His accent and manner of speaking is interesting. He speaks Portuguese with an American accent, but with a Spanish cadence. A really playful mixture of influences which makes him sound kind of like he's speaking Italian lol! He sounds like he'd be fun to have a conversation with, though. His Portuguese was really clear.

How is that possible, when he doesn't even speak English with an American accent? He was born in Sweden to Czech-German parents, grew up in Canada, spent years hitch-hiking around Europe and then about ten years in Japan... If you want to hear Portuguese with an American accent, check out Tim Explica, Chris Gringo or Dave from Caipira Gringo.

I generally have an issue telling the difference between the average (non Quebec) Canadian accent and American. Pertaining to where he was born, I had no idea that that was his story, so I learnt something today.

@@hiranom20 he's such an inspiration. One of the true polyglots out there - many on YT are fakes trying to make a quick buck. And what a colourful life he has led! Canadian accents are difficult to discern. Many sound similiar to some American accents.

No, he doesn't have an American Accent. Actually he barely has any foreign accent at all. His accent is practically equal to a native Brazilian. The only thing that gives him away is the fact he mixes Spanish vocabulary while speaking Portuguese, almost no grammar mistake at all (from the point of view of a day-to-day language usage, not academic usage) If he were to focus more on his Portuguese, he would quickly fix these minor issues and not even a native would be able to tell he is a foreigner.

I don’t agree. Languages don’t have to be only about communicating and delivering the message. It entirely depends on your own priorities. For me when somebody just focuses on communicating and understanding others and not working on their pronunciation is wearing a bad quality t-shirt. They can wear it and be protected from the sun but it doesn’t look nice and is uncomfortable. I’d rather choose a t-shirt with a nice pattern = work on communicating, understanding others and having very good pronunciation. If you don’t work on your pronunciation early on you create bad habits and it’s harder to correct your mistakes later. Making the same mistakes many times in language learning is not good. That’s how I see it :)

When I study languages, I try to learn the pronunciation as a high priority. My reasoning is that when you learn with the right accent/pronunciation, the words crystalize better in your head because there's a closer association with what you hear from native speakers and what is symbolized in memory. In effect, having an accent when you speak is similar to developing a new dialect. The disconnect between how you hear it when you speak and how it's pronounced normally will create a barrier to further learning it. When I set upon a language, I painstakingly record myself and play it back and try to get an accent as close as possible to the native.

@@MaximillianCallender It doesn't matter which priorities you have, you need to first learn how to communicate in the language, after you acquired basic proficiency, you can then focus on your pronunciation. Is just like learning how to walk before you start running.

Yes, it is important when it comes down to pronunciation, because in certain languages it changes the sentences as you are communicating.

I love how at the beginning he said 'pensava' but then changed to 'achava' and also he said 'no ha pasado' and then corrected himself 'não tenho pasado'. Really drives home his later confession about how he's mainly thinking in portunhol! This has been a fun watch!

Mr. Kauffman is absolutely a genius 💯👍🏻🤗. His language learning methods are useful, outstanding and wonderful. In my case, I'm fairly used to the English language, I can speak it well with no pressure and I'd love to express myself in English even better as I'd like it to be. I'm not fluent yet, though. Furthermore, I'd like to speak Portuguese because it's a pretty easy language to learn for Spanish or Italian speakers. I can speak it a little bit, though. On the other hand, I love learning English everyday on my own, and the other languages a little bit at least. I think that learning languages is a challenge, a game, a beautiful passion for me because anyone can learn any language if they're willing to put in the effort. I'd love to learn French because it's a beautiful language as well, although its pronunciation might be tricky on a certain level. Besides, I'd love to learn Italian, German, Turkish, Dutch, Russian and Ukrainian. All the languages I mentioned are my target languages so far. By the way, I think the Indo-European languages are the best options to getting involved and immersing yourself into the fascinating world of languages. Almost all the languages I want to work in are Indo-European with the exception of Turkish. I also think that Asian languages are quite complicated, confusing and boring to learn, unless I change my mind but I highly doubt that will happen. Finally, I'll need more suggestions, entertaining methods and good feedback on my language learning journey because I never think of giving up and there are no excuses to learn anything, whatever I like. Lastly, I'll keep going non-stop for any goal I have in mind. 🧡

Hi! I'm french (and half spanish btw). I leanred a bit of brazilian potuguese as well and it's interesting to hear steve 's portuguse. It sounds very "english-spanish" speaking but i really really like his way of soing it. It's far from perfect BUT you can easily understand everything he says and to me that's EVERYTHING! just do it, practice, we are not expected to be perfect whatsoever

Normal.Português,espanhol e italiano são línguas muito similares.Já aprendi espanhol e agora começando a estudar italiano.Sempre mistura as 3 línguas porque também muitas palavras do italiano são iguais ao português e espanhol na escrita e alguma até na pronúncia.

7:57 até nativos cometem erros, especialmente quando estamos a maior parte do tempo com nossa mente inserida em outro idioma, a gente começa a misturar vocabulário, construções gramaticais e expressões linguísticas. Aqui a Virginia diz "fazer erros", provavelmente um pensamento falho advindo do inglês "make mistakes" que literalmente se traduz como "fazer erros", mas a expressão correta em PT-BR é "cometer erros" Vira e mexe eu misturo vocabulário, gramática e expressões dos idiomas que estudo dentro do Português.

I´m from Paraguay, a country that borders Brazil, meaning all people born here also acquires Portuguese through cartoons and the news. Not all Paraguayans speak Portuguese though, only those who were born in the city that borders the country. Funny fact: you would assume Brazilians living in the same region would speak Spanish, but that´s not the case. Only Paraguayans make the effort to speak Portuguese to communicate with Brazilians. No hard feelings.

Eu também acho que o sotaque nao è muito importante quando voce està aprendendo uma lingua! Ambos portugues e espanhol tem muitas coisas em comum com a minha lingua (italiano) especialmente o portugues brasileiro (apesar da distancia geogràfica), tem vocais abertas, entao acho mais natural falar assim! Gostei deste video!

Impressionante como ele mesmo se corrige emendando a palavra certa logo após deixar escapar um termo em espanhol ("muy... muito", "aunque... ainda") ou no gênero errado ("país pequena... pequeno"). Ele tb tem bastante domínio do sotaque, não perceptível em boa tarte das frases.

To a certain degree, It does matter which Portuguese you feel comfortable learning... Pronunciation plays a big part on learning languages. The Brazilian version is more opened as they speak, but the pronunciation to a lot of words can be a nightmare. You need a lot of patience and dedication to understand certain words and phrases. Portugal Portuguese is more closed spoken when they speak, but the pronunciation is the same as you would read words on paper.

Sério? Talvez dependa do país? Que eu saiba, em espanhol, esses verbos são diferentes. Foi isso que ele quis dizer. Lembrar (PT) = recordar / acordarse (ES) Esquecer (PT) = olvidar (ES) Achar (PT) = creer (ES)

Ahh this is also my problem. I speak Portuguese almost fluently and then I learn two months later that the word I was using doesn’t work in Portuguese.

Português é muito fácil porque quem fala espanhol ou italiano aprende muito fácil. Agora pergunta pra ele se ele já aprendeu árabe. Eu faço aulas de árabe e é difícil demais a pronúncia com o sotaque.

Qual o país de origem dele ?

Em que momento falou português o Steve🤔fiquei perdido com o pt do Steve

Ele fala muito bem! Especialmente se você considerar que ele fala 20 línguas e nunca passou muito tempo no Brasil ou Portugal.

Sei que foi provavelmente nervosismo, mas temos que atentar para não oferecermos “um beijo“ a estranhos porque isso pode ser bem mal interpretado. Experiência própria! 😂😉🤭

No...200 milhões só no Brasil!!!...sempre vejo esse ranço de brasileiros que criticam o sotaque de estrangeiros em espanhol, por favor né!? Eles não obrigação nenhuma...nativos somos nós...vamos evoluir essa mentalidade mesquinha... quem critica são aqueles que nem um portunhol falam porque quem domina um outro idioma sabe que o sotaque é uma preocupação desnecessária.

Amei este video, Eu tambien mixturo o espanhol e o português, mas eu voy melhorando cada dia e é confortabel olhar alguem que tambem os mixtura e é pode ter um bom bate papo

Ele quase não tem sotaque. A coisa que mais entrega ele é justamente a mistura de vocabulário espanhol dentro do Português, mas o sotaque está longe de entregá-lo.

Agent = agente, a gente = we.
