Interview with Rashida Jones on Her Porn Documentary 'Hot Girls Wanted'

Ойын-сауық

Except her point was not against a woman's self-determination over her own sexualization, she was clearly against the exploitation of these young women in the porn industry. Onlyfans is probably the best advancement in terms of giving women options on how to express their own bodies without being under the guise of some big production company. Now if you want to talk about how turning to sex work in the first place speaks on our current labor and economic system, then that's a conversation for another day.

Rashida Jones' brilliance: "Why do our bodies have to be our currency?" In other words, how sad is it when a culture places more economic value on a woman's body/face than her abilities? Sadly; this is rooted in the fact that a woman's physical self has historically been the currency with which she barters a life, the currency and calling card that opens every door and opportunity. She is on point to ask, "why does it have to be this way?", and help young women visualize a world and a future for themselves that encourages & welcomes the expression and contribution of her complete, authentic and nuanced self - intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.

TheVidaddict and mrbrockpeters I disagree. This is such a diverse topic and a variety of individuals are influenced by it in several different ways. It is vital for her (or anyone for that matter) to be open to opposing angles of an argument in order to invite more constructive conversation. I am impressed with Rashida for exposing the matter for what it is and initiating a conversation. That is, essentially, the most important thing is providing the story and allowing others to come to their own conclusion.

You guys are straying from the point and instead, turning to irrelevant criticism. The main point: After watching the film, would you be interested in getting involved with porn? Would you recommend a friend or family member get involved? Rashida spent her time and money to get the information out there. If she spoke definitively about the topic and said I believe porn is bad, don't do it, how many people do you think would consider listening? Not everyone. Education is the only way to empower individuals to make the decision for themselves, not just because a celebrity said so. And yes, she may contradict herself because this topic is complex. Porn could be a positive thing if it is handled with taste and freedom of choice. To me, Rashida wants to prevent a young girl finding herself in this vulnerable position.

"We've lost track of the difference between sexuality and sexualisation" Too true, there are so many instances of people labelling sexualisation as "sex positivity" and it's infuriating. We don't get that not all the men/women WANT or LIKE doing the sexual acts that they are doing in film. Too often we don't connect the porn industry with darker things like human trafficking because it's a "taboo" thing to hear, it makes us uncomfortable. But it's a real industry that's connected to pornography and it's growing at an alarming rate. We may not like to admit it because it doesn't sound nice or "seems unlikely to happen in a first world country" but it does (Canada, US, Australia etc.). The fact that the industry (human sex trafficking) is growing rampantly means that its demand is growing at an alarming rate, it's hard to say that new generations of kids having an unrestricted access to porn (and the vast supply of unregulated content) has nothing to do with that.

sexualisation is literally one and the same with sexuality. Your brain literally projects sexual fetish and desires upon others unconsciously especially during the act of sex. Self-sexualisation which is what she seems to be referring to, is simply an act of opposition in projecting your self-confidence and knowledge in your own sexuality and quirks that make you sexually appealing through your own ego upon others.

TL;DR. What qualifies as the "many negative aspects" is subjective, and it's unlikely she and you would perfectly align, as it's unlikely any two people easily align on this subject. It is not a "polar" subject it is a "fractured" subject where every individuals opinions on the many facets of the issue are a minority, there is no majority, and its part of the reason the topic is taboo, and even among academics who focus on social justice it's entirely undefined. She kept it limited, not because of "hate" but because of the practical limitations of making a point the majority of "any" demographic or audience could get. Long Version: Honestly, she's assuming a flat approach because the important issues should be raised one at a time to avoid the quagmire of all the different values people have. I mean I'm gonna guess the one guy who responded to your post has entirely different values then you, and read your comment in a way that you didn't intend. Some people directly moralize the idea of having sex for money, both men and women, some feminists are sex positive, some feminists are not, viewing all sexualization as the objectification of women. You're acting like the "hate" is some sort of political polarity, when really the hate would come from all sides of the aisle, all sorts of people, and by its very nature misalign not only with the majority of people on all angles and political beliefs, but inevitably defy the entire purpose of her activism on this topic by derailing it down unrelated topics of moral quandaries, feminism, political activism, ideologies, and more. She said EXACTLY what she needed to say, and kept it incredibly succinct because people are idiots everywhere, and you don't want to enter a discussion where ALL perspectives are a minority perspective with the overwhelming majority disagreeing with you, because it's not polar, but fractured.

@@dragoonsunite I absolutely agree, this was probably the most rational comment I’ve read on KZread in awhile. Often individuals have different views and opinions than each other, I’m sure she is happy with what she was able to say. However when watching the video I got the impression that she had more to say. Mainly because she kept referencing the hate she had already received. I didn’t say the hate was politically based but implied that it was more based on the idea that deviating from socially constructed norms creates backlash. I wish people could speak their mind fully without having to constantly worry about being “canceled” by the popular media or general society. I wish people would listen to each other’s opinions without having to attack those opinions. Same goes for supporters of the porn industry, while I do not agree there are many benefits to the industry I am willing to listen to both sides. I think I was hoping people would be more open minded overall.

+heshm9 I think you guys are missing the point. The show (that she made) and this video is not about "woah, porn is bad a nd disgusting", it's about okay, there is porn, and it's a thing that is a part of our lives, but should we take it as easy as we do? Should 11 year olds watch porn and grow up thinking 5 men coming onto a face of a woman is normal human sexuality? Should 18 year olds make decisions based on "Oh, i like fucking, I like money, why not get payed for it", without someone reminding them that the job, although NOT morally bad, or demeaning, is very very psychologically tolling, and btw, also quite dangerous. Rashinda is not saying, that wow, we should totally ban porn, she is saying, that 18 year olds who think they are going to make easy money, while having a good time and fabulous lifestyle should be better informed, and helped. The empowering part is not about glorifying prostitution, it's about how we women can have casual sex, and just sex in general, like men, and talk about sex, and our own sexuality, like men, without it being treated like the plauge, and the women who do, like prostitues. THAT is empowering, because it's point is that it's not dependant on men. It's about understanding that beauty, and self worth doesn't have to be dependant on the approval of men. That's why women like Nicky Minaj are importan, wether you like their music or not, because she represents a bodytype (that also "happens" to be the bodytype of often black women) that is not the same bodytype that is shouted at us from all over the media that we are supposed to have, and because she refuses to be a sexual object, and treats many men, in her music at least, like men treat women. RIhanna, also, owns her own body, and her showing it, and being sexual, is not About men, but about her own sexuality. The problem comes in when this is noticed by not adult women who (are supposed to) understand this, but at young girls, who only get from this that showing your boobs is cool and badass, which is not the point and a misinterpretation of the whole thing. The whole...problem, both the porn part, both the mainstream media part is a problem, not in itself. Porn is not bad and disgusting, and Rihanna or Nicky twerking and wearing nipple hats or whatever, is not bad, it's just something that needs to be thought through. We need to have a discussion about what kids actually get from this, and how it influences them, and their (future) sexualities.

If prostitutes are objects only for "mens pleasure" (women hire them too -_-). Howard Ackerman It's bad for young males too, I've met many younger guys of this generation who view women strictly as sexual objects and possessions. You should hear the way they talk and how desensitized they've become to empathy for women. Yet women seem to go for these guys more. It causes girls to get pregnant earlier and most are unfit for parenting and end up as single moms raising delinquents as children. Which leads to a dumber society as a whole eventually.

I guess I am stuck in the age where the pendulum is going to swing fully hard to the opposite side of morality, and I will be dead before it gets back to the middle. Watching porn is addictive. Masturbation is addictive. It sucks because these trigger the release of many very pleasing chemicals into the body, and who doesn't want that? Everyone wants to mainstream everything that brings them pleasure. I am really surprised that prostitution is still illegal, because everything that we glamorize seems to enforce the idea that being a slut is acceptable.

That was surprisingly insightfull. I half expected a "porn bad, needs to be removed" kind of presentation, but it wasn't that. It was a well backlit, well researched, compact analysis of the good and evil of this industry. As with any media industry, it seems to suffer from the same problem. It draws in lots of people who want to work in it, few actually become famous and get recognition to "make it", while the majority has to work for low pay under terrible circumstances. The only difference here being is that thier work in this industry has much, much longer lifetimes then any other branch. Porn stays on the internet forever. It might be taken down from the major sites, but if it hit the nerve of a certain community or fetish, it will stay on the less visited places for a long time. The endgame then becomes the sharing between those that downloaded the media and share it directly with others peer to peer or similarly.

dude are you like a simp or just ignorant? there are TONS of people male and female who literally get off to abusing others or being abused. entire communities are dedicated to this. These people don't want to be "saved" and they aren't doing it because they don't see another option. an overwhelming majority do it because it is their own sexual fantasy and that is no one elses business

  • @RomanNardone

I think the bigger issue is sex education in schools. Today we learn more about our bodies and the opposing genders' from tv, movies, and of course, porn. I don't have a problem with sex. Censoring never really seems to cause productive conversations. The problem I find is that these popular mediums give a fraction of real information about sex and ourselves, or perhaps even less because of the skewed way it portrays that information. We need to be informing future generations with an accurate and helpful curriculum. America especially tries to promote abstinence rather than giving actual advice that these young adults need to know. We must be realistic: teen pregnancies will happen, girls and boys alike will try to be sex symbols, and without proper guidance what is taught in sexual education and what's on tv holds just as much weight. If we want to change our culture we need to first change the way we educate our youth.

I can't imagine how utterly draining must be for influencers, music industry and social media personalities, and ultimately porn actresses to keep up under the constant pressure of releasing increasingly more and more shocking material in order to thrive under today's, ever-more disensitized, attention market. It would be impossible for this to go on indefinitely; many will shatter under the excruciating pain of modern fame. In that case I can imagine a setting on which qualities like modesty and elegancy will be trendy again, but this time not imposed by an oppresive male-dominated society, but praised and looked up by the scarcity remnants of virtues such as temperance and self-control in our society. Or, as the song goes: _There you go, can't make a wife out a ho_
