    I know this is 5 years old but I really wanted to solve this. At first I really overcomplicated it trying to integrate tan^-1(x) THREE TIMES but then I figured it out. Int( x² arctan(x) ) dx ~ Integration by parts: D I + arctan(x) x² - 1/(x² + 1) ⅓x³ = ⅓x³ arctan(x) - ⅓ int( x³/(x² + 1) ) dx ~ u substitution: - ⅓ int( x³/(x² + 1) ) dx u = x² + 1 du = 2x dx dx = du/2x - ⅓ int( x³/u ) du/2x - ⅙ int( x²/u ) du x² = u - 1 - ⅙ int( (u - 1)/u ) du - ⅙ int( u/u - 1/u ) du - ⅙ int( 1 - 1/u ) du - ⅙( u - ln|u| ) Substitute back for x: - ⅙( x² + 1 - ln(x² + 1) ) //no need for absolute value since x² + 1 is always positive.// Solution: Int( x² arctan(x) ) dx = ⅓x³ arctan(x) + ⅙ln(x² + 1) - ⅙x² - ⅙ + C

True, but if your at the point in your mathematical schooling where your learning calculus 2, its expected that you know the basics of trig, algebra and geometry that you learn earlier. knowing tan^-1 = arctan is like knowing 1/x=x^-1.

I prefer to let x = tan w and then dx = (sec w)^2 dw and arctan (tan w) = w. So we now have the integral //(tan w)(w)( (sec w)^2) dw and proceed with integration by parts letting u = (w tan w) and dv = (sec w)^2 dw and v = tan w also du = (tan w + w (sec w)^2) dw. (Note that II use the notation “//“ to denote the integral sign to differentiate it from the single slash used for division.) Then remembering the formula for integration by parts ( //udv = uv - //vdu ) we have the integral equals w ( tan w) (tan w) - //tan w ( tan w + (sec w)^2 dw.

We use the LIATE method, or detail spelled backwards just without the D, in order to choose which ones to differentiate first and integrate second. The abbreviation stands for logs, inverse trig, algebraic, trig, and exponential. We choose arctan(x) since it was differentiated first and belongs in the D column since arctan(x) is an inverse trig function. x goes in the I column since it is an algebraic function,

arctan(x^2) is long method, which requires DI method and algebra method combines together. You can find the answer here through Wolfram Alpha, graphing calculator TI-89, SymboLab, or something called integral calculator website.

You misuse the parentheses here. If you meant the integral of 1/(x^2+1), the answer is arctan(x)+C. The other way is integral of 1/x^2+1 is -1/x+x+C.
