I used to work for a I H dealership. In the early days you could get a 4cyl diesel with or without a turbo. Also, on the fender it didn’t say 4x4. It said All Wheel Drive. That’s because they came with locking differentials front and rear. Later you could get a 345 or special order 392 v8. They offered them in pickup style with a 3 or 4’ bed I think. Hard top or rag top. The 4cyl non turbo ones took about 5 miles just to get to 45 mph.

In Detroit I had a 67 V8 Scout with a snow plow that was pretty rusted. I found a Ziebarted (rust protected) right hand drive Postal scout in pretty good shape so we cut them across the floorboards and swapped bodies. The funny part was when I swapped steering boxes and found out the steering was reversed, oops.

(It posted my comment before I was done) . . . my whole life, but I never heard of these Scouts. So I did some research: Even though they have more room inside, they were modified production vehicles, as opposed to the purpose-built Jeep DJ-2. Jeep could guarantee the DJ in the numbers that the Postal Service required, while I-H had to consider consumer versions of the Scout as well. I have to disagree about one point made in the video: to me, "patina" is just another word for "neglect" after it gets to a certain point, a point that this Scout probably attained right around the Bicentennial. It would be a much better representation of what would have been seen delivering the mail if it were to be restored to its past glory. The Postal Service tries to maintain appearances, and a rusty, neglected trucklet like this does just the opposite. I know, "they're only original once", but this Scout certainly doesn't look original (i.e. as it left the factory) to me. I can understand a few thin spots in otherwise original paint, but when that paint is almost entirely missing, it's time to do something about it. You never see a current L.L.V. looking like a derelict refugee from a junkyard. OK, that was too harsh, and my apologies to the owner, but I wanted to make a point. Of course he is free to maintain (or not) his vehicle as he sees fit, and my opinion on the subject shouldn't carry any weight at all. But as a long-time Postal Worker, I like to see the Service presented in a more favorable light.
