As an an interpreter I hate it when they call me a translator.. one time a doctor kept calling me a translator and I kept correcting him and he goes “ same thing!” And I went “ no it’s not… I don’t call you a nurse do I?” And he finally got it .

@@twinborn3850 interpreting is live between two parties who trying to communicate from one language to another… translating is taking a piece of frozen content ( written words, recordings, videos) and translating them from one language to another. Translators can take their time use resources like dictionaries, thesaurus, etc. Interpreter use the knowledge they have and must do it on the spot. Yes, the skill sets over lap but they are not the same.

I applied to be a Translator, and now I am being worked as an Interpreter - suffice to say, I am struggling.

I am really interested in getting into interpreting or translating German as a career. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I would have to get much better at my German but I am very interested in this field of work. (I already have a Bachelor's degree in Communication).

where I worked they always ask us to use the first person too.Never 3rd person.Sometimes that is easy, however some others not.

I don't know why a big deal is made about this supposed interpreting/translating dichotomy. I don't mind if I'm called a translator. Whatever. There are SO many other things that we should be concerned about in our profession. I am a court certified interpreter, and the government code in California also certifies me for Medical and Administrative Law. The fact of the matter is in order to be an effective interpreter, one MUST start off as a translator. One MUST be both in order to stay competent, there's no other way. Just one minute example of many: any proper course in Sight Translation (a skill set that takes months to develop, and that every certified interpreter should absolutely master) involves actual TRANSLATION classwork, homework and tests. Both the law and the medical/healthcare systems are basically structures made up of WRITTEN language, texts that define, denote, explain, illustrate, educate, etc.....that inform and supplement whatever will be said in any SPOKEN language. Conversational or not, if a would-be interpreter (in any field, because competence ALWAYS matters) does not understand how to handle the two written languages that he/she/they purport to know, then said individual has no business being an interpreter.
