    Queridos amigos, nuevamente soy yo.

    Interesting ride. You can notice how much of a rollercoaster the Texas freeways are, they go up and down constantly. Are the sightlines as bad in reality? I've read that the recent I-35W crash in Fort Worth was partially caused due to poor sightlines, traffic couldn't see the pileup ahead due to the freeway going up and down over cross roads.

    It really is a rollercoaster. I'm sure that I-45 is one of the older roads in Texas, but there are sections of other interstates (I-10 in El Paso comes to mind) that have pretty terrible vertical geometry. It always makes me laugh when Americans brag about interstate standards. The interstates are fantastic no doubt, but there are some pretty low standard roads that have been grandfathered into the system.

    West of Katy used to have those overhead ramps that you pull up on on the right side of the freeway. They took them down due to a hurricane.

    Great video! Did you know? In 2016, Japan introduced the route number for expressway called "2016 Proposal for Realization of Expressway Numbering". They haven't have this since 1963 when they first build the first expressway until now. Here's the format: - Enn where the nn is a route number and this is a non-circular route. An example would be E1 which is Tomei Expressway. - Cnn where the nn is a route number and this is a circular route. An example would be C4 which is Ken-O Expressway and it is a partial ring road around Tokyo and it is also signed National Route 468. -And EnnA where the nn is a route number and A for parallel route. An example would be E1A which is Shin-Tomei Expressway and it parallels to Tomei Expressway (E1). They can have more than one same route number. For example, Hachinohe Expressway and Aomori Expressway which is E4A and parallels to Tohoku Expressway (E4). Indonesia also introduced the route number for toll road in 2019 and they haven't have this since 1978 when they build the first toll road until now.

    Your driving videos are of such quality that they make me homesick for Houston (which I probably would have grown to love if my parents were not so obsessed about my safety at the helm of a motor vehicle). I would mind all the curves a lot less if there was not so much of the up-and-down every time IH-45 came to a cross street. Is there not a vehicle by which I can inquire about why the Texas Transportation Department felt the need to lift the highway above the secondary streets? I know that there has to be a grade separation for obvious safety reasons; still, why can it not be the secondary street routed either under or over the highway?!?

  • @AsphaltPlanet1

    @AsphaltPlanet1

    Thanks for the comment. It can be difficult to build things below grade in Houston because of concerns about flooding. Most of the newer sections of I-45 cross arterial roads with much gentler geometry than we see in the section south of Downtown. I-45 is a fairly old freeway south of Downtown. Older roads tend to have less forgiving geometry because highway designers of the day simply didn't understand highway design as well as we do now, as we had less long term experience with road design.

    Ah, another video of I-45. The North Freeway is indeed one of the most impressive freeways in the city, too. I had no idea why at 2:50 vans were hogging the lanes. Surprisingly, they wasn't in the far left lane. The I-610 and I-45 interchange is definitely indeed archaic to where the downtown project will fix the whole interchange like head to toe. But yea, thanks for giving us the videos from the Woodlands all the way to the North Loop. The concrete pavement on I-45 feels and sounds relaxing too. Congrats for giving us one of the worst freeways in town.

    I wouldn't say that I-45 is necessarily the worst freeway in Houston, especially outside of Beltway 8 (or on the north side, north of SH-249). The portions inside BW-8 do need some upgrades, however. But compared to freeways around the entire USA, I would say that even the "archaic" portions of I-45 are pretty good (except for perhaps the Pierce Elevated). Considering that Houston's freeways with barrier-separated reversible HOV lanes date from the 1980s and 1990s, I think they were pretty advanced for that era. Some construction even along those segments do predate the construction of the HOV lanes, however (such as the I-45 at I-610 interchange).

    @@BrandonClaridge Good point but what's really the problem is that I-45 at US-59 is probably more worse than I-610 at US-59.

    Interstate 45 is a state only Interstate and have it's number divisible by 5 and most main Interstate highways with their numbers divisible by 5 are coast to coast and border to border routes, except I-30 (route between Texas and Arkansas), I-45 (state only route in Texas), and I-85 (regional route of the South Atlantic states).

    However, there's a twist about the expansion of I-69. It was separated into 10 segments and I wish it's complete and fully operational and it will look like a border to border Interstate highway between the Mexican state of Tamaulipas connecting I-69W, I-69C and I,69E near the Rio Grande, and the Canadian province of Ontario connecting I-94 to the 402 near St. Clair River. Even though the number isn't divisible by 5.

    @@AsphaltPlanet1 Typically DFW has its first freeze on average around mid-November. While below 0C is less-than-average temperature-wise even for mid-November, it is definitely not unexpected given when this usually occurs. The growing season tends to last from March to November. Interestingly this March, so far, has been quite warm, despite the deep freeze that we had about a month ago. I believe it got down to about -18C (0F) at my location one morning in mid-February, and that kind of cold is highly unusual around here. I actually went outdoors when it was around -18C, and to be honest, it did not feel that bad at all with the proper clothing (there was hardly any wind, and although I was wearing a coat and gloves, I actually did not have a hat on).
