Installing the Wagon Kitchen Chuck Box | Engels Coach Shop

The chuck box kitchen on a roundup wagon was the center of life on the old west cattle drives. Meals were prepared, bedrolls were carried, supplies were transported, and personal hygiene necessities were centered around the chuck wagon. Most of these were built on the ranch and adapted to general grain hauling wagons, so a variety of personal tastes were displayed in their build. This chuck box was build by a cabinet maker, a friend of the owner of this wagon, so the finish and styling is of cabinet quality, unlike if this was built by local cow-hands. However it shows the reality of the lifestyle of the working cowboy, eating and sleeping on the trail.

Cowboys came from many walks of life and backgrounds. Not all were useless at crafting and woodwork. Some just enjoyed the solitude. I once studied this at great length years ago. And it was pretty surprising who became cowboys and why. I also lived the life for awhile and woodwork was one of my favorite hobbies, I still love it. If one enjoyed what he did, and had access to the tools, he could well have crafted a very nice chuck box.

Even though Danish is not spoken by so many, approximately 6 millions, worldwide, I know that many people in USA are of scandinavian descent and maybe still would read the 'old' language. But I am happy to realise that your videos come with Danish subtitles. Usually I do listen to what you, Dave, are saying just for training purposes.

I am in awe how easily the wheels turn, almost effortlessly! You created a thing of beauty yet utility. Excuse me, sir, but wagon building was an art, and dovetail and so on were pretty common. Everyone saw their work as such, and even plain things like my grandfathers' milking stools were crafted with care. As I was taught, metal wasn't common, being very expensive, till after the Civil War when coal became king.

Hey Dave, Chuck Box was surely built as a cabinet would have been. Knowing a little about how wood takes stain, and my OCD, I thought you better to sand the entire exterior to have the wood able to absorb the new stain and help with the uniform finish and not be so splotchy. It's difficult to give a uniform finish when a previous product has been applied. But you knew this and did the best you could without offending the builder of the box. Sort of like 2 craftsmen butting heads. Great Video, Thanks.

It saddens me that you find it necessary to explain your actions to the naysayers but I guess such is the culture we live in these days. I for one completely understand the concepts you've discussed frequently and it is easy to differentiate between a period correct finished product and something constructed entirely with period correct methods & tools. I've been a committed follower of your incredible craftsmanship since the 20 Mule Team build, have binge watched nearly all of your videos produced before that and I'm still constantly impressed by your knowledge, skills and dedication to the craft. As a German, I like to watch English videos to improve my language skills. Many Germans can speak English, French or even Russian. Russian was the second language in the former socialist East before 1990. But there are also many immigrants with German ancestors who have lived in Russia for a long time. There are also Ukrainian refugees here. In the West, on the other hand, there is a lot of contact with English, Americans and French. These are not the only languages spoken here, Europe is diverse.

Or access to a cabinet in an old farm house. Found items are just as good as something you can make. Some folks furnished their homes or made a meager living picking up items along wagon trains routes that the Easterners thought they needed to take to their new homes out west but realized along the way that they had better lighten the load before they hit those mountains, lol.

It doesn't sit there as long as one might think, lol. Its not going to rot. More often than not, the terrain would be such that 'cookie' would have to place a rock under it to get it level. Better chance of the plate rusting and rotting out the leg.

My uncle was a premier cabinet maker with several cabinets in hardware catalogs. He trained us nephews and other boys how to scrape finish and in the process taught us how to cut glass for scrapers. He made a set of cabinets for a lady who wanted the antique look. When they were finished and before he hauled them out to install, the lady came to look at them. She was unhappy because they did not look age beaten and marked. So he got his pocket knife out and started gouging the fronts where people would have gouged them over the years, carved wear on the corners, and the lady was very happy. So, what a person wants or would have been done years ago, and what a professional would do today is as you say, simply the difference between someone making a box then and a professional now is a little apart but both are done with pride of work. Back then the box was probably made by the same carpenter who made the pine box caskets.

Mrs. Engels, I have found Google Translate to be less than wonderful, sometimes, although it is highly convenient. For example, the translation to English of my French relatives' emails is bewildering. My teenagers put us on to some new software that is being used by everyone in the bi-lingual, bi-cultural group they are in at school. It seems a whole new generation better, although the free access on the web is limited to a certain quantity. It is called Deep L Translate. Easy to search up. All my best regards to you and your husband, I completely admire the operation, all the talent and arcane knowledge that goes into every aspect of the shop and video production. The product is fabulous! L

It's pretty common for cabinetmakers to use beeswax to lubricate the glides on those drawers, which can easily cause the spots you had to remove. What likely happened was that the beeswax dripped out when the box was in a hot truck and laid on it's face causing the spots on the face of the drawers, then the box was moved and laid on it's back, causing the drips along the side of the case.

Watching you coat it with oil finish it almost looks like the cabinet maker put a shellac wash coat on the whole box and then spot coated the knots with a heavier cut of shellac. This was common practice for cabinet makers at one time to keep/ limit the rosin from weeping out when pine was to be painted. It was occasionally used to 'line' food storage containers keep the oils from food from being absorbed and therefore the smell of rancid food to a minimum.... just a thought. Nice work as usual 👌

I like your style of the Chuck Box, really looks good and will serve you a lot longer than those boxes made way back then. We have really enjoyed your replication of the many purpose wagon with all the different uses and just a little more room that will do all the had work better than the original wagons. You did great Dave, thanks for the full length and condensed versions of videos. Stay safe and keep up the good work. I would be lost without the closed captioning, even with hearing aids I still misunderstand some.
