    Thanks for your video, and I give up the idea to buy Intel D435. I am doing indoor wall scanning, and the depth accuracy is the most important issue. Any suggestions for the camera? I am thinking about using BlasterX senz3d.

    In Kinetic, the depths are measured. While in RS, the depths are calculated. That makes the result different.

    Wow, massive difference between TOF and stereo. TOF wins hands-down indoors. It will be interesting to see how the Realsense Lidar camera L515 compares, maybe it will be as good as the TOF based tech.

    The Realsense is so inaccurate I don't see any application for it over the kinnect?

    @@artispeedy it works out door because it based on stereo vision and ir dot projector, but kinect v2 only based on laser. All 3D cameras which based on stereo vision work outdoors.

    for this thesis you will have to compare both cameras under all conditions. The realsense can deliver the images at a higher frame rate and more resolution. Remember: This is just a short comparison of one indoor scene.

    Khalil Ammour assalamu aleykum. I had personal experience with both cameras. Intel definitely has the higher framerate, FOV, and resolution but its point cloud is nowhere as precise as what Kinect offers. For my particular algorithm setup, Intel camera's data was simply too imprecise. The only reason i switched to the new camera was because of its other good features and also because kinect has to be powered by an outlet cable. If u are planning on getting intel camera, make very thorough research before doing so

    to view the point cloud of the Kinect v2 you can use the Kinect2.0 SDK on a Windows PC. For my Kinect v2 point cloud i wrote code that transfers the depth information to a Linux system running ROS. The Kinect v2 point cloud in this video is shown in RViz, a viewer for ROS messages.

    Hi, ConradF! I'm a developer/dentist and I'm planning to develop a tool where I can use a depth cam to get an accurate position of dental implants using scanbodies... Can you do me a huge favor??? I'd REAAAALLY appreciate if you could generate a point cloud of your mouth opened... I know it's an embarrassing thing to ask for, but it is my everyday life to look inside people mouths... Tks in advance!!!

    Adriano: the "focal distance" would not give you the detail you need. The sensor requires the subject to be at least 2ft away / 60cm, with very little detail for what you need

    The problem is not the camera, its the user. The real sense is still a developers tool, and its not plug and play. you can see how unstable the point cloud is. Yes the kinect is mature product, and you plug it in and just turn on with software. This video only proves that you are not skilled enough to perform a proper comparison.

    i really want to use the realsense! Please share your advanced knowledge how to set the parameters right. This was already the best i could get out of it with the supplied Real Sense Viewer...

    @@conradf4105 these are for developers. They have updates all the time. First thing I recommend is updating the device firmware with realsence tools. Second I would make sure you always download the SDK and build it from source. Also a PC with devoted USB 3.1 is important. Point One has way more bandwidth. Then you need to buy a cable that is USB C 10gb bandwidth. I found only one cable locally that could perform this, and cost double Price. Good luck.

    Do you have any prove that the mentioned changes would improve the quality of the data? I would like to know that before i start to invest time here. As for this video, i used the latest firmware at this time. Nevertheless i dont use usb 3.1. because the specification of intel tells me i should use USB 3.0 Type - C. Building from source could be an option tho

    Conrad he is correct we just started playing with dev products ourselves and it is nothing to sneeze at. I am well versed in mechanical engineering aspects of my business yet when it comes to c or c plus, python, or various other dev platforms your world becomes vastly difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Fortunately I have a business associate with a bachelors in coding among ten years of additional experience. You can learn on your own and most forums will accept and help you. Be humble and you will maybe even get someone to start the coding for you.

    Iam familiar with c++ and other programming languages because I got an M Sc in Computer Science :D. I still dont understand what beeing able to write code has to do with the performance of the real sense. The viewer that is provided with the realsense promisses to be able to change every parameter of the camera. We used it here. At the time this video was made (upload date), it was not possible for us to get Kinect v2 like data out of the camera. This is all the video is showing. Maybe i will upload a short comparison again with the latest firmware.
