After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews in all kinds of magazines and online zines, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn. I have been designing in some form since I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, and have never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published some articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post for a few years, I have always come back to designing. It is my first love and remains so to this day.

As you have said many times, we must learn to ignore the critics but inner and out in the world. I quilt and have them called blankets and want me to make one for their "someone" for $200. I used to make stained glass and people would come up to it and bang on it saying "Is that plastic?". Full coverage cross stitch and they say.... well you get the picture. I love and am inspired by your work and videos. Thank you.

I can’t even imagine someone thinking what you create is easy. Beauty in my mind comes from within and through interaction and understanding of what has been done and then thinking of what can be done based on that perspective and resources. I love learning about your thought process. Thanks again Ariane! Sandy

Enjoying your videos and with the stray green chenille near the end how you made it work. I I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that. Knotting with the head of the needle at the end I do often. Others could'nt understand how I did it even by showing them. I hate to waste any of my thread. Many have said I'm a 'tight a**" withthe thread and that's fine. please forgive my old mouth. Again love your videos, wish i had seen them sooner. Sew much talent in this world This video is like a thread scrap buster for me! Thank You!!

Love your thought process and results Ariane. I'm working on other projects now but trying to work on ideas re: where I want to begin a piece and with what colours as my linen is plain buff coloured. I've added to my collection of textiles to applique - just received 2 pieces of bark and 2 sari scrap bags from SF as I've scrim etc. already. Plus 10 hanks of Textile Selection which I'm winding separately onto a new packet of bobbins as I'll find it easier in the long run (and enjoyable to do while I watch TV!). They're gorgeous as I ordered more random ones than my perle and others so far. I'll admit I've generally couched chenille threads in the past and also boucle ones as they drive me berserk otherwise!!

I really enjoyed this video. I have done freeform crochet...I agree, to others it looks easy, but it is not. I would love to see a video on how to begin a piece. Slow stitching is something I have started and find so relaxing and enjoyable. Started by watching Anne Brooke Textile Artist and being a part of her 52 week tag challenge.

No it is not easy! I often start out with a plan of sorts and then it veers off in some direction other than what I wanted and I am seldom satisfied with the result. This happens in all of my arts and crafts from painting to needle work to card making. I love that section on your piece that is greenish brown with the colourful seed stitches in it. It looks like a bit of a map. It's near the top I think. Love that!

I can't really use that chenille because I do things like cushions and it just doesn't stand up to any wear at all. Looking forward to a project some day where I can use it.

When I'm having trouble with something I'm working on, I put it up on my design wall. The wall is in a spot I walk by daily and see from the corner of my eye, it will stay up there til I have a spark. I've also found that if what I've done isn't grabbing me, it usually means I haven't done enough yet.
