INTERESTED IN STARTING A SCRAP/RECYCLING BUSINESS? HERE ARE SOME TIPS!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello KZread! If your reading this you must already have the scrapping bug! The majority of questions I get are how do you get so much scrap/computer e-waste? To sum it all up I started out doing research. I've always been interested in recycling way before KZread was even around. I love business. I always have. So I decided to take a hobby like recycling metals and turn it into a small part time business. Little did I know that it would expand so fast. So fast I couldn't keep up. I learned that organization is the key to everything and you don't have to make top dollar. Just get in your "free" scrap and flip it fast. You want to always have room for the next load. If you have the room set up shelving in your garage like I have for example. Buy bins to separate everything. Everything you buy is tax deductible and always use the profits from your business to buy the tools you need. The best advice I can give you is to start off slow. Start by asking Family and Friends for their unwanted scrap items. Everyone in America and a basement or garage full of unwanted "junk!" Get your name out there. Word of mouth spreads fast. As you grow start going to businesses. Tell them you will take all their unwanted computers, shelving, file cabinets etc that they have in storage for free! If you do a good job they will tell other businesses. People that work at the businesses will start giving you things. In time you may have 1,000 people who know who you are. With all this being said it's possible to get TOO big! You will run out of time and space. You need to find “your” comfortable niche and don’t grow beyond that. I've found my happy medium. I get in just enough to make a nice profit with out being swamped. You will learn as you go. With all this being said check out the video now. It may help answer some of your questions. Remember, for the most part all the scrappers you see on KZread are genuine and we are all part of the scrapping family. You can ask any of us questions and we will be here to help you grow. I hope you find all of this info helpful. Good Luck to you. Please Like & Subscribe to my Channel. There are tons of videos to come in the future. Take Care & God Bless!

    I do scraping as a hobby.... One of my recent scores the other day was off CraigList... I was looking at the free section and saw some office chairs that I was considering picking one up for my work area.. In one of the pictures was several Desktop computers stacked in the corner... So I wrote and asked for them and only one exit away from my house .. I got 20 nice towers and 3 that had been partially cannibalized ones.. Just have to ask...

    I have thought about it but it's mainly the cost of medical insurance that keeps me at a regular job. For now at least? Thanks so much for the kind comment. Take Care.

    I love your videos- learning a lot. Can you speak to discharging the CRV of computer motherboards? I come across those enough to want to start scrapping them. Our town does not take these so I am not sure what to do. May drive 30 miles once I get enough to one that does. I scrapped a tv the other day but them read about the electical current stored in CRV's and decided not to mess with those or microwaves. Thank you.

    I don't mess with those anymore. Mike the scrapper has a video on discharging microwaves. I don't mess with them anymore. I've taking a lot of chances and wouldn't recommend messing with them. Take Care.

    Got a Q for ya. When posting something on ebay (like a car amp, home stereo stuff, other electronics) Have a rule of thumb when to stop listing and scrap it out? I know its a broad question akin to "How long is a piece of string?" I guess looking more for strategy/philosophy then hard numbers.

    Actually its a great question and easy to answer. What I do if look up the item I want to sell on eBay before I list it. Go to the "complete" listings tab and see what the item sold for, or if it even sold! If it didn't sell I don't list it. If it is too heavy and costs $80 bucks to ship, I won't list it. If I'm only going to make a few dollars and wait 2 months to sell it, I don't list it. I don't keep inventory per say. I buy and sell. I flip items. Most of the time flipping scrap is the easiest/fastest way to sell. I always want room for the next load. Hope this helps. Take Care.

    Hello. No, I don't do this for a living. It's just a side business. I couldn't make it full time because of the expense of my house payment and medical insurance. If medical wasn't so high and my house was paid off I could probably swing it. Take Care.

    It's getting harder here too. The environmentalists here are making it hard to even scrap anymore. There are a lot of laws. Also the scrap market is down a lot since I started. I sell mainly now on eBay. Take Care.

    Hello. Thanks for your kind comment. I sell almost everything that is scrap to recycle yards in my area. Copper, Brass and Aluminum prices are up pretty good right now. If your interested in making extra money you may want to consider starting your own recycling business. Finding things to sell is not hard. Word of mouth is your best friend when your starting out. Friends, Family and neighbors all have things they want to get rid of and you can get all the stuff for free. Call around to recycling places in your area and see what they buy. Some yards will have price lists online. Some scrappers here on KZread use the site BordSort. They buy almost anything and they have prices listed on their site. The only drawback to using them is that you have to pay for the shipping. eBay is a great source too where buyers pay the shipping but they have fees. You have to experiment and see what makes you the best money. I just use local means to sell now. I hope this helps. Take Care.

    Do you sell circuit boards on ebay? How do you sell power adapters?

  • @Scrapping4aDart

    @Scrapping4aDart

    I used to sell the boards on eBay but now my yard buys it all. Everything has different prices. The only thing they will not buy in my area are low grade boards (from old vcr's, crt monitors etc...). Check with your yard. Also if you don't have a local market go to the website called "the scrap metal forum." They have buyers from all around the U.S. who buy and sell. I sell the adaptors at my scrap yard. Take Care.

    What do you do with all the plastic waste?

  • @Scrapping4aDart

    @Scrapping4aDart

    Hello. If it is a printer or smaller appliance I just sell it to the yard as an appliance rate. That way they buy the plastic. Sometimes I just have to throw out the plastic as there is no buyer for just plastic. Take Care.
