Olly, your Portuguese is fabulous. I was expecting fluency from watching the other video (the one on your channel), and even so your pronunciation, your vocabulary, the consistency and just the overall "naturalness" of your speech completely blew me away. We have a famous saying in Brazil: "Portuguese isn't really a language, it's a secret code", but it looks like you've cracked it. Kudos, truly.

Having someone as advanced as Olly still have to stop and think about how to say something not in his first language made me feel better about my own fumbling when trying to formulate sentences in Portuguese. So thank you for that.

He speaks so well ! Most polygots learn Spanish really well and learn a few Portuguese rules and say they speak Portuguese when it's very Portunhol-y. I don't sense any Spanish in his Portuguese, parabéns !

I did catch some Spanish in his Portuguese. He said “general” instead of “geral” and “acostumbrado” instead of “acostumado”. But his Portuguese is really good for someone who doesn’t practice the language on a daily basis..

Eu sempre digo aos estrangeiros, nunca aprenda português através do espanhol ou vice versa, pois não são exatamente a mesma coisa como eles imaginam.

I recommend Olly's book for advanced beginners. I read it a few months ago. The stories were a little goofy, but fun. The Portuguese was mostly easy to understand and many of the words I didn't know were translated. It was very encouraging.

The goofier the better, that's how I learned I can't say "passar um rato na praia" 😂😂, that phrase literally means "to spend some time at the beach" in Spanish but makes no sense in Portuguese.

i am going to brazil in oct. 2022 because my son is getting married to a beautiful brazilian girl. i got the short stories book for christmas and i am loving it!

Eu agora usou Italki pra praticar meu português, eu sempre falo com a mesma tutora e ela fala quê me português melhora cada dia quê marcamos aula. Entendi a maioria da conversa de vocês sem ler a legenda em inglês como sou falante nativo do inglês. Mas sim eu lei a legenda português porque me ajuda.

Je veux ajouter un commentaire à ta présentation de la méthode d'Olly sur la lecture d'histoires. Ça me rappelle exactement la façon naturelle par laquelle les enfants apprennent si vite à parler leur langue naturelle avec leurs parents et les autres enfants qu'ils rencontrent. La grammaire et le dictionnaire arrivent bien après qu'ils savent déjà parler couramment leur propre langue, parce qu'ils l'ont apprise directement, dans le contexte, et avec la masse, la matière même des choses que la langue impliquait au moment de leur propre expérience. Excellente méthode, j'en suis convaincu !

I bought his book in March of last year, just before the lockdowns started occurring in the U.S. I only got through the first chapter at the time, but I remember his re-reading technique and how it helped me to focus on the story and to work on figuring out the meaning from context where possible. I need to find the book and continue reading it!

O sotaque dele é maravilhoso. Aparece quasi que ele é brasileiro. Pra um estrangeiro, excelente!

You know, I find interviews with non-natives one of the best forms of comprehensive input for me. The native speaks slower and more simple for the non-native to understand and the non-native also speaks at a comfortable pace. Hearing two natives I get lost so fast. I would love if you made more content like this! I loved you vlogs too as I can just watch and pick up words I find it very useful. Algum brasileiro conhece um canal interessante onde falam devagar?

Eu gosto muito deste vídeo! Encontrei os vídeos de Olly só ontem à noite, e já amo as lições da professora Virginia desde alguns anos. Entendi quase tudo, com ajuda dos subtitulos portuguêses, e por o que eu sei dos sotaques (por falando com os meus amigos brasileiros e por assistindo os vídeos da professora Virginia), acho que Olly fala muito bem. (Meus amigos vieram para os EUA de São Paulo.) Uma outra coisa: eu aprendi espanhol antes de estudar português, e quando comecei a falar português com os meus amigos brasileiros, eles disseram que eu falava com sotaque espanhol. Felizmente, aprendi a diferença muito rapidamente depois disso, em grande parte pelos vídeos da professora Virginia.

Gostei dessa dica para aprender novos idiomas!

Boa noite Virginia , I have to switch to English for this one. I like this method of reading in a different language. I tried that method with Spanish and if you read something over and over you can use context clues to help learn the words and the meaning of the text. Ótimo vídeo

Concordo com o Richard. Quando ler em idiomas estrangeiros, leio até o fim embora tenha palavras que não entendo. Se consultar ao dicionário, perderei a cadência de ler. Então comecei a estudar português para conhecer a música brasileira como o Richard. Obrigado.

I’m blown away by your linguistic skills. A lot of foreigners have this false perception that there aren’t any Brits or Americans who can speak multiple languages fluently and idiomatically. You’re living proof that there are, haha. Amazing. It would be interesting to hear you speak fluent Greek. Learn to speak it and then record yourself speaking to Cypriots in north London, hahaha. Man, they’d be so jealous.

Caramba, eu também escrevo short stories em inglês para aprender este idioma. Já tenho três histórias totalmente finalizadas e revisadas. Também tenho algumas esquematizadas. A minha intensão é escrever 10 histórias e depois disponibiliza-las no Amazon em um único livro. A leitura e a escrita nos proporciona um intenso contato com idiomas, o que é tudo que precisamos! Para quem não vive no país da língua isso supre essa falta muito bem! Também quero escrever outro livro bem prático relatando como me tornei poliglota e dar dicas práticas de ensino do inglês! Eu uso livros de níveis, então não tem tantas palavras desconhecidas e, por isso, sim, busco todas as palavras no dicionário, mas se ela não for tão importante eu não volto nela. Caso eu a julgue como importante, escrevo ela no final do livro para depois treinar o uso dela em frases. Depois que o nível dos livros está bem fácil eu vou para outro nível. Atualmente, estou lendo livros nível C1. Esse vídeo poderia ter 30 minutos que não ficaria enjoado!

Learning a foreign language is very discouraging in general. The reason is it's because you really don't realize how good you are actually getting.

Olá! There is no simple answer to your question. It depends on a lot of things. For instance, what other languages do you speak? How many hours a week do you study? What methods do you use? All that will influence the results. I've seen students become conversational in 6 months, and I've seen students struggle to have a simple conversation after years of study. If you take your studies seriously and study for at least 30 minutes a day, you could reach an intermediate level and have the ability to have simple conversations in Portuguese after 6-12 months. To become really fluent in Portuguese, it will take much longer than that. Something between 2-4 years if you study regularly and practice a lot. I hope that helps.

I was a missionary in Brazil 1967 to 1969. I found that reading comics like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse were very useful because most of the words were in conversation. There was a saying that a person cannot speak Portuguese until they have made 10, 000 mistakes so they might as well start making the mistakes. Thankyou for your excellent podcast

Oi professora! Eu aprendo português da mesma maneira. Aqui está um exemplo: PORTAS Com grande admiração de todos na escadaria, a senhora Fonseca do quarto andar decidiu pintar a porta da frente do seu apartamento de um castanho agradável, como estavam pintadas as portas de todos os vizinhos, em vermelho-fogo. Na quinta-feira a sua intenção foi executado a efeito por um dos senhores Braga da empresa de pintura Braga & Filho. Só um olhar para a porta vermelha-fogo era razão suficiente para suposições fantásticas de todos os residentes sobre a razão deste ato incomum. Como a nossa senhora era conhecida pela sua natureza complicada, ninguém se atreveu a perguntar sobre este caso interessante. E por trás de tudo estava a propensão do senhor Fonseca para um bom tinto e forte vinho alentejano, que, às vezes, tinha uma grave influência sobre o seu julgamento e comportamento. Por conseguinte o infeliz admirador de vinho encontrava-se algumas vezes à frente da porta da jovem viúva Peres do terceiro andar em vez da sua, o que não era uma coisa de admiração, porque todas as portas na escadaria eram iguais. O carioca sempre usou muita gíria, mesmo no passado, e é geral, não é apenas uma classe social, todo carioca entende a seguinte frase: "mó caô aí", fico imaginando alguém vindo de outro país ouvindo isso haha

Não
