Interview with Sean Beavan: Nine Inch Nails & Marilyn Manson - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

Sean Beavan is a musician, record producer, and audio engineer who is best known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Gunns N’ Roses, God Lives Underwater, and Slayer. He is revered for his work in industrial and metal. His creative pursuit of perfection is matched only by his charming studio manner that pushes artists to the best performances of their careers. It is this unique combination of qualities and talents that attract artists from outside the world of metal, such as No Doubt, Churchill, and more.
Beavan first fell in love with music by simply hearing it on the radio. He became fascinated with it and how it was put together. He began looking into the producers and the people who worked behind-the-scenes on the songs he loved hearing on the radio so much and decided that was what he wanted to do too. The hardest part, he says, was figuring out how to get there.
Beavan began his music career in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, playing bass and singing for various local bands. He also played fretless bass with Eric Carmen (of Raspberries) on the song “Hungry Eyes” on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. While working as an engineer at The Right Track Studio in Cleveland, Beavan met Trent Reznor, who was also working in the studio at the time. Reznor heard Beavan working on music for his own band, and asked if Beavan would be interested in mixing for Nine Inch Nails because what he was working on sounded so great. It was Reznor who began to connect him to some great names in the industry.

Downward Spiral, Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals are three of the most influential albums of my entire life. Sean you are the glue to my childhood. I had no idea how Awesome you are. Also the later Manson albums you had a hand in are brilliant too. You are a mastermind.
Finally!!! Manson and Nine inch nails albums are sonically really interesting, even if you don't like their music. They almost used the studio as an instrument.

I've never clicked on a video as fast!!! This dude is a total one off, his taste and ears have inspired me so much over the years, this channel is starting to make me feel the same about music again as i felt when i was 15 , its a weird magical thing thats hard to explain with words (Music) top man Warren, thank you ))
The great thing about your interviews, Warren, is that they're so natural. You go through a person's history and background, getting a snapshot of their past works and how it led to where they are today. That's the stuff I like to hear. And then by staying natural, that history branches off in many directions and you just talk together about everything. It gets to be natural while still mining as much good information/conversation as if it were rehearsed or something. It satisfies everyone that way. I hope you know how rare your interview style is! Thank you!
YES!!! I wanted you to interview Sean. This is the best music production channel ever! Right now i'm recording my album #9 and Warren has helped me to learn and overcome fears and insecurities with his lessons. Much love my friend ;)

Thanks Warren for another great interview! I would love to know how Sean recorded Axl Roses´s vocals. I mean for example in the song "This I Love" Axl goes from a fairly quiet part into screaming so how do you deal with that kind of performance?
@seanbeavan2884
4 жыл бұрын
Deep Clouds Axl is such a dynamic singer in emotional delivery but his voice is very pro, very controlled, the switch between his baritone and high screams doesn’t jump more than 6db so it was pretty easy to control with a good compressor (LA2A), into a comp or limiter (1176 or or UA 176) The Neve 1073 preamp wouldn’t really blow over too bad while coming up with the parts. Most times we would record verses separately with one pre amp gain setting and then we recorded screamy parts with their own setting.
