I worked as a property crimes detective and assisted many homicide detectives in their investigations. I can only speak to being a detective at a "medium" sized agency in California first off. When I went "upstairs" and was given a desk it took a few days to settle in and then was sent to several schools for investigators. The schools were fun and you are taught many tools for investigation. It's not anything like TV shows. It's tedious, multi task driven and you MUST be efficient yet regimented. I usually ran a caseload of 20+ cases that I prioritized by severity and solvability. If there was a case that had "hot" leads or time sensitive elements to them, I did those tasks first. I learned quickly how to make my travels efficient. If I was taking a search warrant to a judge for a signature, I would take all other court related materials I had built up that needed to go to different prosecutors or offices within the court building and make my route able to contact witnesses in different cases, check for suspects at different locations and work on several cases at once. Closing cases that were unsolved due to no investigative leads was always tough. It always felt like I missed something and it irritated me. Anyway, I had a lot more action type fun on patrol, but being a detective and building a great case through evidence collection, interviews, interrogations and forensics was a different kind of fun.

I thought i was gonna be a ass kicking homicide detective like Harry Callahan shooting killers with 44. Magnums and doing investigations and solving them quickly, not doing paperwork.

The MOST fun part of being a detective was interrogation. Interrogation is scientific and an art I will argue. You must be able to get the suspect to relax and "disarm" her/him and make the interrogation conversational. Spend some time talking to them like you would some chatty person in public you don't know.

@@matttownsend4465 when it comes to your effectiveness at interrogating criminals and trying to get them to give you information that will help get them convicted, I can't really say where a criminology degree would specifically help. Criminology is the study of crime. You learn basic concepts of the criminal justice system, some criminal psychology and the profile of criminals and people with antisocial behavior. Interrogation is a very specific function of a peace officer. To be an excellent interrogator you must have training and also years of experience putting that training to use in real world interrogations. Just having a degree in criminology wouldn't be "most helpful" in my experience.

I know I’m the kind of person that when I put my mind to finding out the truth about something I’m very persistent until I feel satisfied I know the truth.

I've always wanted to be a detective, Columbo was my favourite. People thought he was stupid but that was his cover. Sad when he died....was loving Joe Kenya, Just love detective's that do their job thoughly. Shows they take pride in doing it properly for the families....No idea why others, police etc... don't do their best in the job. 2020 made so many turn against them.

Once in the middle of the night, my sister and I were trying to solve a cipher on the Science Of Deduction (Sherlock Holmes) website. It was difficult, and she decided to go to sleep. I, however, stayed up for 3 hours until I solved it.

Ok kid. I’m a child as well but I’m actually a teen. Your gonna want to keep thinking about it cause a lot of things you’ll see as one can be mentally unsettling. So before you decide to make that decision just think if you want to sacrifice your child life. Seeing things other people don’t see is usual for a lot of kids. Just cause you’ve done some small things with your family to help find out what happened, doesn’t mean your ready to see a homicide.

I’m not interested in being a patrol officer tho, but would being in the security forces in the military do the same as a normal officer would cause I’m seriously considering that due to the fact that my college can be easier to obtain

Have to work at least 3 years minimum as a patrol or beat cop before you can even be considered for a transfer and that is only if your city even has a homicide department at which point you would have to be recommended by your superior officer (likely your sergeant) making you eligible to take a test (varies depending on departments). Most Cops don't get in until they're in their mid to late 30's and that's the good ones.

Check with your local department. Some will take you if you have at least a bachelors in criminal justice. It’s faster and cheaper (not going to a university) to start off as a patrol officer.

I would recommend to do a bachelors or associates degree in criminology/criminal justice. When you finish that, you need to become a police officer for about 3-5 years so you'll most likely go to the police academy for that. After you're years as a police officer you get the opportunity to get promoted which you can choose to become a detective. Well, this is what I'm planning to do with the mix of research I found. (This is for America tho)

Having a degree like the other person said and going through the academy. Then patrol or something for a time. Then switching out eventually. There are many different route to go and depends on where your wanting to work.

@@amarimeere yes, sadly. I was thinking the same thing. Especially with the problems with the police in the US. But you need to climb up to ranks. So the bottom is police officer and then you can move to other areas of work. :)
