Interested in Portugal's D7 Visa? Here's Everything You Need to Know

Interested in moving to Portugal? If you’ve started looking into becoming an expat in Portugal you have probably heard of the D7 visa. The D7 visa is the most popular way for non-EU residents to move to Portugal and settle long-term in this beautiful country. In this video, we explain the steps involved in getting yourself a D7 visa to live in Portugal.
Getting the D7 is a complicated process! If you want help, reach out to StartAbroad. We specialize in relocating Americans and Canadians to Portugal. We offer a Visa Application Service for the D7 visa and the Portuguese digital nomad visa.
What you will need to include in your D7 application packet:
- The application for a national visa
- A passport valid for at least 6 months after the expiration of your 120 day visa AND that contains at least 2 blank pages (front and back)
- 2 recent passport photos, size 35mmx45mm
- A notarized color copy of your main passport page
- If you are not a citizen where you are applying, proof of legal residency
- A personal statement declaring the reasons you are seeking residency and outlining your qualifications
- Proof of financial means to support yourself.
- Your NIF and Portuguese bank account
- A criminal record certificate.
- A release for a Portuguese criminal record check by the SEF
- Private health insurance coverage.
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal.
- If relevant, copies of marriage certificates and birth certificates
- For some consulates you will also need a reference letter from a contact in Portugal.
This application can be difficult to navigate! If you would like guidance or support on your application, StartAbroad offers a D7 Visa service, which you can learn more about here: www.startabroad.com/d7-d8-app...)

At approx 9:30 minutes--should be Atestado de Residência in Portuguese. What was said in the video sounded like some Spanish term. When I get frustrated with my Portuguese, I sometimes start speaking Spanish, too, and hope for the best.

Great content! Regarding income, can a lump sum of money in a bank account count as a source of passive income? Also, can you combine a pension plus a lump sum in the bank to fulfill the requirements of the D7 visa?

Hi @54ameneses, thank you for your question! You cannot use a lump sum of money in lieu of passive income. You will need to show that you qualify through sources like a pension, social security, or rental income. You can combine various current or future sources of passive income. Please schedule a free 15-minute consultation and we can give you recommendations on how you can qualify. You can book that here: startabroad.com/schedule-consultation/

Hello , what if someone has a property in Portugal while applying for D 7 Visa ? How can this help to get the D7 Visa ? For example in this case the person does not need a proof of a 12 month Lease in Portugal ? Because usually they can live on their land in a Caravan for example, ..and any other issues related to this ,please let us know . Thanks .

Hi there great video! I have a question. How long can you leave Portugal while on a D7 - outside of Schengan? Also if you stay within Schengan, how long can you leave Portugal while on a D7? Also curious as to why you would require healthcare insurance if on many sites it says that you would have access to healthcare while on D7? Thanks so much

@Paterson340 - I read online that to maintain residency status one must remain in Portugal a minimum of 183 days in a calendar year. Ensure your passport is stamped upon entry.

Is the newly issued birth certificate required if you are an individual - not married without children? Also, I heard that your D7 application might get rejected if you have not previously visited Portugal. Is that correct? Thank you so much for this detailed video. It's the most informative one I've seen.

If you live far from a Portuguese consulate why should you have to travel for the interview just to approve the four month D7 visa instead of a video interview? It makes no sense.

Looking to retire at 60 prior to drawing Social Security. Can you use a 401k account as passive income as you can draw from it at 59 1/2? Yes, this sounds complicated opening a bank account in Portugal, getting a lease, all before you get approved 😃 I also don't know anyone in Portugal to get a reference. I am looking at Portugal as I have friends in Spain and it seems like a good base to live and travel from.

Hello, I have a question. Are earnings from stock trading and Bitcoin transactions recognized as proof of income? In other words, if I can earn the equivalent of Portugal’s annual minimum wage through stock trading and have substantial savings, would that be considered? Or do I need to convert it into dividend income or similar to meet the bureaucratic requirement of a stable income? If D7 does not meet these conditions, is there a visa available for stock traders without a job in Europe? Thank you.
