I do not offer this service to clients anymore but I wanted to share this method with you guys because:
1. The clients get to see results immediately, without having to wait months for their hair to loc.
2. I don't have to apply heat or make them sit under a dryer with clips.
3. Touch ups last longer.
4. I don't have to use any products. I personally feel like some products make your hair collect dust/lint or they might have harsh ingredients for your scalp. I only use natural oils if any dryness is visible on the scalp. My favorite scalp dressings are Jojoba oil from Shea Moisture and Sulfur 8 scalp moisturizer.
This is the second time I do this client’s hair after starting the instant locs. This video was filmed during his first root touch up. I unraveled one of his locs to demonstrate this technique since they haven’t fully locked yet.
The sectioning of your parts will be the base of the hairstyle. I included a diagram of the most commonly suggested ways to part the hair; brick or oval method. Whatever method you use, keep in mind that you should never align your locs vertically (no checkers board/grid pattern!) to avoid causing gaps in your scalp. It's better to do the locs small and then in time if you want them thicker, you can blend them together. If you make your locs too thick from the beginning, you will have a very hard time separating them. As a loc grows, it gets longer and heavier, make sure the base is a decent size to hold the weight of the growth.
Comment with any questions you might have so I can help you get started on your loc journey! I will add more steps as I see your comments. Enjoy the quick tutorial!
If you would like to try out this method, you can purchase these tools at www.strandaddict.com/shop.

I wish I knew how long as well. I have 3c hair and its like 5 inches long, I tried to start doing instalocks but the dread came out very small and I even used a pretty decent sized section for it too. When I tried to do the hair in the back the dread came out stupid tiny.
Excellent tutorial
The end had me DED.. but this shit fye
Also this method will Work. Over time his locs will still bud more and will probably be very thick and nice. It will work is the over all point if you want the instant look but they will still change and should thicken a bit more from the collecting of shredded hair over time.

Hi I like your video I’m a Puerto Rican man with curly hair I’ve had my hair in starter locs for six months but the lady is only palm twisting and the hair is looping flatting and knotted together with other dreads should I get someone that knows how to crochet dreads so that they will stay in because she does not want to do it with the crochet needle and I am finished with her she does not listen when I tell her not to put any type of spray or stuff in my hair she knows I’m allergic to it and she still does it I am finished with her what is your suggestion.
Where are you located? I would like to see if im close so I can setup an appointment. Also, great work and how much do you charge for a full head/how long? Thanks much

Yes, you can do the interlock in the roots of your current dreads. Pull each dread through its own root, several times, until its comfortably tight against your scalp. every time you pull it through, do it from a different direction.

As the hair grows, it will obviously be loose, so you will have to do what I did in this video, interlock it. That is what I'm doing with the second tool. You insert the dread through its own roor\t several times till it tightens up.

Since I'm mixed and have what they call "loose" or "soft" curls I decided to try something like this and paid someone to do this about 6 months ago and it I really hated the way it turned out. I believe she tried to palm roll my hair and maybe interlock the base? I'm not exactly sure but my question is, do you have to interlock the base once you're done using the crochet method? Or will it just fall apart without that?
@StrandAddict
6 жыл бұрын
With the crochet method, I can only crochet comfortably to about a 1/2 inch from the scalp. That short loose section is what I interlock, so If you don't interlock, it will stay lose but not unravel or fall apart. The crochet hook lets you create a knotted dread immediately and secures the whole section from becoming loose. You would have to do some serious brushing if you want to undo the crochet hook's job.

I stopped cuz it was taking time away from my braiding. I adore doing cornrows. I am happier creating vs doing a repetitive motion. You can see some of my braiding work in my other videos/playlists. I honestly don't know anyone around that area specializing in the service but don't be afraid to ask someone you see in the street with really nice dreads lol. Just complement them and tell them you need help lol.
Anyone can do this in the new york area??

@StrandAddict

SzerszeŃ Official you cant keep interlocking in the same direction. You always enter the hook at a different angle as the last time. Think of the base of the lock, as the face of a watch. I start by inserting my latch hook from 6 and I pull the lock in through 12 o'clock. Then I insert through 3 and pull in through 9 o'clock. And you keep rotating and pulling from different angles, clockwise, to avoid creating that gap in the middle of the dread.
