so using technology already depends on it, for which we would be "dependent gods". No I know, but I can't even grow my tomatoes in the garden if I don't depend on the laws of nature. You are praising a man who has a doctorate in science, but his books are full of dogmatic statements that cannot be refuted (why? Because he is considered an authority?) Please don't be naive guys. This man talks about a super computerized future without even mentioning the risks that this may entail. TODAY we live in the information age and some small technology companies threaten our security, privacy and do what they please with our data... what makes you think that in the future these developers will be benevolent to you? In addition to this, this man is endorsed by figures such as: Bill gates, Klaus Schwab, Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg... this does not sound alarm in your minds? If this is something normal for you, I have no choice but to feel sorry for you... you are already willing victims.

Thank You God, for Your begotten Son, Yeshua Ha Massiach (Jesus The Messiah). Who is He? " For unto us a Child is born. Unto us a Son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. " Isaiah 9 : 6 Acts Chapter 4 verse 12: " There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved." Born of a virgin, Mary. Matthew Chapter 1 verse 20: " behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Joseph), in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that (Christ)which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Christ, is God's word made flesh. Jesus is Jehovah God's (The Creator's) Word made into flesh. 1 John chapter 5 verse 7: " For there are three that bear a record in heaven, The Father, The Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one." John chapter 1 verse 1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John chapter 1 verse 14: " And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." John chapter 1 verse 10: " He was in the world, and the world knew Him not." Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12: " For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." How beautiful and awesome is God's Word, who is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, magnificent in all His glory, is He.Amen! John's Vision Of Christ Seated On His Throne In Heaven: Revelation chapter 4 verse 2 to 3: " Immediately, I (John), was in the Spirit, and behold a throne sat in Heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance, and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald." Why did Christ Jesus came and sacrificed His precious life for sinners like us? Christ (God's Word made into flesh), came because through flesh (Adam's flesh) sin entered the world, and then because of sin death entered the whole earth. Through flesh(Jesus Christ's flesh), the earth will be saved, sin is destroyed, and the curse of death shall be broken, death and the grave shall be cast into hell. Christ, who is God's Word made into flesh, sacrificed His life for us. He was crucified for our sins and transgressions. Christ died, and on the third day He resurrected in the flesh, conquering death and the grave. Now, Christ is seated in Heaven, at the right hand of Power(God). Through Christ's sacrifice we gain Salvation through God's abundant mercy and grace. We are reconciled and recompensed back to God, through the shed blood of His beloved Son Christ Jesus. John chapter 3 verse 16: " For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life." Romans chapter 5 verse 8: " But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Christ came to undo the sin and eternal death brought upon the world through the sin of Adam. Death in Adam, Life In Christ: Romans chapter 5 verse 19: " For as by one man's disobedience(Adam), many were made sinners, so also by one Man's (Jesus)obedience, many will be made righteous." Romans chapter 5 verse 18: " Therefore, as through one man's (Adam's) offense judgement came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even through one Man's (Christ's) righteous act, the free gift came to all men, resulting in the justification of life." Romans chapter 5 verse 17: " For if by the one man's offense(Adam's offense), death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in the life through the One(Jesus Christ). Romans chapter 5 verse 12: " Therefore, just as through one man (Adam)sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned." Romans chapter 5 verse 21: " "So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Do you now see that through Adam, sin and death entered the world, so that is why Christ Jesus came to give life, and give it more abundantly? Yes Christ came to give eternal life through Salvation. Adam's flesh brought sin, death, destruction, and condemnation. 1 Corinthians 15 : 21-22, "For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ, all shall be made alive." Christ's sacrifice, the crucifixtion of His flesh, brings reconciliation of sins, life, resurrection, eternal life, salvation Christ is coming back again, not as a sacrificial lamb. He is coming back as a roaring, waring lion, to destroy sin, death, and the grave once and for all. Amen! Halleluyah! Revelation chapter 22 verse 12 to 13: " And behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. " Now do you see friends, Why Christ Jesus is so so Important for our Salvation? Yes. Now, do you understand why there is only one way to God, and that is only through Christ Jesus, only? Yes. Christ is Salvation. Christ is our Lord and Saviour. Christ is the only way to God. Christ is the only Mediator between God and men(us humans). God loves us so much, He does not want anyone to perish in hell. God wants all sinners to be saved. That is why He sent His Word to save the world. God's Word became flesh, and dwelt among us to save us. Will you accept Christ and be saved? Romans chapter 6 verse 23: " For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." John Chapter 3 verse 16: " For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." Salvation is free! Christ already paid the price, all you have to do is recieve salvation through acceptance of Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Massiach. So who is Christ? He is The Word Of God. He is the Son of God. He is God. He is the image of the unseen God. He is the Alpha and Omega. He is the beginning and the end. He is the Great I Am. He is Emmanuel. He is The Christ. He is The Messiah. He is The Creator. He is our Lord and Saviour. He is our Mediator. He is the Lion and the Lamb. He is Salvation. He is the way, the truth, and life. Amen! I love you Lord! God created the heavens and the earth with His spoken Word. Did you know that Jesus is that Word, through which all things were created? Yes. John chapter 14 verse 6: " Jesus said to him," I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Colassians chapter 1 verse 15 to 16: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him." John chapter 1 verse 1 to 4: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." I hope that you know Christ, and understand Christ better now,to the glory of God. Amen! Christ is for all who will receive Him. Please pray this prayer with me. Lord Jesus, thank You for dying for me. Please come into my heart. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. You are the Son of God. You are the Word of God. You are God. You are The Great I Am, the One who Was, who Is, and who Is To Come. I believe that You sacrificed Your life for me and died, and on the third day, You awoke, and raised up Your body in the flesh. I believe You are coming back in the flesh (in Your resurrected body). I believe Salvation is only through You. Forgive me Lord of my sins. I renounce and repent of all my sins, past and present, this day. I will sin no more, with Your help dear Lord, now and forever more. Please Lord: keep me in Your bossom. Heal me Oh Lord, help me. Be near me, and never let me go. Write my name in Your Book of Life. Prepare a place for me in Your Father's House. Please hear my prayer dear God, in Jesus mighty name, I pray. Amen! May the Lord continue to be with you and strengthen you through any difficult journeys ahead. ***This is how our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, said we should pray.Matthew chapter 6 verse 9 to 13: "Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen." *** Now that you understand who Christ is, share Christ with others. Amen! Repent of your sins. Sin No More! Be baptized in Jesus Name. Submit to Jehovah-God. Love God with all your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit. Keep God's Commandments. Love one another. Forgive one another. It is written, "resist the devil, submit to God, and the devil will flee from you." Hate sin with all your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit. Spread the Gospel. Acts 11 vs. 15 to 16, " And as I began to speak, The Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, "John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

I donno about this guy... Human evolution and history is really really complicated and basically we're only being taught 1% in school. There's some very updated info that points to humans having lived far longer than we think, and ancient civilizations went much farther back than the Egyptians. The ancients were much more developed that we are now, before they were wiped out by cataclysmic events.

Well let's not start sucking each other's dicks just yet. Though I certainly agree that Yuval has very keen powers of observation, this is by no means something that "regular" people are not capable of. All it takes is for you to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself those uncomfortable questions. Have the courage to admit your true motivations and the real reasons for your feelings. A good start is to learn to look at yourself as if you were another person, see how you'd judge you then, notice the differences in judgment, and take it from there. Try to understand why the appraisal of your behavior and motives is different, and why it is so. It's really not that difficult. But, be ready to find you're defective in some ways. That you're immoral, selfish, possessive, etc... accept critique, but with compassion.
